Minutes Page 1 Back Cover 6 7 8 9 10 11 Our Awards Banquet which wraps up the year for SDOC was held January 6 at Tanoan Country Club. The venue was lovely with a gorgeous view out over the golf course and really yummy food. After the dinner, the awards for titles were presented to all the owners who attended. If you weren t there, I believe they are available in the office at the Club. Special Awards for Good Sportsmanship, Most Hours Trained (the Helen Yarwood Trophy) and the Saul Rovinsky (formerly the Jim Murphy/Mike Kuliasha Award) were handed out. Trainers gifts were given out, and everyone had a great time. The trainers gifts this year were leashes and quite unique. Left to right: Kim Banales, Gene Tatum, Jeanne Gill. This year the Helen Yarwood Trophy for the most hours devoted to training at the Club went to Kim Banales, our Conformation trainer, who is constantly there working with her trainees both in class and one-on-one. She is absolutely devoted to turning out dogs that will earn Championships for our members. The Good Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Gene Tatum who is both the first and the last man standing at our agility trials. He is up at the Club loading equipment, down at the trial sites unloading and setting it up, and then repeating the process after the trial. He also helps set the courses, change the courses, and fills in with all kinds of assistance. You may not notice him much, but he s right there giving it his all. The Saul Rovinsky Trophy this year was presented to Jeanne Gill. This award is given to the person who has contributed the most to the Club behind the scenes and went the extra ten miles for the Club. The three award recipients from the previous three years have the honor of selecting each year s winner, and this year chose someone who has worked in a variety of areas. Several years ago she took the lead of our Rally program and was even the Co-chair for the Obedience/Rally Fun Match. Those who hang around to the final minutes of events will see her by your side taking down and loading up equipment. She is also active in other areas of club work and is always willing, able and pleasant. It is a delight to present her with this token of appreciation. This year, for the first time, the top five trainers in each division, Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking, are being recognized for their dedication to the Club. They were introduced at the Awards Banquet. From Tracking: Carolee Doublas, Bob Kipp, Gloria Napper-Owen, Laurel Shelton, and Lynn Wilson. From Obedience: Kim Banales, Jeanne Gill, Janice Anthes, Pam Jones, and Pam Sehmer. From Agility: Laura Echevarria, Gayl Elliott, Susan McGowan, Barbara Peterson, and Mica Tyler. Many many thanks to these dedicated trainers and also to the Training Directors. Without them our classes could not exist. A list of title winners is on page ten of this newsletter.

Dust and Dirt Be Gone By Peggy Chandler The building was cleaned the week between Christmas and New Year s. Boy, did it need it. Gone are the artistic dust pictures on the walls under the swamp coolers. Gone are the spots on the windows and blinds. Gone are the dust and dirt in the ducts and maybe, our allergies as well? SDOC has a wonderful cleaning person, Karla, who comes in daily, cleans up and mops the floors on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Like our houses, a deep cleaning is sometimes needed outside of the regular cleaning. This cleaning was 15 years in the making, I m told. Jeff Robb contacted three vendors and received quotes for the cleaning. The Board voted on ServPro; a reputable, large company who could work within our timeframe. The crew came in on Dec 27 and worked like the dickens getting done the afternoon of the 28 th. A HUGE Thank You to Sue Babcock, Terri Brown, Amy Montano and Phyllis Collier for coming in and opening up for the cleaners and locking up when done. We couldn t have done this without you. NOTICE Due to corporate contract problems, the National Obedience and National Rally trials will NOT be held at Purina Farms as originally planned. They will be held from June 29 to July 1 at the Eukanuba Hall (Roberts Centre) in Wilmington, Ohio. The Rally Trial will be held June 29 will the Obedience Trial will be held on June 30 to July 1. Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Hey Guys and Gals: I just lear ned fr om Facebook which I seldom look at, that two of our ver y active and supportive members were recently in the hospital. Now I feel like a Grinch because I didn t send flowers from the Club or even a card. Problem is, if I don t hear about it, I can t send anything from the Club. PLEASE, call me, write to me, email me, facebook me. I WANT to send something, but I need your help. I WANT TO KNOW when a member needs some support. That s what the Hearts and Flowers person does! I can t do my job if I don t hear from you. Thanks! Barb Mitchell The building will be closed on February 9, 2018 so that they can set up for the Novice Trials that will be held Feb. 10-11. If you regularly train on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, please arrange to do so on a different day that week. The premium is out for the March Agility trials. They will be held March 16, 17 and 18 at the Sheriff s Posse arena. Judges are Cynthia Blanton and Arlyn Sigeti. Trial Secretary is Lisa Frankland. Runs are limited to a total of 660 daily so be sure to get your entries in right away! Premiums available on our website Enchantment Training Club is holding two UKC Nosework trials in February. Feb. 3 is a one day trial offering all five scents and all five levels for a container and vehicle search only. Then on Feb. 17/18, a trial will be held for all odors, levels and elements. There will be two searches for containers, vehicles, interior, and exterior. For full information or a premium, contact Dee Falk at dee.falk@yahoo.com. SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS www.sdocnm.org Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. RUSH if you want to get into the February 4 TDX Tracking Trial, which SDOC is holding at the Placitas tracking area. The premium is available on our website: www.sdocnm.org/images/ Premiums/TDX2018premium.pdf Judges are Sharon Jolly and Thomas Hacholski. Training Directors for 2018 will be: Annie Newsted for Tracking; Deb Tabor for Obedience, and Gene Tatum and Pat Hesteer for Agility with Laura Echevarria taking over when they are gone for the summer. Sunday Rally Drills for the spring season will begin on January 21. They cost $10 for two runs at either the same level or at two different levels with the same dog or two dogs doing one run each. Walk thru for the top level will begin at 2:30 with actual runs beginning at 2:45. It will be followed by Novice at about 4 PM. If you are working Novice, be sure to be there by 3:55. Set up times for the different levels can be extensive, especially with the addition of the Master s Level. Until we get an idea of the number of participants on a regular basis, and the levels they want to run, we will alternate week by week the levels to be offered. One week will be Masters, Excellent and Novice and the next week will be Excellent, Advanced/Intermediate, and Novice. The number and levels being offered may change based on attendance so be sure to check the website for a complete list of levels and dates. A drill class may be canceled if there is a fun match in the area when you will be encouraged to attend that. We do not have space here to give the entire list of dates which currently goes through the end of May so be sure to check our website regularly! Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. Page 3

SDOC Board DOUBLE Meetings are held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership Instructor Recognition Happy New Year to you all. We hope your holidays were gratifying. As of today, there are only 2 working spots left for Monday s Master s Handling. Audits spots are unlimited and well worth your time. Gerry is a great teacher who provides the Auditor excellent information on handling their dog or help training others. For additional information email Laura Echeverria at lhe@comcast.net. Page 4

Hold The Dates By Peggy Chandler SDOC is pleased to announce a Gerry Brown seminar on March 30, 31 and April 1. The seminar will focus on using independent obstacle performance to help handlers handle the challenges of today's courses. Gerry is a wonderful instructor, a down-to-earth person, and is especially good at working with each team to maximize strengths. Gerry calls this seminar "send and RUN." This seminar is primarily a benefit for our instructors and members. Registration will open in January. Priority for working spots will go to SDOC instructors, members, then non-members. There will be 10 working spots and unlimited auditing spots in each session. Most seminars have at least 12 working spots -- we're excited that we're able to offer our working teams extra time and attention while keeping the cost of the seminar reasonable. Seminar Topics -- "Send and Run!" Friday Morning -- "Foundation skills for young dogs": Developing "send" skills in young dogs (dogs 6 months and older and those just beginning agility) Afternoon -- Developing "send" skills in young dogs and those new to agility Saturday "Send and Run": For dogs currently competing at Open or above and handlers who want to learn how having good "send" skills can improve their performance Sunday Masters Handling: For dogs competing at the Excellent/Masters level with strong independent obstacle performance and handlers who want learn to use that skill to succeed on challenging courses The seminar will be announced on the SDOC website, Facebook and yahoo site.
