Breeders and Breeding in the UK Over the past 5 years, 127 different breeders have registered puppies. 36 of these have no Kennel Club registered kennel name 57 people only bred one lider 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 Puppies 352 287 321 403 324 Liders 46 47 54 65 58 In the list of the 26 terrier breeds recognised by the Kennel Club, the Wheaten comes 12 th in number of puppies born per year.

Imports & exports over the past 5 years Wheatens imported from other countries Canada 1 Republic of Ireland 38 Germany 1 The Netherlands 2 Sweden 3 USA 1. Wheatens exported to other countries Australia 2 Canada 1 Czechoslovakia 1 Denmark 1 Norway 1 The Netherlands 2 Oman 1 New Zealand 3 USA 4

Breeding guidelines of the SCWT Club of GB General The owner of the stud dog and the owner of the bitch have equal responsibility to breed from Wheatens which conform to the Breed Standard and are of sound temperament and which are registered with The Kennel Club. No Wheaten should be bred from for which there is specialist veterinary evidence that it is affected by, or is carrying genencally, a serious inherited disease. Use should be made of the schemes devised to test both the sire and the dam for known serious health problems or hereditary defects. Brood Bitches: Bitches should be two years of age or have had her third season (whichever is earliest), Puppies born to a bitch a$er a bitch s eighth birthday cannot usually be registered with the Kennel Club A bitch should not have a first lider a$er her fi$h birthday without prior veterinary consultanon. Bitches may not have any more than six liders during their lifenmes, and ideally no more than four liders, nor should they be bred on consecunve seasons without a cernficate from a veterinary surgeon. Stud Dogs: A dog should not be used at stud if the dog itself, or the bitch brought to him, is in poor condinon. Stud services should be refused to any bitch not registered with the Kennel Club or whose progeny cannot be registered with the Kennel Club Note: In order to facilitate the keeping of full health records, we also ask that owners inform the Secretary of the death of their Wheaten at whatever age.

Wheaten health in the UK Renal dysplasia (PNP): Monitoring of puppies since 1984. Many pups snll blood tested for normal kidney funcnon before dispersal to new homes. Blood tesnng for normal kidney funcnon of both sire & dam recommended before breeding The problem was advised to be a recessive gene so producers of RD, their close relanves and progeny were withdrawn from breeding. Names of parents of proven carriers are printed annually in BulleNn and Yearbook With the cooperanon of breeders, very few cases seen in the last 10 years. Protein losing diseases: Names of Wheatens proven to have died of PLE/PLN and those of Wheatens considered by the experts to have sufficient veterinary evidence that they are suffering form PLE/PLN are published annually. Fewer than a dozen Wheatens confirmed to be affected to date, but there is concern these will increase. A research project at the Royal Veterinary College is trying to idennfy an early laboratory test for PLE. To confirm PLE at present requires a biopsy or endoscopy: both are invasive, require anaesthenc and are a$er symptoms have developed. > The panca (perinuclear ann neutrophilic cytoplasmic annbody) test uses a small blood sample. This is also being tested to determine the blood albumin level. A lower than normal albumin result indicates kidney problems > 189 Wheatens, aged from 2 upwards, have been tested. 39 were panca posinve.: however only one of these had a low albumin level. The project will connnue over the next 18 to 24 months on Wheatens from the original test, with both posinve and neganve panca results, whose owners have volunteered that their dogs to connnue to be tested. > If any of those Wheatens which had a posinve panca test develop signs of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or PLE, this may help to confirm a link between panca results and the later development of protein losing disease. If this research theory is proven to be correct, this will idennfy those Wheatens who could develop PLE two or more years before signs of the disease become evident. This would allow special diets, etc. to be used and hopefully delay the onset. It will be some Nme before this answer is known.

Health surveys by the SCWT Club of GB Our Club ran a general health survey over a three year period. Those owners who took part in the ininal survey were asked to fill in a second form a year later and then a third form a year a$er that. Results were received for over 400 Wheatens. The health forms are now with The Royal Veterinary College for analysis. As lidle is known about the ageing of the Wheaten, a follow up form was sent to those owners parncipanng in the third round of the above survey. This will be connnued over future years
