May 2012 Newsletter From Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue
In This Issue Puppy Time Spring has Sprung Upcoming Events 4 Paws Training Our Volunteer of the Month Passion Project Well spring has officially sprung with the Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue. We are busy with our volunteer efforts. The rescuing of more dogs, taking them to the vet for procedures, meeting with interested adopters, finding perfect forever homes, raising money (check out events this weekend below) and awareness! It is all in a days work! We have had some highlights this Spring. Our volunteer, Pat, was busy with a litter of pups for the last few months. Romeo and Juliet with Mom Irina Puppy Time Holly was found on a golf course and was rescued by the Coachella Shelter. They had a hard time catching her because she was fast and what they called "human aggressive". In stepped our dedicated volunteer Pat Markall who went to the shelter and just talked to Holly on several occasions. On the third trip, Pat put her had in the kennel and Holly came up and gave her a nice lick! SCGRR decided to pull her out of the shelter. All the way home she kissed Pat! Several days later Pat noticed that Holly looked like she had a puppy bump and lo and behold after a trip to the vet...we found out that she was late in pregnancy. SCGRR decided the best thing to do was to have the litter. Holly delivered nine beautiful babies three weeks after being rescued. Juneau (fka Shasta) loves his new home and brother Riley We were so busy in April that we forgot to remind everyone to get their photos in for the 2013 Calendar contest! Have no fear...we decided to
KoKo (nut) enjoying a treat at 5:00 in the morning! extend the deadline to June 5, 2012. Also, since several people have submitted beautiful photos that were taken by professional and/or amateur photographers, we have changed one of the rules. We are now accepting all photos, as long as the original photographer provides written permission to print their work. Espen with her new family Sanine, Ken and Ken's girls This month in our 4 Paws Training Center Betsy Calkins will talk to us about Clicker Training! Clicker training means using a sound (a click) to communicate with your dog. Clickers have been in use for more than forty years. The method is best known from the world of marine animal training where people need a way to communicate with animals like dolphins and orcas that can't be controlled physically. Buddy fka Cody with Robin and Norm How does it work? It is fabulously simple. First we teach the dog that the click means he has won a treat. Then we use the click to tell the dog when he has done something we like. Essentially: When your dog does what you want him to do...like sit or a down...you click
and give him a treat. This gives your dog instant, specific feedback. Wildwood Elementary asked their third grade class to create a Passion Project. Zoe and Claire (who both have rescue Goldens) went to work making key chains and charms to sell. They raised and donated $172.00 to SCGRR. Not only did they raise money, but also raised awareness at the same time. Our "Woofie" made an appearance to show his support! Thank you Wildwood Elementary, Zoe and Claire for helping educate our next generation of animal lovers!
