Reptiles Reptiles are one group of animals. There are two special features that make an animal a reptile. Those two features are bodies covered in scales and having a cold-blooded body. Adult reptiles lay eggs, then baby reptiles will hatch from these eggs. There are thousands of reptile species alive today. Reptiles can be found all over the world, except for the cold continent of Antarctica. They have a varied diet that consists of plants, insects, and other animals.

Alligators Alligators are a very large type of reptile. They live around water in areas of the United States and China. All alligators have a long and slender body, four short legs, a very long tail, and a head with very powerful jaws. They can grow up to 19 feet long. Alligators are very similar to crocodiles, but they have a shorter head than a crocodile. Both are very dangerous reptiles. They eat animals, such as fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals.

Crocodiles Crocodiles are an example of a reptile. They are very similar to an alligator, but crocodiles have a longer and pointier head than an alligator. These animals have long bodies with four short legs and a very long tail. Its jaws and teeth can eat can cause a lot of damage to another animal. Crocodiles are found in tropical areas in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia. It eats fish, birds, mammals, and other reptiles. They can even eat their prey while swimming underwater.

Turtles Turtles are a very popular type of reptile. There are many different types of turtles. Two ways to tell turtles apart is whether they live on land or in the sea. A turtle has a unique body, with four feet and a hard shell that covers most of its body. When in danger, turtles can hide their heads inside its shell. Turtles can be found in most parts of the world, in and out of water, except Antarctica. Sea turtles live in the ocean. Their diet depends on where they live, ranging from plants to insects to fish.

Tortoises Many people mistake a tortoise for a turtle, but there are several differences between them. A tortoise has a heavier shell that is more rounded than a turtle s. A tortoise is also mainly found on land in Africa and Asia, and some areas in America. They live longer than turtles, too. They can live from eighty to one hundred and fifty years! A tortoise eats mostly plants, but some tortoises do eat insects and worms.

Snakes Snakes are a very unique reptile. They do not have any hands or feet. They have just a long, narrow body with a head at one end and a tail at the other. There are many different types of snakes, such as rattlesnakes, cobras, and pythons. Some of these are even venomous. You can find snakes on all continents except Antarctica. They even live in the oceans, too! A snake s diet consists of bugs and other animals.

Iguanas Iguanas are lizards, which are large types of reptiles. Iguanas can be found in jungles around Central and South America, but lots of people keep iguanas as a pet. When they live in the wild, they tend to live in rainforests and dwell in trees. Iguanas are usually brown and green in color to help them blend in with their environment. They have a row of spines that run down their back. They like to eat plants, but sometimes will eat insects, too.

Chameleons Chameleons are an interesting reptile. They are a lizard that has unique color patterns. A chameleon can change the color of its skin to look like what the chameleon is standing near. This helps camouflage it from predators. They eat plants and insects. Chameleons are found in different areas of the world. They prefer forests. They are mostly found in Africa, but they can also be found in the Middle East, India, and Southern Europe. They are also kept as pets around the world.
