Tag Your Friend's Pets! Tag Your Family Member's Pets!

by Jennifer Pesnell We have all seen the posts on Facebook: Fluffy is missing. She just had a bath and she wasn t wearing her collar. Something about a bath that must make pets run for the hills. It is not hard to bathe your pet, dry them off and put their collar right back on, but I digress! Or Buddy is gone again. He has on a red collar, no tags. What good is a collar without an ID tag? My head hurts just from wading through all the lost pet postings online each day and I am sure yours does too. I hope that everyone reading this article has a collar and ID tag on their pet. If not, please go to your nearest pet store (or if you are a hermit like me, shop online) and buy a cute collar for your furry friend. Buy a couple extras to give out to friends or family members whose pets aren t properly identified. A collar is useless without ID. Most pet stores (Petco, PetSmart) have a machine onsite that will engrave ID tags for a nominal fee. PAWS of NE LA keeps our handy dandy ID tag machine at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter at 417 Well Rd in West Monroe and our tags are only $2 each. Just stop by the shelter during regular business hours and they will make you a tag. We make FREE pet tags during our monthly offsite adoptions at Petco. Our next offsite adoption is this Saturday (January 23rd) so come by Petco in Monroe between 1-4pm and we ll make your pet a FREE ID tag. If the jingling ID tags make you crazy, you still have options: tag silencers, engraved ID plates that screw onto the collar itself, collars with your pet s name and your phone number embroidered on it, and my current favorite, collars with the ID information etched on the buckle. Just google personalized pet collar and get your credit card ready!

Our pets depend on us to keep them safe and the FASTEST way to reunite a lost pet with his or her owner is a collar and ID tag. Microchips are great but the person who finds your pet has to care enough to load them up in the car and take them to a vet or shelter to be scanned. Please help spread the word about collars and ID tags. Check out your friends and family members pets. If they are not wearing proper identification, remind the owner of the importance and offer to help. Tell them about the free PAWS tag days. Encourage those around you to be responsible pet owners and the animals in our community will benefit! Kentucky Derby Themed Golf Tournament, May 6th Stay updated via our Facebook event page which will be coming soon! Click HERE for event info. PAWS Animal Shelter Rescue Program Thanks to our wonderful donors, sponsors and foster families, we are able to rescue many dogs from the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter each month. As of 12/31/15, we have saved the lives of 1,105 dogs and cats since our inception in 2003! Many of them have had to endure heartworm treatment, mange treatment, limb amputations or other surgeries due to neglect and injuries they received prior to entering the shelter. All of these awesome pets have gone on to loving new families with the help of our rescue partners! In December we were able to pull these 16 wonderful dogs from the shelter who have either already found new homes or will soon be on their way to new lives!

There are always many more waiting at the shelter who need our help. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful rescue effort, please consider donating to our Rescue Program or becoming a foster family. Click HERE to donate to our Animal Shelter Rescue Program Click HERE to access our foster home application. Read our foster home FAQ's HERE.

Please spay or neuter your pets! If you are a low-income pet owner and can't afford it, we can help! Click HERE for our spay/neuter application. Visit our website to learn more about the importance of spay/neuter. If you have questions, email us at pawsnela@yahoo.com. Welcome! We would like to thank and welcome our December 2015 new & renewing members! Not a member? Join us today! Click HERE to become a PAWS member...
