Akela Alice Leyton gets Dingo Love photo: Anna Kristensen Rescued Dingo Family by Leyton Jay Cougar Wild Spirit is now home to a family of four displaced dingoes who were part of a conserva on effort that did not go as planned. Kooyong and her mate Buckley were a breeding pair of pure dingoes who came from Dingo Discovery and Research Centre in Australia, which has been an official conserva on organiza on since 2007. Many people think that dingoes are descendants of domes c dogs who were brought to Australia several hundred years ago. The Centre says that this is not true. The pure dingo has always been a wild canine, which developed as the wolf of Australia. Fossil records show that dingoes have lived in Australia for at least 5000 years. Just like wolves, dingoes have one breeding season, and do not bark. They also have unique skeletal flexibility which allows them to bend in ways that are impossible for modern dogs. According to the Centre: Dingoes are currently considered threatened by the Interna onal Union for Conserva on of Nature, but it has been largely le up to sanctuaries such as ours to fight for the protec on and future of the dingo. There is no way that our sanctuary, or indeed any or all of the dingo breeding sanctuaries in Australia today combined can save the species. The Centre finds zoos, and sanctuaries out- Argo Azteca side of Australia, who are willing to care for a breeding pair of dingoes and their offspring to help ensure that the species survives. Occasionally, a breeding pair goes to a private home, like Kooyong and Buckley who went to live with a husband and wife in Florida. The couple was very excited about the opportunity to be a part of dingo conserva- on and educa on. They gave their dingoes great care, making sure they had plenty of love and a en on, plus a rich diet. Kooyong and Buckley had a li er of six pups who were also lovingly cared for. Unfortunately, life got sadly complicated for the humans. The husband took all the couples money and le the wife and their young son along with all the animals. Kooyong s female pup then became pregnant by either a li ermate or her father. Buckley and his male pups got into a severe fight, which resulted in Buckley being euthanized due to his severe injuries. With tremendous sadness, the woman made the difficult but necessary decision to find her dingoes new homes. She got great help from members of her community. Two of Kooyong s pups found a happy home at a zoo. Kooyong and the rest of her pups found a terrific foster home with Deneen and Sue in North Carolina, where Kooyong s daughter successfully gave birth to her li er. When I went to get Kooyong and her three boys, I got the mind-blowing bonus of holding those adorable newly born pups. Back at Wild Spirit, volunteers Ramon, Ed and Vince remodeled an exis ng habitat into a beau ful dingo play land, so we didn t spend any money for a new space. Our new dingo family arrived at their new home safely, a er ge ng healthy check-ups from our vet. They are all doing so well, get lots of love each day, and have already enjoyed their first enrichment treat, Bunny Baskets. We never breed rescues at WSWS, and so now, all our dingoes are fixed and no longer a part of the breeding por on of conserva on. for the rest of their lives, and we will be sure everyone who comes to visit learns all about these precious wild canines and the conserva on efforts we support. Our Iowa 10 Becomes Westerosi Wolves We couldn t be more thrilled to announce that world-famous, award-winning fantasy writer, George R R Mar n and his wife Parris, have named our Iowa 10 rescues! The Mar ns took me out of their seriously busy lives to personally name our ten wolf-dogs a er the five dire wolves and five main characters from Mr. Mar n s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Gypsy Jaeger photo: Carole Altendorf Junior Life-Saving Outreach by George Stapleton At a recent outreach event for WSWS, something happened that was one of the greatest moments in my life! Wild Spirit Board Member, Jan Ravenwolf, helped me set up an outreach event for us in Cedar Crest New Mexico when Jackie Davidson, represen ng Davis Hardware, proposed that we join their anniversary event featuring Animal Rescue groups. A er we got set up, a man named Joe came up to me and our wolf ambassador, Forest. Joe started to ask ques ons about how wolves impact human hun ng of ungulates (hoofed animals) in the U.S. I immediately thought; well this is going to be an interes ng conversa on, with a bad outcome or end in an argument. To my surprise, that is NOT what happened. Joe and I spoke about why he hunted and his ques ons revolved around how he chose to hunt. He did put trophies on his wall, but insisted that he only would hunt and kill what he could eat. As our conversa on progressed to the hun ng of predators, he did concede that most would not be edible but commented that predators needed to be hunted to maintain popula ons of ungulates for humans to hunt. I explained how an apex predator like the wolf has proven in Yellowstone that apex predators control ungulate popula ons far more effec- vely than humans can. Wolves keep popula ons in check by keeping the ungulates moving, and taking the weak and sick, as opposed to taking the biggest and best animals like humans do. He did agree that since the re-introduc on of wolves to Yellowstone there had been a defini ve posi ve influence on the flora and fauna. That was great but not as incredible as his statement to come. Joe then told me that he and a friend from California were considering a wolf hun ng trip up North and were looking at this upcoming season for their hunt. My heart sank into despair at just the thought of two more wild wolves being killed by hunters; but that was not the emo on that I was soon to feel. Joe looked me in the eyes and said that a er mee ng Forest, he could not and would not hunt wolves no ma er what the reason! I could not believe my ears. Forest had just saved, possibly two wild wolves by doing nothing more than being at that place at that me with that man! Furthermore, Joe said that he would cancel his plans for the hunt and was sure that his hun ng partner would do the same. And! Joe also said he would talk to hunters about his experience of mee ng Forest and how hun ng wolves was wrong and should not be done! In all my life, ALL I have ever wanted to do was help wild wolves, and Forest and I did just that with no more than a look! Joe said that when he looked into Forest s eyes there was no way that he could kill a wolf. I started to cry right there in front of everyone. Joe and I shook hands and exchanged contact informa on to con nue this new friendship that Forest helped create. I was so overwhelmed by my feelings and emo ons that for the rest of the day I did not care if we raised any money or not, Forest and I had done something that was only a dream to me; to save a wolf in the wild. I thank you Forest and Joe; you made a dream come true for me and for that I will be forever grateful to be privileged enough to work with an ambassador like Forest. Jealousy over Leyton s a en on resulted in many fights over the last year. Their ba les increased in intensity and some ended in minor injuries. Oddly the final brawl in early spring did not involve Leyton, but le Storm with a dripping wound to his jawline. A er several a empts at reconcilia on, Storm let us know that he had absolutely no interest in patching things up with Savannah. Storm moved out, and literally would not look back. Although currently alone, he is enjoying grumbling with neighbors for the first me, and extra walks with Leyton. A er several weeks of very loud, but injury-free squabbles, New Guinea singing dogs Foxy and Bowie decided they no longer wanted to live with Bono. We watched our adorable trio very closely, including Crystal ge ng up in the middle of the night a few mes, un l the final morning when Bono had received several bites. We quickly moved him into the animal care office, and he s already fully recovered. He has been enjoying much love from volunteers, especially Meredith. She, Erika, Anna, Elaine, Rae and Crystal made sure Bono went on frequent walks with poten al girlfriends, and fellow singing dogs, Princess and Reba. We re hoping love is in the air! Dating! Newly single Savannah was visibly distraught over her break-up, con nually pacing and looking for Storm, and even too upset to interact with caretakers. We all thought a blind date might li her spirits. Handsome bachelor, Beric Dondarrion, (Rudy) was the obvious choice. He s fully recovered from his broken jaw, and his new spacious habitat has plenty of room. So far, they are doing well together. Zoerro- The Wonder Months by Rory Zoerb Welcome to the latest in a series of ar cles I m wri ng in an effort to share an experience chock-full of facts concerning the reali es of a privately owned wolf-dog. In this ar cle I ll be talking about the third and fourth phases of the four major phases I witnessed Zoerro go through as he grew from the age of 8 weeks to 19 months as my pet. To read my previous ar cles leading up to this one, please visit The Adventure of Zoerro on our web site. The third phase I witnessed Zoerro go through, that I would call the hunter/scavenger phase, started when Zoerro was around six months old. This was also the me that Zoerro started to behave like a more confident take charge canine. I remember telling people that he thinks he s all that and a bag of chips now. At around 70 pounds and with his confident a tude, he quickly became the dominant canine over my two adult German Shepherds that he played with on a regular basis. He upped his aggressive play with me too and I responded by playing harder back. When he couldn t get me to whimper out, he would go over to Vuka, my white German Sheperd, and rough her up a li le un l she whimpered out. Hun ng was Zoerro s primary focus at this me and scavenging was something that he did in between hun ng. His drive to increase his hun ng area beyond our playground and strike out on his own increased significantly during this period. He succeeded on two separate occasions and both mes he returned rela vely quickly to Vuka and me with fresh kills. One was a bird that was s ll alive (I had no idea how he got it back then, but have since witnessed him snatching a bird out of the air as it took flight from a bush), and the other was a freshly killed large rat that I m pre y sure he hunted down in the vegeta- on-filled drainage ditch that he was always pulling to go into. He was also successfully hun ng voles and finding kills made by other animals during our long hikes through the Washington woods. His ability to find both live and dead animals was astonishing. To be tro ng down a logging road and see him make an abrupt right or le move and come down with front two paws on a vole buried under the vegeta on next to the road was impressive. I mean how did he hear it and so quickly pinpoint its loca on? The fourth phase was what I will call the big game hunter phase. If I remember that correctly, he was around 10 months old at this point. The start of this phase was marked by him taking a keen interest in people that would walk by us on the other side of the road heading in the opposite direc on of the direc on we were walking. He would very aggressively pull to the other side of the road as the person passed us. If I allowed, he would hook around behind the person and start following them at the same speed they were going. We were approximately fi y yards behind. I only let him do that a couple of mes so I could observe his head, ears and body posi on. I ve seen the same maneuver between passing canines but this was different. Another behavior I observed during the big game hunter phase started occurring on a regular basis when we would stop and play at one of Zoerro and Vuka s favorite playgrounds on one of our daily Walk Trot Lopes (WTL) routes. It was a field of thick green grass on the corner overlooking a fairly busy intersec on. Similar to disengaging himself to hunt for mice when he was younger, Zoerro started disengaging himself from play at this playground to move closer to the street and sit and watch the people in their cars as they drove by. He was looking directly into the cars at the people. I could see his head following the vehicles as they went by. On more than one occasion, motorists turned off the road, pulled up next to our playground and got out of their vehicles with cell phone camera at the ready and remarked something like, Is that a wolf? It was looking right at us as we drove by. Many mes I witnessed the driver ge ng tapped on the shoulder by the passenger who was gasping and poin ng up at Zoerro as the word wolf formed on their lips. Zoerro totally reminded me of a wolf si ng on the side of a valley looking for the easiest target as a herd of ungulates passed by. I can only imagine that if he had grown up in the wild that, at this point, he would be learning the art of coordinated big game hunting with the pack. Instead his pack was si ng down behind him in the grass wai ng for him to return to play. I came to Wild Spirit when I was about 5 weeks old in 2010 with my mom, Gypsy, and my brothers. My mother was running free in Texas and was mistaken for a wolf-dog, but is most likely a husky mix. I enjoy long walks around the Sanctuary campground, chewing bones, and of course, toys! I weigh about 67lbs and I am up-to-date on vaccina ons. I happen to be a very special girl with photo: Erika Cironte special needs. I have epilepsy and though my seizures are controlled with medica on, I s ll have one every once in a while. I get along with other dogs, but not with other animals. I have not been exposed to many kids so I would prefer a home with just adults.
