What s a Catio? Spring 2017 Catios, or enclosed cat patios, are a growing trend, and a great solution for keeping cats indoors yet still allowing them the experience of being outdoors. They provide a safe space for cats to express natural behaviors, and help protect wildlife. Keeping cats indoors is ideal, and something that we at C.A.T. strongly encourage. However, in cases where people are caring for feral cats, catios are an ideal solution when you can t bring them inside. Other times, behavior issues, such as marking and spraying, may make it seem as if living out doors is the only solution. Putting together a catio is a great alternative! For those caring for feral or community cats, catios can provide a warm, safe haven and feeding station for them. Carol Zeller Myers, of Memory Makers Photography, and her family recently built a catio on their back porch. Their cats, Osity and Smarty are already exploring and enjoying it. It might also provide a way to transition them to indoor living if they can be socialized. Catios can be simple designs that are attached to the house or part of an existing patio or porch. Other designs can be more elaborate and be placed in spots in the back yard or garden. There are companies that make kits that just need some assembly. If you re handy and of a mind to do-it-yourself, there are some great ideas and plans available online. If you do a search for catio designs you ll find sites like Catio Spaces where you can purchase plans, or ideas on sites like Pinterest and Alley Cat Allies. Whether you re giving your cat a taste of the outdoors or helping a community cat, it s a win-win solution for people and cats! Tales of happy C.A.T. cats from their new homes Millie (aka Katarina while at the CAT Association) is very relaxed and happy in her new home. She's only been here 10 days, but she is my sweet baby and has really worked her way into my heart! She's a 15 year old girl who still has lots of love to give. I hope others will consider adopting a senior cat! Rocket is making himself at home. He loves hanging out in my office and "helping" me with my computer and getting as much attention as possible! ~ Megan Boaz Hayes The Easter Kitty Is Coming!
