2 Welcome The Tasmanian division of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) hosts an annual conference for veterinarians and veterinary nurses who have an interest in small animal medicine and surgery. In 2018 it will be held at the Country Club, Launceston Tasmania on 16-18 November. The two-day scientific seminar will focus on neurology and behaviour with Dr Georgina Child, Dr Sam Long, Dr Kersti Seksel, Dr Graham Swinney and Dr Vibeke Russell. This year the social program tees-off with a round of Golf on Friday 16 November from 12pm at the Country Club 18-hole championship golf course followed by the Provet quiz/supper night. On Saturday 17 November join us for the annual and legendary Cenvet Halloween themed dress-up dinner. 4 Meet the speakers Neurology Dr Georgina Child Georgina is a graduate of University of Sydney (1980) and completed a residency in neurology at the University of California Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in 1985. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Neurology. She has consulted as a specialist small animal neurologist in Sydney since 1995 currently at SASH in North Ryde and the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She has regularly delivered lectured for undergraduate veterinary students, continuing education programs for veterinary organisations, practitioner groups and is active in mentoring students, interns and residents and in consulting with veterinarians regarding case management in practice. Behavioural Medicine Dr Kersti Seksel Kersti is fascinated by animals and why they do what they do. She is passionate about helping people understand animals better so she can improve the lives of people and their pets. Kersti has dedicated her life to understanding what makes our pets tick and learning about what to do when they misbehave. After graduating from the University of Sydney she worked in the UK and was surprised to learn that more pets die each year because of their behaviour than die of infectious, metabolic and other diseases combined. So she went back to university and started to study behaviour. She obtained a BA in Behavioural Sciences with a major in psychology as well as a Master of Arts (Hons) on her way to becoming the world s only triply boarded specialist in animal behaviour. She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Animal Behaviour, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists and a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Kersti is the principal of a specialist practice in behavioural medicine in Sydney Australia. She pioneered Puppy Preschool and Kitten Kindy classes to help owners and their pets understand each other better so that they can live together in harmony. She teaches the distance education course in Behavioural Medicine for the Centre for Veterinary Education (University of Sydney) and is an adjunct senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University. She has presented at and has been the key note speaker at numerous conferences nationally and internationally including USA, UK, many countries in Europe, South Africa, China, Japan, and Thailand. She regularly runs webinars, has written many text book chapters, written a book - Training Your Cat, writes for Dog s Life magazine, and is a consultant on VIN (Veterinary Information Network).
5 Neurology Dr Sam Long After graduating from the University of Melbourne, Sam underwent his residency specialist training at the University of Glasgow, which was followed by a PhD in canine cancer research. In 2005 he moved to Philadelphia to take up the position of Head of the Neurology Service at the University of Pennsylvania s Veterinary School. He returned to Australia in 2008 to establish Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital s neurology service, before moving to join CARE. He has an active research interest in several research fields, including epilepsy, brain tumours, and spinal cord trauma and is the author of more than 30 refereed journal articles and 4 book chapters. He also has adjunct research appointments at St Vincent s Hospital and the Bionics Institute. Canine Medicine Dr Graham Swinney Dr Swinney is a specialist in canine medicine and is working as an Internal Medicine Consultant at IDEXX Laboratories, as well as doing clinical work and teaching. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1987 and worked in small animal medicine training positions at Massey University (1988 1990) and the University of Queensland (1991 1992) before returning to the University of Sydney. Before IDEXX and the University of Sydney, Dr Swinney worked at Washington State University and in private specialist practice in Sydney. Emergency Critical Care & Feline Medicine Dr Vibeke Russell Vibeke graduated from the University of Sydney in 1996 and has been exclusively an Emergency Critical Care veterinarian since 2001. Along the way Vibeke has gained further qualifications in Feline Medicine, as well as Emergency and Critical Care. She has also completed a Masters in International Public Health. Vibeke has worked at major referral and emergency veterinary hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne, including managing large Emergency & Critical Care teams. She moved to Tasmania late in 2016 to work at AHVEC.
