2 KEY NOTE SPEAKER Dr Gary W. Ellison DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS Professor and Service Chief, Small Animal Surgery, University of Florida Health Science Center, Gainesville, Florida Dr. Ellison is a native of Chicago and earned his DVM from the University of Illinois. Gary completed a small animal internship at South Shore Veterinary Associates in Weymouth Massachusetts. Following this he practiced general small animal practice in San Francisco California. He completed a residency in Small Animal Surgery and received a MS in surgery from Colorado State University. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and practiced as a surgical specialist in San Diego California prior to joining the faculty of the University of Florida in small animal surgery. He has coordinated the laboratory surgical courses at Florida for many years and received a special service award from the University to acknowledge this in Gary has served as a visiting professor at the University of Tennessee, Murdoch University in Western Australia, the University of Helsinki in Finland, Ross University in St Kitts, the University of Bristol in England and Aristotle University in Greece. He is author or coauthor on 95 refereed publications and PI or CoI on 25 funded grants. Gary s areas of interest include general and gastrointestinal surgery, urogenital surgery, wound care surgery and minimally invasive procedures. He currently is Professor and Chief of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Florida. Gary is married with 5 children. VENUE Four Points by Sheraton Geelong, Eastern Beach, Geelong. 3 PRESENTERS VETERINARY STREAM Dr Arthur House BSc BVMS PhD DECVS Arthur is an internationally recognised specialist small animal surgeon in both Australia and Europe. He has pursued his passion in small animal surgery since graduation achieving post graduate qualifications in surgery, initially in general practice, followed by advanced surgical training in a multi-discipline university hospital. Arthur was a lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at the Royal Veterinary College, London prior to his return home to Australia. In addition to providing specialist surgical referral services to his patients, Arthur continues to be active in veterinary postgraduate training through provision of continuing education lectures and supervision of PhD students. Arthur has a broad range of publications and has been an author of several textbooks. Arthur has an extensive range of specialist surgical skills and strives to maximise patient outcomes by application of best practice and evidence-based medicine and surgery. Dr Elise Boller DVM, DACVECC Elise graduated from Colorado State University in 2001 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree before completing a small animal medical and surgical internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. After a residency in Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania, she became a board certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) in She then practiced in a private veterinary referral centre as an Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) specialist. After two years in private practice, she returned to the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where she served as a veterinarian in the intensive care unit for the five years preceding her appointment with the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Veterinary Science. As a Lecturer in ECC at Melbourne Uni, she is the curriculum coordinator for the Section of Emergency and Critical Care and is the Director of the ECC residency program. Elise is so pleased to be working in Melbourne Uni s Section of Emergency and Critical Care which now boasts 4 DACVECC s and 3 nurses with VTS (ECC) credentials (Veterinary Technician Specialists in Emergency and Critical Care). Elise s current professional interests include sepsis-induced coagulation disorders, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, university clinical teaching, and optimisation of referral-based medicine. Dr Brian McErlean MVB MRCVS Born in great antiquity in Dublin, Brian qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in He arrived in WA in 1981 and was the founding partner in a veterinary practice which grew to employ seven partners and six associates on the outskirts of Perth and retired from practice in He was also a director of a veterinary wholesale company owned by veterinarians for 11 years and served four years as chairman until it was taken over by Provet. Active in the AVA for 30 years Brian is one of the four trustees of the AVA Benevolent Fund and is also the VSB inspector in WA. Currently a volunteer in a UK-based veterinary charity, Worldwide Veterinary Service, he has recently returned from working in India in a dog neutering and vaccination program designed to reduce the incidence of rabies in the population. Married to a West Australian he is the father to two boys. Having lost three colleagues and friends to suicide, a desire to reduce the incidence of depression and suicide in his colleagues propelled him into a two year Community Coordinator position for AVA WA with Onelife. This ends at the end of He is the 2013 recipient of the Ian Miller Medal which is awarded for services to the profession in WA. VETERINARY NURSE STREAM Dr Debbie Calnon BSc, BVMS, MANZCVSc (Animal Behaviour), CertIVTAA, DipVET-P, Dip TAA, CertIVTC Debbie, a Veterinarian and Animal Behaviourist, has been seeing referral animal behaviour cases in Melbourne for over 15 years. She has also been an examiner for veterinarians for their membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Surgeons, and continues to mentor veterinarians for their preparation for this qualification. Debbie is the Immediate Past President of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group (AVBIG). Debbie has always promoted veterinary behavioural medicine as being critical to the well-being of animals in the home, on the farm and in the wild and, to this end, has a long history and extensive experience in various educational roles. Debbie s present teaching role fits in nicely with behavioural consultations both house calls and telephone consultations for clients in Victoria and in Western Australia, where she travels regularly. Dr Jacqui Ley BVSc (Hons), MANZVCS (VeterinaryBehaviour), PhD, CMAVA, DECVBM-CA Jacqui is a Veterinarian Behaviourist with seven years experience, over 15 years experience in companion animal veterinary practice and over 20 years experience as a dog trainer. While studying she recognised veterinary behavioural medicine as an area of veterinary medicine that brought together her interests in animal behaviour, animal training and the functioning brain. She has a PhD in Psychology and still conducts research into the human-animal bond and mental health in companion animals. She sees behaviour cases in Victoria and NSW and has appeared as a presenter on the ABC s program Can We Help discussing animal behaviour. She regularly gives talks to and conducts training sessions for dog owners, dog trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians and veterinary nurses, dog clubs about owning dogs, understanding dogs, cats and other pets - helping them fit into our confusing and complex world. She is owned and managed by twin boys, two neurotic cats and a work avoiding horse.
4 PRESENTER VETERINARY NURSE STREAM Dr Jennifer Carter DVM, MANZCVS, DACVAA, CVPP Jennifer graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 from Ross University, located in St Kitts in the Caribbean. She continued her postgraduate training at North Carolina State University, completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery and then a residency in anaesthesia. Upon completion of her residency, Jennifer joined Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, teaching anaesthesia and respiratory physiology to veterinary students. Jennifer is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Anaesthesiologists, and also became a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner with the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management in She has authored peer-reviewed publications and presented at a number of conferences in the USA. Her primary research and clinical interests are in the fields of pain management and haemodynamics. Ms Carol Bradley Associate in Veterinary Education, Cert IV VN, Cert IV AWPT, Cert III Health (Sterilising Technician) From Carol was the Head of the Central Sterilising Supply Service and Supervisor of the Small Animal and Equine Operating Theatres. During this time she participated in the clinical training of undergraduate veterinary students in aseptic technique, operating room etiquette, introduction to surgical skills and sterilising processes at the University of Melbourne s Veterinary Teaching School, Werribee. In 1997 she was the first veterinary nurse to successfully apply and pass the Certificate III in Sterilizing and Processing Techniques Course. She attained her Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training through the University of Melbourne in Carol achieved the status of Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (RVC, London) in In 2009, Carol became a member of the Biomaterial s Surgical Research Unit working with Glenn Edwards, supporting cardiovascular research in addition to delivering surgical training to undergraduates. For a period of 15 years, Carol facilitated surgical workshops for Sydney University s Post Graduation Foundation, working with surgical icons, Bruce Christie, Glenn Edwards and Wing Tip Wong in continuing education in the surgical discipline. Carol is a popular speaker, presenting for the VNCA, TAFE Colleges and the University of Melbourne (Faculty of Veterinary Science) nursing conferences. She also runs nursing workshops in suturing technique, aseptic technique and instrument care, sterilizing & processing skills. Carol has been involved in educational media for undergraduates, postgraduates and nurses, including visual media in topics such as; Preparation of the Surgical Team, Instrument Care, Packaging, Sterilizing, Patient Preparation, Gloving, Gowning, Draping and is a co-author of the software package Virtual Surgery, an online learning tool for veterinary undergraduates and nurses. Mr Andrew Ferrie Andrew Ferrie, owner and director of Gruff Design is a Designer, Mobile and Social Media Developer. Having worked early in his career in the advertising & design industry with the likes of British Airways & Times of London he moved to Australia and set up Gruff Design to focus on small to medium enterprise businesses. With the explosion of social and mobile media, he turned his knowledge in advertising and marketing to these new trends. Now Gruff Design consults and develops for businesses throughout Australia & New Zealand, managing over 90 businesses social media strategies. Gruff Design are also the developers of PocketVet, a health and welfare management smart phone app used by Veterinary clinics throughout Australia. Ms Meaghan Owen Cert IV VN, Dipl VN Meaghan has been nursing for nine years. Five of those years were spent in General Practice where she obtained her Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing. She was fortunate to travel overseas and work as a surgical nurse in Birmingham at the RSPCA for three months in On return to Australia she secured a job as a surgical nurse at a specialist facility and completed her Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Surgical). Meaghan has a keen interest in orthopaedics but enjoys all aspects of surgical nursing. More recently Meaghan has developed an interest in education and enjoys sharing her knowledge with like minded nurses.
