Sharing the Joy Of A Bonding Moment Hello, I heard you have some baby lovebirds. Music to my ears. I love the process of seeing someone fall in love with a baby bird, and seeing the baby fall in love. My friend Jane brought her neighbor to see my handfed baby lovebirds. She fell in love with the first bird out of the cage and took home a very happy baby. The next day Jane called and said she couldn t stop thinking about the yellow and light orange baby. She came over and we got the two remaining birds out and played with them. The one Jane liked resisted getting on the perch and wouldn t stay on her shoulder. He turned away from her. The other little bird, however, was perky and jumped on the stick every time it came his way. I could hear his little bird voice saying This is my mom. Pick me, pick me. Jane accepted the little guy and called me the next day to say how happy she and her new little bird were. THE SEED FACTORY Teri Applegate is a new member to the club this year, and she s bringing the Seed Factory with her. She can take orders and deliver seed to the meetings or bird marts. You can contact her directly by text at 209 277 2373. She will be at the Merced Exotic Bird Expo on August 13 and our mini mart on August 20 th. Soo, we have our Seed Factory back. We re happy. Terese CCCBC Annual Picnic One of the nicest perks of being part of CCCBC is attending our annual picnic! Robin and Clay did the honors in Stevinson this year on the hottest day in July. And magic happened when the breezes cooled down the day. We were so comfortable out on the back lawn under the trees we didn t even need the cooling station, which was a sprinkler tied to a tree. We lunched on brats and a table full of goodies and enjoyed seeing the birds and the antiques nailed to fences and barn walls. The unique outhouse is worth mentioning, too. Thank you to our hosts and everyone who came you all made it a perfect day. Janae Place MEMBERS - Remember to bring raffle prizes! This is one of our favorite parts of the meetings. What s Happening in Your Aviary This Month Barbara In July I acquired a splendid pair (ha! get it?) of Scarlett chested parrots! The female is a cinnamon mutation and the male is a lovely, dare I say, handsome, scarlett chest. Bruce and I drove to Loomis to purchase these beautiful birdies from a very nice lady who has a wonderful home in the foothills with many varieties of birds, including a very large Macaw. I really wanted to see her aviaries, but didn't want to impose. Bruce told me we can ask next time we go there...did he really just give me permission to buy more birds?! Well, I'll have to take him up on that, won't I? Terese This is the year of the finch for me. I ve always had lovebirds and now my shafttail finches are starting to have babies. The tiny red bellied waxbills have had a couple of babies and so have the lavender red tails. I m getting some beautiful lovebird babies this year, too. Nothing from the cobalt blue lovebirds, though. Julie My New English Zebra Finch aviary, still a work in progress, needs some greenery, but it's up and running. They're happy little birds! Thank you Janna and Joel! Janna Many of you know that Joel is putting up with his third bout of bird fanciers lung. Our birds had to be re-homed very quickly and my thanks to Kim at the Amador Club for taking cockatiel, Barney, to Paulette who is loving my lovebirds, and to Julie who has taken quail, cages and the big aviary. We moved four elderly cockatiels far from the house and hope we can keep them with us. All is well.

Bird fancier's lung From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Bird fancier's lung Micrograph of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, the histologic correlate of bird fancier's lung. Lung biopsy. Trichrome stain. Bird fancier's lung is a type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by bird droppings. The lungs become inflamed with granuloma formation. Bird fancier's lung (BFL), also called bird-breeder's lung and pigeon-breeder's lung, is a subset of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). This disease is caused by the exposure to avian proteins present in the dry dust of the droppings and sometimes in the feathers of a variety of birds. Birds such as pigeons, parakeets, cockatiels, shell parakeets (budgerigars), parrots, turtle doves, turkeys and chickens have been implicated. People who work with birds or own many birds are at risk. Bird hobbyists and pet store workers may also be at risk. Symptoms This disease is an inflammation of the alveoli in the lungs. Initial symptoms are breathlessness especially after sudden exertion or when exposed to temperature change and can be very similar to asthma, hyperventilation syndrome or pulmonary embolism. One of the defining characteristics of bird fanciers lung is that many medical tests will show a normal range of results and it will be identified by X-ray or CT scans showing physical changes to the lung structure (a ground glass appearance). If someone with BFL has been exposed to avian proteins they will see symptoms within 4 6 hours. Symptoms include chills, fever, breathlessness, non-productive cough and chest discomfort. In the chronic form there is usually anorexia, weight loss, extreme tiredness and progressive interstitial fibrosis which is the most disabling feature of the disease as this causes scarring on the lungs which reduces the lungs ability to move air in and out, and as a result sufferers have repeated chest infections and ultimately struggle to breathe. This condition is occasionally fatal. Treatment BFL symptoms improve in the absence of the bird proteins which caused the disease. Therefore, it is advisable to remove all birds, bedding and pillows containing feathers from the house as well as washing all soft furnishings, walls, ceilings and furniture. Certain small mammals kept as pets have the same or similar proteins in their fur and feces and so should be removed. Peak flow measurements will indicate a lung condition however a spirometric test on lung capacity and patients ability to move air in and out of the lungs plus in more advanced cases an X-ray test or CT scan is available to confirm whether someone has the disease or not. Steroid inhalers similar to those used for asthma are effective or in cases where the patient finds inhaling difficult high dosages of steroids combined with bone density protecting drugs are used to treat a person with BFL, reducing the inflammation and hopefully preventing scarring. Recovery varies from patient to patient depending on what stage the condition was at when the patient consulted the doctor, the speed of diagnosis and application of the appropriate treatment to prevent residual damage to the lungs and many make a full recovery. However, BFL may reoccur when in contact with birds or other allergens.

Bird Club Business Cards Free to All Members Every member can advertise the Bird Club just by handing out a card to someone interested in birds We have business cards available for members to use. The cards have the club logo and the member s name and phone number on the front. On the back, the entire year s club calendar, including bird marts. It s so perfect to have all that information on one card. Members benefit, too. They get free business cards. So far, Leo has passed out the most cards, 30 in the first month. Let s catch up with him. If you talk to lots of bird people, or go to yard sales, carry a few in your wallet. Members who have had the cards are now ordering more. We ll have ten or more members at the Merced Exotic Bird and Animal Expo on the 13 th, passing out cards to the customers and vendors. Let s talk about Merced at the meeting and get feedback. We ll see how well they work to bring the public and how members like using them. Contact Jimmy at jdc100@sbcglobal.net or 209 996 6615 to order cards. Do you ever get a chance to get away for a few days? Probably not, if you have large, multiple aviaries, and maybe an elderly dog or cat. It s difficult to find someone who can care for birds, dogs, cats, your house, and plants. Many of us have large valuable bird collections and pets. We need someone there, rather than coming and going. I would like to introduce my friend and house sitter, aviary sitter, and dog sitter, Carolyne We have been friends for 16 years. She s taken care of my house and animals for weeks at a time while I was out of the country or just away for a few days. She stays at our house frequently when we re here too. Carolyne is a retired banker and has several craft businesses now. She is single, independent, has her own car and is absolutely reliable. I could easily get 20 or more people to vouch for her honesty and attention to detail. Call or text her at 209 612 4836 to discuss your needs. Carr Terese Davis, 209 247 3206
