That certainly reminds us that it s just about time for our school s annual Ag Day. It s been great to see a renewed interest in the highlight of this event, the animals, over recent years. New families joining our school often ask if our school has kept its Ag Day; I m always pleased to assure them that this special occurrence is alive and well at Helensville School. There is a certain work ethic associated with a rural lifestyle which is clearly valued by our community and which is a positive aspect of our children s heritage. More than anything, Ag Day gives our children with the opportunity to participate in some rich experiences. Whether it s the excited lead-up here at school, the items carefully prepared at home or the strong community spirit evident on the evening, Ag Day provides our children with some memories to treasure. We look forward to seeing you all at this year s Ag Day, and especially to celebrate what our children have prepared for display along with their special accomplishments on the day. Agricultural Day Afternoon/Evening Expectations The following are activities that are to be completed at home. Each student is expected to present at least one activity from the whole school list as well as at least one activity from their team activity list. Keen students can do many activities or sections as they would like to! Completed items are to be brought to the hall on either Thursday 15 th of October from 2.45 5.00pm or on Friday 16 th of October before 3.30pm. For further clarification of these activities please see your child s teacher. Each section has a corresponding coloured participation certificate. Collect your certificate from the steward. As well as participating in whole school activities and team activities students may: Enter one of the animal categories: Large Animals (lambs, calves, kids), Small Caged Animals, Dogs, Cat Photos Purchase a blanket space and sell items of their choice in Blanket Sales Year 6/7/8s can enter into the Young Farmers Competition. Heats will be held at school with the final competition happening on Ag Day Evening It is hoped that everyone will come along and support our school s major event of the year Choices for Whole School Activities The following activities are whole school options for students enter and participate in. There is no limit to the size of your container although you do need to get it to school in one piece! Miniature Scene Can you put together a scene in a portable container a garden, jungle, farmyard, forest, magical kingdom, city scape, bike park, traffic jam? You must use some natural materials (e.g. rocks, stones, dirt, leaves) in your scene. Entries are displayed and judged in team sections. Each group has a corresponding coloured participation certificate. Collect your certificate from the steward. Most obvious theme Originality Interesting use of materials Cat Photos Due to the stressful nature of cats being enclosed inside a cage for extended periods on Ag Day, there is not a cats section for small caged animals. Instead, we offer Cat Photos. Bring a photo of your beloved moggy cat to be displayed. Please also include: a label with details about your animal its name a brief description regarding your photo Entries are displayed and judged in team sections. Lambs, Goats and Calves All animals will be tethered to the fence which runs between the bush and the top field All animals must have leads which can be easily tied up and have an adequate supply of water. No chains allowed. Animals may start arriving at 3.30pm. Please collect a numbered tag from the steward who will have these tags available from 3.30pm to 4.15pm on the bark area. Parents and/or students must stay with the animals All students need to be ready with their animals as judging begins at 4.30pm sharp Students must ensure their animals are safely tethered and well cared for Students may not walk around the school with their animal Students will be split into two groups for judging: Junior and Senior Animals can be entered in Ag Day competitions by one student only Any child who receives a 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd or 4 th ribbon at the Helensville School Agricultural Day is eligible to enter the South Kaipara Group Day event. This year s Group Day will be held on Friday 6 th November, information will be given to those eligible after our school s Ag Day competition. Lamb Categories All lambs must be docked. Please arrange to take your animals home as soon as possible after judging to avoid distress and allow you and your child to enjoy the rest of the Ag Day Evening events. Prizegiving and the presentation of cups will happen at 7.00pm from the stage.
Dogs Dogs must enter the school grounds on a lead via the bottom Rimu Street entry only Dogs are to be tied up on the bottom field by the Rimu Street/Makiri Street corner At no stage are dogs permitted to be walked through the school grounds All dogs must be owned by the family showing it and be provided with water to drink All dogs must wear a current registration tag All dogs must be fully vaccinated Anything left by your dog must be picked up and disposed of! Small Caged Animals Small caged animals will be held in the GaTE room (beside the hall) Please ensure your animal has adequate water and food Please ensure all enclosures are closed and fastened Make sure all equipment you bring with your animal is clearly labelled Ensure your animal is used to being in a cage. If not, you will need to acclimatize your pet over a period of time so that it does not fret on Ag Day. If you can, put together an informative brochure/poster on your pet. This will help the judges to make their difficult decision! Please attach your animal brochure/poster to the animal s enclosure. Brochure/poster will also be judged. Students are split into team groups. Each group has a corresponding coloured participation certificate. Collect your certificate from the steward. Certificate colours: Your informative brochure/poster will be judged on the following: Details of how you feed your animal Details of how you groom your animal Details of what your pet likes and doesn t like The time and care you have put into producing your presentation Hanging Baskets Hanging baskets will be hung on the iron fence above Room 4 If you have a themed basket please hang a decorated card with the theme clearly labelled Entries are displayed and judged in team sections. Each team has a corresponding coloured participation certificate. These will be given out when the hanging baskets are brought to school on Thursday 15th October or Friday 16th October. To be included in the judging, baskets must be at school at by 4.00pm on Friday 16th October. Blanket Sales Students are invited once again to participate in Blanket Sales. For $2 students can buy a blanket space. This gives them space on the top court to put down their blanket and sell goods of their choice to buyers unwanted toys, books, crafts, food! Students must provide their own float or change Goods to be sold must not be broken (honesty system) Bargaining encouraged! Once sold, no returns One support person only Junior Farmer Competition The Junior Farmer Contest will be held at 6.30pm on the top field Finalists will move around stations completing appropriate activities which will not be revealed until the day! We are all looking forward to supporting this year s finalists. Please note that although this event is open to Year 6, 7 and 8 students, only the highest scoring Year 6 or 7 student will be selected to represent the school at the A & P show next February. This is because our student representative must be attending a primary school (and in February of 2016 our current Year 8 students will have moved on to College). Calendar/Card/Diary Art Every year Helensville Primary School offers families an opportunity to purchase their children s artwork in the form of a calendar, card set, diary, and mouse pad. This year we are pleased to be able to offer you your child s art work in the form of a sketch book. Not only does each purchase donate funds to our school, but these calendars, cards, diaries, mouse pads and sketch pads make fabulous presents for family around the country or overseas. Art can be viewed and orders made for calendars, cards, diaries and mouse pads from the hall kitchen. Create your own musical instrument: Gather up those rubber bands and tissue boxes make sure they make an awesome sound you might even be able to create a whole band! Lower Middle Team: Underwater Jar: Be a deep sea explorer and create your own miniature sea underworld in an upside down jar! Cardboard Box Creation: Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a robot or is it a.? Design and construct your own cardboard creation using a variety of different sized and shaped boxes. Bring your creation to life with colour and character Animal Mask: Who is that behind the mask? Reduce, reuse and recycle to mastermind your own Ag Day animal mask Upper Middle Team: Toilet Roll People: Can you create something better than this awesome Ninja? This is your chance to be a creative genius, what sort of person can you make? Drab to Fab: Spice up your toys life with a new outfit. Get creative and make this out of your recycled products around home. Turn your trash into treasure Cleaner Creatures: Get crafty and create your cute, creepy, or crazy critter! Frame your favourite picture using twigs! The smaller the twigs, the better. See the picture for an example.
0 4 Year Old / Pre-school Display On display in our hall, future Helensville School pupils display their creative side! Information has been delivered to all local preschools. Any of our younger community members are invited to enter one (or more) of the following: A creature/animal made from anything: pipe cleaners, playdough, clay, boxes, sticks, straws, a rock A decorated hat Entries may be dropped off to the hall any time during the day of Thursday 15 th up until 5.00pm and all day Friday 16 th October until 3.30pm. Please make sure that all preschool entries have a name, age and preschool if appropriate, attached so we can give everyone a certificate Agricultural Day MEGA Raffle All school families have been given a book of 5 raffle tickets to sell. It is hoped that each family will sell their tickets to friends and family that may not be able to purchase tickets from us by Wednesday 14 th October. Tickets are $10 each, with each ticket sold going into every draw for what is heading towards over 100 prizes! Please check out our school website for an updated prize list www.helensville.school.nz. Winners do not have to be present to collect their prize. Please see the school office if you are able to sell extra tickets for us.
