Our best buddies love the taste of many of these, and quite a few are find for them to share with us, but there are also quite a few that are not recommended for our furry friends. Here are a few of them: Nuts! Some nuts such as peanuts, cashews, coconut are ok in small quantities, but others such as macadamia nuts, walnuts, pecans and others are dangerously toxic for dogs. Macadamias are the worst and can cause vomiting, increased temperature, lethargy, and even affect the nervous system. Do NOT feed macadamia nuts! Ice cream (also yogurt, milk, and other dairy products) can cause problems as many dogs are more or less lactose intolerant after they are weaned. Ice cream in small quantities as a treat can usually be tolerated, but be aware of the amount. Also, yogurt in small amounts can be useful if your dog is having digestive problems and needs some probiotics, but again keep the amount small. Peanut butter is fine in limited amounts as a supplement or a treat as is wheat, bread, and whole grains like quinoa although many dogs do not seem to digest corn as well as was once thought usual. So if your buddy steals your well earned PB&J sandwich just make another for yourself. Fish are generally good for dogs although make sure that any salmon are thoroughly cooked (to at least 145 degrees) to be safe from any parasites. Shrimp should also be completely peeled, including the tail for fear of risk to the dog s throat. Most meats are also ok if well cooked although ham is high in salt content and Holiday Treats?? should be limited. And! Pork bones when cooked are apt to splinter and cause harm. Turkey is also ok but skin should be removed due to the amount of fat. Most fowl should be well cooked and deboned as the bones can be very brittle. If feeding any fowl bones, limit them to necks and backs and RAW. Cheese given as a treat, not the main course, is perfectly fine, and as we know, very popular in the canine corps. Be very careful of garlic, garlic salt, cinnamon, and chocolate. All of these are toxic to dogs and garlic particularly so! Also remember, the darker the chocolate, the higher the danger! But garlic, of all of these, is the most dangerous as all of the onion family is dangerous to dogs. It is five times more poisonous than leeks, onions, shallots, etc. and can cause anemia, including pale gums, elevated heart rate, collapsing, even death. Chocolate can also cause death, and there is lots of chocolate around at the Holidays. Cuidado!!! For sure!!! A few veggies to avoid are: asparagus (not very nutritionally useful), broccoli (ok in very small quantities), cherries which could cause cyanide poisoning in large amounts. Grapes in ANY amount can cause kidney failure! Peaches (no pits), pears, cantelope, oranges, peas, green beans, pineapple (with the rind removed), strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, potatoes (cooked, not mashed), sweet potatoes, all of these are ok. Skip the onions, tomatoes (at least any green parts), and let them have at most of the rest of the vegetable garden. Oh, skip the spinach as it could cause kidney damage in large quantities. Looks like Thanksgiving will be open to all this year!! Page 1

AKC Launches Nose Work Program By Rosemary Burtch Sandia Dog Obedience Club is proud to announce that it has been licensed to offer AKC Scent Work Trials and to has approved two of our members to be AKC Scent Work Judges. Scent work is based on detection dog training and there are several organizations which offer titles. They differ slightly in the searches and odors used. However, the basic skills needed for any of them are the same - the dog searches for, identifies, Scent work (Nose work) is great for all handlers and dogs. If you ve got a youngster who is not ready for regular obedience or agility training, get them started using their noses. Likewise, if you have an oldster who needs to keep busy, scent work can brighten up their days. Nose work is not strenuous, and dogs and handlers with limitations can have great fun with it. The Introduction to Nosework class starts Wednesday, Jan 3 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at $96.75 for 6 weeks. This class will introduce all odors used by the major scent work organizations, develop a clear reliable indication and start searches. It is being taught by Dee Falk. Dee is an AKC and UKC judge. With her Border Terrier, Bezel, she is close to finishing the 5th and final nosework level in UKC. Page 2 Scents & Nonscents
Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Your Editor Don t forget! Our November meeting is a week early and will be held November 17. Our December meeting is also a week early and will occur December 15. Our December meeting is our Christmas Party. We will have our doggy gift exchange. Please bring your dog(s) if you wish to participate and a present for each of your dogs to exchange. Presents should be unwrapped. Come and enjoy the Cheer! SDOC is having a Tricks class beginning on November 13. This will be an 6 week class meeting at 7:30 PM on Mondays. This class will focus on learning the tricks required for the new AKC Tricks titles, with the goal of being able to complete one or more tricks titles at the completion of the class! All dogs are welcome including puppies. We're even working on having an AKC Tricks Evaluator come to SDOC on the last night of class to do Title evaluations -- so you'll be ready and able to get your dog a Tricks title or 2 before Christmas! A Major! thank you to Barbara Petersen who, on top of being Hospitality Chair for our big Halloween party also cleaned out and labeled the shelves in the refrigerator, evened the legs on the microwave so that it cooks properly again, and labeled the shelves in the cabinets so that people can find things again. Wow!!! Some dogs just need a little extra recognition! Not everyone knew the Faulkner s beloved fawn Chichihua, Brandy. I was probably just a little more aware of her because I met her when she just started obedience and was still a little half scared, half grumbly little dog who would tear out of the ring and all the way back to her traveling crate when frightened. She improved immensely and became active in rally, obedience, nosework, agility, and who knows what else! She surprisingly soon became my very favorite Chichuahua! I m not a big fan of the breed to be honest, but she was a charmer. Brandy died recently as do all dogs, but I absolutely know that she ll be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge when the rest of her family arrives. And they better be as delighted to see them as she will be to see them. Or I bet she bites them!!! There will be an ASCA breed and obedience trial and show this weekend, Nov. 11 & 12 at Hoffman Park. Short notice, but do come and participate. Obedience is open to all!! As usual, arrive by about 8 a.m. to sign up and prepare to show by 9 a.m. The Doberman on page one is Marcie Jensen s VooDoo (Ch. Cha-rish Black Magic) dressed up for Halloween. Last year Voo-Doo appeared as a vampire queen! Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. Page 3

Marco invited all SDOC members to come and take a look at the grounds! He would like SDOC to consider holding Obedience, Rally, Agility trials with them in the future.. Kim and Marco Banales will hold a Black Friday Conformation Show and Go at SDOC on Friday, November 24 from 12 noon to 4 pm. The next SDOC Membership meeting will be on November 17. Prez Sez By Betty Pearson November already and this is the last S&N of 2017.. We have two more meetings coming up, both early due to the holidays. The Nov one is our annual election, on the 17 th and December is the Christmas party on the 15 th. It is always great fun for us and our dogs come and bring an unwrapped toy, as many toys as you bring dogs and then the dogs get to pick their own.as well as games and always wonderful goodies. To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! It has been a busy year, lots of classes and wonderful trials, not to mention classes and drills. The drills are closing down for the year but there are still classes going, and as I write, some upcoming as well. Soon we ll be starting to plan for the 2018 events. If there is anything that you d like to be involved in or help with, please let me or one of the board members know. It is a great way to learn more about the things SDOC does and get to know fellow members better. We are glad to have new people want to be involved. It truly does take a village to get things we do done. Please bring us ideas that you may have as well. We had a wonderful Novice Agility trial in Nov, and there have been lots of very nice comments about it and the condition of the field.. Thank you to all who worked so hard for this and thank you to all the TDs, instructors, trial chairs, stewards, and all who have worked to make 2017 a great year for SDOC Some of you will be traveling both to trial and for the holidays. That Christmas Tree By Laurel Drew Christmas Trees are an important part of the decorations for Christmas. Nearly all homes usually have one whether it s decorated formally, informally as a family tree, in some weird and wonderful special decorations, by the family or some formal decorations person. No matter who or how the tree is decorated, it needs some consideration as to what items are on or under it. First on are usually those strings of lights. After many years of worrying about puppies and electric lights, I finally opted for those new trees with the fiber optics. They are quite pretty, and the lights can be adjusted to show one color or an assortment, and they are all wired right in so that there are not a lot of strings that can be pulled down or broken so less risk of electrocution for your pets. Ornaments made of glass are dangerous for the dogs so they either go very hig on the tree or need to stay in the box. OR, you can put that exercise pen to good use and fence the tree safely away from the hounds. One trick I ve used for a long time is to hang an assortment of bells of various materials around the lower branches as an early warning system. If a bell rings, it s time to check out the herd. Cherished ornaments should also go high on the tree or stay in the box. Some people I know have a special corner for their tree and have a discreet screw placed in the ceiling to which the top of the tree is attached so that it won t easily fall over. Salt ornaments such as those often made by school children in class should be used carefully. Place them in areas not easily reached by pets. These ideas are useful with any kind of pet. Dogs are not the only ones to get in trouble. The flour, salt, and water can be toxic if much salt is used. Tinsel, whether the silver strands, webbing that creates that soft glow to the tree, or puffs of cotton, and colored plastic can all cause digestive problems for a dog so be aware of their dangers as well. Has your dog accomplished something new? E-mail all the details to the Editor. AND if there s a CH or X anywhere in that title, please include a picture of your dog! Even the tree stands that hold water can be dangerous for your dogs as the fertilizers leak from the tree sap to the water where it could be lapped up if the stand is left uncovered. Better to use an artificial tree. Watch out too for florists arrangements and other artifical or evergreen arrangements. Lastly, remember that while you may treasure those handmade crèche scenes, your dogs probably won t so they may consider that handmade one from Africa crunchy, not unique and enjoy taste testing it. And those Christmas cookies? Uh-uh!! Too many ingredients may be far from healthy for your pets (to say nothing for your waistline). Keep them in the cookie jars! Otherwise, enjoy your decorations, pick up a few new toys for the pets, and enjoy the Holidays!! Page 7
