Science and Technology Ask questions about and describe some natural occurrences, using their own observations; Explore patterns in the natural and built environment (observations and representations (e.g., drawings, writing); State problems and pose questions before and during investigations; Make predictions and observations before and during investigations; Select and use materials to carry out their own explorations during investigations; Communicate results and findings from individual and group investigations; Select and use tools, equipment, and materials to construct things using the design process; Communicate and record results and findings after constructing things either individually or in groups. Conduct simple investigations through fee exploration, focused exploration, and guided activity using inquiry skills (questioning, planning, predicting, observing, and communicating).

Observations: The creatures were sitting on the table and the students do not know what they are. R.B. He is climbing up. K.D. They are caterpillars. K.D. It has fur. A.C. He is so crawly. R.C. He is holding on. M.Y. They eat leaves.

I Wonder.

A.R. - They have white lines R.C. Why does it have a spike on the front? K.D. They have suction cups J.J. Why do they have patterns? K.D. They have pointy feet

How do they look? C.C. Green J.J. Some are fat and some are skinny K.Z. They look like they have 16 feet J.J. The light ones do not have white lines but the dark ones do

J.J. They are having a race J.C. They can climb up strings L.L. They are white and blue K.Z. What s their favourite food? Are they hungry? J.J. They re messy M.Z. They are so cute J.Q. He is so cute T.Y. They climb T.A. Don t squish them or they will die

C.Y. They are green K.Z. They are racing car and they go to the finish line A.C. These two are crawling on each other K.D. Why are they climbing out?

Students are building a house: K.Z. I want to know what they are R.C. Caterpillar is going up D.Y. We make home K.D. I can see they have webbed feet

What do you think they are? S.C. Snails K.D. They are caterpillars T.A. We can t squish them or they will die forever E.T. They have lots of eyes T.A. Why is one so small? He is so crawly

The class went on the smartboard to research information of what our creatures are. What are we doing on the smartboard? J.J. We are going on the internet What does the internet site help us to do? J.J. It helps us to spell words What does research mean? K.D. Looking at them with magnifying glasses K.D. We have to check them out K.L. Looking up information

We asked Google questions... A.R. Why do they have small feet? I.J. Why they don t have rainbow colors? K.D. Why do they have little hair? K.Z. I want to know what they eat

J.J. Why are they always trying to crawl on our hands? D.Y. How many feet do they have? J.C. Why is he so green on top? C.C. Why are they running away from the tray? R.C. Why does it have so many colours? K.Z. Why does it feel like a leaf? K.D. Why does it tickle when it walks on my hand? A.R. Why so they have one spiky thing on the back on top? K.D. Why is it upside down and it sticks on my finger? R.C. - Why does it have so many colours? A.R. Why do they have suction cups on the bottom of the feet? A.R. - What creatures have one spiky thing on their back? K.Z. What do they eat?

Students decided we could find out more information if we knew exactly what kind of creatures we had. We started typing in descriptive words to see if we could find pictures of our creatures. Akshan - What creatures have spiky things on their back? This is the answer we got. We noticed it looked completely different from what we had in front of us so we had to continue to investigate. J.J. It s not the same colour.

C.C. What creatures have sticky feet? J.J. It s yellow A.R. What animal have sticky feet? J.J. They don t have arms sticking out

The children decided to ask Google Do caterpillars have pointy and sticky feet? Once we saw this picture we knew we were starting to get closer! We then asked: What caterpillars have a horn on the top? The answer that came up was hornworms. All our hard work in investigating what our creatures are had finally paid off!

What is the life cycle of a hornworm?
