Issue #03 Training is our Motto Fall 2006 Labor Day weekend saw the Taste of Colorado and Purina s Rally To Rescue Across America. Nikeno s had the opportunity to have our own booth at this event. The Rally To Rescue was an effort to raise awareness about various shelters as well as gain donations for these organizations. Purina brought treadmills both people and dog size and for every five minutes walked they donated $5 to the general fund (to be split among the participating shelters). Nikeno s brought dogs from our program to highlight the training we do and we used the occasion to promote our philosophy as well as to gain exposure to a new set of individuals. Bachelor in particular was a huge success. He was featured on Channel 7 News as part of the Rally To Rescue segment, and he had many admirers throughout the course of the day. The volunteers that helped work the booth all did their part by walking on the treadmills, but the dogs were not to be outdone. Each of our animals took a turn on the doggie treadmill to help benefit the effort. The Rally To Rescue logged over twenty-three hours walked over the course of two days and we d like to thank everybody that participated. We appreciated everyone that stopped by the booth to say hi and those that inquired about information on NSC. Ingredients: Gretchen s Goodies Apple Pupcakes 2¾ cups water ¼ cup applesauce, unsweetened ¼ teaspoon vanilla 4 tablespoons honey 4 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup dried apple chips 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 egg, slightly beaten Georgia, Gina, Bachelor & Sakara at Rally To Rescue Successful Adoptions: 18 Upcoming Events This year the Clearwater Halloween Party will benefit NSC. It is currently scheduled for October 21st and is a great opportunity to bring your dog for fun and games. There will be prize drawings as well as costume contests. We still need volunteers to help setup, run and break down the event. For more information please contact Ginger by phone at 303-548-3912 or by email at Ginger@NikenosSecondChances.com. Directions: Preheat oven to 350. Spray muffin pan with cooking spray. Mix wet ingredients together in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix dry ingredients. Gradually add the wet to the dry ingredients until completely mixed. Pour into muffin pan and bake for 1¼ hours. Makes 12-14 pupcakes. Check us out at www.nikenossecondchances.com

Success Stories The two success stories we would like to feature in this newsletter are PJ and Bachelor. Both dogs were found as strays, both intact males running the streets. What makes their stories so special is that these dogs went from homeless ragamuffins to loved and cherished family members. PJ was spotted by his new owner Mike in the last issue of the newsletter. Mike had one other male min-pin at home and was immediately interested in the little guy. PJ went home on Friday and was part of the family by Monday. While the adjustment process hasn t been completely easy, the two brothers are nearly inseparable. Bachelor is the dog that has so far best highlighted what makes our program different. This yellow lab was nearly wild when we caught him he didn t like being on a leash and had no manners. After rigorous training and socialization Bachelor has been selected to be the unofficial mascot of the Ritz-Carlton in Beaver Creek. His new owner works at the hotel and will bring Bachelor with him while he is working. He will be available to the guests for hikes, runs, or just general petting and lounging around. The difference for Bachelor that made this rags to riches story possible was the training and education NSC provided after he was found on the street. He is a very gentle loving dog that simply needed the time and effort to be shown what to do to be successful. His training process is almost complete, and when he heads to his new home at this five star hotel we are fully confident that he will become part of the package that makes the resort unique. As part of this year s Halloween Party there will be drawings for dog-related items. One of the items is a luxury dog bed (see photo below). If you would be interested in learning more, or would like tickets (a suggested donation of $2 per ticket) please contact Georgia or Ginger. All proceeds will benefit NSC. Canine Trivia In 1978 a law was enacted that made it mandatory for dog owners in New York City to clean up after their pets. Before then, approximately 40 million pounds of dog excrement were deposited on the streets every year. Contact Information c/o Clearwater Dog Training 5555 W. Adoptable Dogs These are some of the dogs currently in NSC s training process for adoption. If you are interested in meeting any of these fine pups please call Gina at 303-985-7775 to schedule an appointment. You may also email Ginger (ginger@ NikenosSecondChances.com). All adoptions through NSC come with four weeks of training to facilitate the transition into a new home. Please consider these dogs if you are thinking about getting a new family member. Lilly is an AKC registered Elkhound from champion show dog lines. She is about 40 lbs and is about 9 yrs old. This little girl is very quiet and gentle and needs a home that is away from the stress of the shelter. While she does okay around other dogs, it appears she would do best in a single dog household or as a companion to one. She is a smaller low maintenance dog and just wants someone to love. Farrah is a very silly looking dog! This poor kitty was rescued from the streets trying to nurse a litter of kittens (and starving herself in the process). She is in a foster home but is available for adoption for $60. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations and uses the litter box without a problem. We think she is under two years old and deserves a very nice home after her rough start on the streets. Robbie is a lab/collie mix. He is about 75lbs and 2 years old. Robbie bonds deeply with one person and would do best in a situation without children. The ideal home for Robbie would be one with a person that can provide Robbie a secure environment with discipline. Robbie is a strong headed dog that will take very well to a dominate personality. Ginger is a purebred Malinois. She was originally used as a guard dog, but with her sweet temperament, it s hard to believe she was ever very good at her job. She is an older gal just looking for a place to retire. She is good with other dogs and pretty mellow. The vet has given her a clean bill of health as well as a full dental. Honey is a very pretty dog and has found her way to NSC s because of an owner relinquishment. She is 3 years old and weighs around 50lbs. She can be shy when she first meets you, but she warms up quickly and then is just about the sweetest girl. Honey has lived with kids of all ages and she gets along with dogs of all sizes. She does have a tendency to escape, so will need a secure 6ft fence. 3 Check us out at www.nikenossecondchances.com
