SUGGESTED JUDGING TIPS FOR NEW ZEALAND S NOTES FOR PREJUDGING 1) Arrive at show venue at least 1/2 hour prior to judging. 2) Make yourself known to Sheep Marshall who will introduce you to the Steward of your section. 3) If there is an interbreed Championship for meat breeds e.g. Champion of Champion Ram/Ewe/Hogget class, take the time to have a quick look at the entries in the other meat breed hogget pens. A quick look at the standard of the opposition can be advantageous. 4) It is important to note that when selecting the Ram/Ewe entry to best represent the Hampshire Breed in an All Breeds Competition, that it is sometimes not necessarily the best Hampshire type animal, but the animal that stands out and has style without sacrificing greatly the classic modern Hampshire characteristics. 5) If classes are high in numbers, a notebook and pencil is helpful to jot down any points that you may like to remember. Even some coloured pegs can be useful for identifying animals. 6) The judge must never read ear tags, carry or refer to the catalogue. JUDGING 1) Walk along the pens of the class you are judging to to get an overall view of the entries making mental notes of your first impressions. 2) Get into each pen and check every entry in the class fora) TEETH should not be either under or overshot (scratchy) b) LEGS AND FEET should stand squarely and well balanced on all 4 legs. Should not be down on pasterns Should not be lame or sore c) SKIN COLOUR should be clean and as near to pink as possible. d) WOOL should be down type (fine, dense and springy), no black fibre or spots. However it is very important to NOTE with Hampshires as with other black faced breeds that any previous skin perforation or damage such as shearing cuts, vaccinations, sunburn, dermatitis and seeds etc.will temporarily cause black fibre growth. 374

However this is not usually permanent and a judge MUST be able to determine the difference between genetically based black fibre and black fibre induced by wounds (e.g. black fibre high on the neck and below the ears is more than likely the result of vaccinations and would be fair to be given the benefit of the doubt). e) SHOULDERS should be well set, tight fitting and not too wide at the brisket. f) NECK should be well placed and set in the shoulder and long enough so that when the head is held up the chin can be level with the back. g) MUSCLING is important in a meat breed sheep such as Hampshires so therefore the animal should be well muscled and filled in the hindquarters with a good wide and deep loin. h) HEAD should not be too woolly nor too bare. Good cover over the poll and a small amount on each side of the nose. i) NOSE should be dark brown to black, strong and can be slightly roman in shape. j) EARS should be thick and dark brown to black in colour with a slight flick up at the points. k) LENGTH should be of good length without sacrificing conformation. No dips or humps in the back. l) BACK should be straight from shoulder to tail. m)walking AND STYLE After the pen check, let each animal out and scrutinise its ability to walk squarely on its legs and carry itself with conformation and style. * It must be noted that there is no such thing as the perfect animal and that some judges will place more importance on some aspects of an animal than others (the choice of the judge on the day). * As long as the basic breed characteristics of the NZ Hampshire are maintained with importance being given to maintaing the slight edge that we have over other meat breeds in regard to muscle scanning and good bone structure, then progress must be being made. 3) Having completed all the above tasks, it is then the judge's decision as to whether a) he/she takes out their top pick (e.g. 4 or 5 in a big class, 2 or 3 in a small class) or - b) whether he/she works their way up from their bottom pick to the top pick (time in some cases will be a factor here) 4) Having selected the final pick of entries, it is a good idea to run them together in the race and if need be individually checking them again if notes have not been taken or the final decision is difficult. 5) Champions and reserve Champions to be selected from the winners of both the Male and Female sections. 6) Supreme Champion to be selected from either the Champion Ewe or Ram. 7) Explain your decisions to the Stewards. This is a great way to educate people about the Hampshire breed. 8) If there is a junior judge, encourage them to ask questions and offer an opinion, remembering that you have the final say. 375

Hampshire Appendix Section Category 1 - For Hampshire ewes that registration has not been kept up, but history and full pedigrees shows they are from registered stock. - Where these ewes, after inspection and having been mated with a Registered Hampshire Ram; those progeny are eligible for the Flock Book. Category 2 - When ewes or rams of another breed are mated to a registered Hampshire those female progeny are recorded as usual, but with a letter C on eartag after individual number. - When these C tag ewes are mated to a Registered Hampshire Ram their female progeny tag has the letter B after individual number. - The next female generation when mated to a Registered Hampshire Ram, females have the letter A after number. - The next female generation when mated to a Registered Hampshire Ram, be eligible for full registration in the Flock Book. Rams from this generation will be eligible for Registration. - The usual NZSBA rules will apply for all Appendix animals and the recording of those in the Members Flock. - The usual fees will also apply as for NZSBA. - All Appendix ewes to be recorded on NZSBA Annual Return. Base ewe flocks must be from registered purebred terminal sire. After 4 generations breed inspectors will inspect the graded up animals with their ewe lists records, before being admitted to their purebred flock 376
