I know it s cliche, but it seems that time goes by faster every year. It s been a very interesting summer for me. I ve had an exceptional number of interactions with people in the veterinary or animal related fields - even more than normal. What I know for sure, is that it is a small world, and an even smaller profession. I have a unique opportunity to be involved in building a specialty center with the support of a new employer. This gives me the opportunity to meet many veterinarians in all fields, and I am constantly amazed at who-knows-who. Have you ever played the game Six degrees of Kevin Bacon?? If not, be sure to Google it. It s based on the premise that if you start with the actor Kevin Bacon, you can relate any other actor or actress to his work, within six connections. I think veterinary medicine is the same; in fact, I used to refer to Six Degrees of Joanne Graham, referring to one of my mentors that seemed to somehow be connected to every Call for Nominations! Do you have a passion for advancement and strengthening of the Chicago area veterinary community? Have you envisioned the future of the CVMA? Could you see yourself being one of its leaders? President s Thoughts other veterinarian I knew. Try it with some of your colleaguessee how far you can get! It s been that kind of summer. I met veterinarians who worked where I used to work, or worked with someone I used to work with. Or, I worked this summer with a veterinarian who was a technician with me when I was pregnant with my daughter, who is now 10 years old. (It s all fun and games until you feel old!) We have a drug rep who met one of the surgeons I worked with, who knew the rep s uncle, who is another respected surgeon. I met with Steve Dale this summer, who seems to know everyone, or at least someone who knows someone. I went to a conference and ran into colleagues who I had not seen in years, and at the same conference, also ran into a fellow CVMA Board member: who knew we would both be there? I interviewed a veterinarian who is completing an internship where I was a technician and an intern in the 90 s wow, did we share stories! It is wonderful to know that there are only a few degrees of separation between colleagues. It s hard to think of a situation I would experience where I would not have colleagues to lean on, and for that, I m grateful. By being veterinarians, we can interact with so many other professions: drug reps, political and government reps (building out a new hospital is a story too long for this newsletter, as many of you know!), entertainers, law enforcement, pet friendly volunteers, and of course all of our clients from so many different backgrounds. We have an awesome profession, which is full of awesome people. The CVMA is made up of many of these individuals. I recommend reflecting on those around you and who knows who. It is very informative and allows you to learn so much. It is so important to take advantage of our profession that allows you encounter so many others. Remember to appreciate those around you! Opening Doors and Building Strategic Relationships Eric Voogd, Director of Public Education & Media Relations Who thought we would have already broken and set temperature records so quickly this summer? The Dog Days of Summer are upon us; however, so are the many possibilities for us to educate and connect with the public and share our passion for veterinary medicine. In the midst of these extreme weather conditions, veterinarians are diligently treating animals and warning the public about heat strokes, including a fellow CVMA member who appeared on ABC7 News shortly after the 4th of July holiday. Your steadfast commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of countless pets and educate their owners is to be commended during a crucial period, as the CVMA is opening doors and building strategic relationships. We are excited about the developing opportunities presented to the CVMA to work in innovative areas, including Sgt. Mark George with the Chicago Police Department and Dr. Donna Alexan- Cook County Animal and Rabies Control (CCARC), in our efforts to protect the public health, continues with our efforts to accomplish 100% compliance with owned animal rabies vaccine requirements as well as increased surveillance of wildlife rabies incidence. In order to increase owned animal rabies vaccine requirements, we continue our low cost rabies vaccine clinics two days a week in the summer months throughout the County. Our goal has been to provide our services to the areas with the greatest socio-economic need and where we receive the most dog bites from unvaccinated animals. We have been working with the DePaul University graduate GIS program to identify the areas of greatest need for our services. The charts provided demonstrate the economic breakdown of the County, der with Cook County Animal and Rabies Control. Additionally, Dr. Alexis Newman CVMA President and I had a meeting where we discussed a series of objectives, which will prepare the CVMA for a dynamic, new leadership role offering veterinary medicine expertise to key decision makers in government within Chicago and Cook County. We wish to thank all CVMA members who completed the membership survey in July and for their invaluable feedback. The findings of this membership survey will be presented during the general membership meeting in September. Soon, you will discover new sections on the CVMA and CVMF websites that offer helpful information and tools for you, the public and media. We encourage you to continue sharing your insights and thoughts with us at the office. State law, specifically 510 ILCS, requires we make provisions for low cost rabies vaccines and microchips and mandates that the maximum charge we can impose for a microchip to be $15. We do not give out any medical advice and specifically state the need for all participants to establish a doctor-patient -client relationship with a veterinarian as soon as possible for the health of their animal. We are accomplishing the goal of vaccinating approximately 4,000 animals per year that may not have received a rabies vaccine due to financial hardship thus protecting the public health against a major public health concern. Mark A. George, Chicago Police Department - Animal Crimes Team My name is Mark George and I am a Sergeant with the Chicago Police Department Animal Crimes Team. I am a 24-year veteran with 15 years of tactical and gang experience. For nearly four years, I have been assigned to the Animal Crimes Team. The Animal Crimes Team investigates hundreds of animal cruelty and dog fighting complaints annually, effecting more than 100 arrests each year. Prior to my assignment with the Animal Crimes Team, I was not unaware that 75 percent of these arrests involved active gang members, and that two-thirds of offenders have a history of domestic violence. The Animal Crimes Team serves as a unique tool to combat crimes related to these issues within our communities. One of the functions of the Animal Crimes Team is to conduct roll call training with Department members in order to address animal offenses and signs of abuse and other violence. For example, officers responding to a burglary assignment may encounter an animal that is caged, emaciated, or tethered to a radiator. This alone is a crime, but something else may be going on within the residence. If an animal is being treated inhu- Wings Support Group on Facebook! There have been instances when a veterinarian or animal clinic recognizes animal cruelty and is not sure what to do. Sometimes, no one knows what to do until it is too late. One example is when an animal is returned to an owner an offender who then leaves the facility. Dr. Phillips is interested in complicated soft tissue cases and urinary tract cases. She also performs oncologic surgeries and plans to offer tracheal and urethral stents this winter. Dr. Tisha Harper earned a veterinary degree at the University of the West Indies, where she also practiced and taught following graduation. She completed a master s degree and surgical residency at the Virginia- Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, gaining board certification and joining the faculty there in 2006. She arrived at Illinois in July and will focus on orthopedic cases. Her interests include total hip replacement, stifle and elbow diseases, arthroscopy and fracture repair. Dr. Harper also has a special interest in rehabilitation therapy. Dr. Devon Hague will see medical and surgical neurology cases at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She earned a veterinary degree at Ohio State University and completed a general internship in Connecticut followed by a neurology internship in the Dallas area. She joins us in August after finishing a three-year Dr. Michael McFadden officially joined our faculty last fall, but he had completed a three-year surgical residency and gained board certification here prior to working briefly at VCA Northview Veterinary Specialty Services in Pittsburgh. Dr. McFadden earned a master s degree in biology from Texas State University-San Marcos before, and completed a one-year internship at Louisiana State University after, earning his veterinary degree at Ross University. In addition to general orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries, his interests include minimally invasive surneurology residency at Bush Veterinary Neurology Service in Virginia. P A G E 10 The Rule of Thirds Peter Weber, ISVMA Executive Director As many people know, I am a professional photographer by avocation. My specialty is in photographing wildlife; in particular birds. One of the first things we are taught as photographers is the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as paintings, photographs and designs. The guideline suggests that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equallyspaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would. In Illinois, there is another important rule of thirds. That is the fact that 2/3 of the licensed veterinarians in the State practice in Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties. That is a reflection of the population density in those counties. It also means that a disproportionate number of State legislators come from this area. Legislative districts are established based upon representation of a roughly equal number of people per legislative district. That means the metropolitan Chicago area has roughly 2/3 of the legislative votes in the Illinois General Assembly and the rest of this massive state has approximately 1/3 of the state legislative power. The reality of Illinois politics is that you have to have a strong base in Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties to get anything done. ISVMA has outstanding lobbyists that represent the interests of ISVMA very persuasively and effectively. However, they will readily state that the outcome of any piece of legislation has more to do with local (grassroots) lobbying than any other single factor. If your legislator gets a few letters, visits or emails from constituents on an issue, they are much more receptive to voting our way. In the absence of grassroots communication and lobbying, there is likely an energized and well-funded organization representing a group of people who want to redefine Scope of Practice and diminish the role of v e t e r i n ar y pr o f e s s i o n a l s (veterinarians and CVTs) in the healthcare of animals. ISVMA battles these opposition groups every year on your behalf. But it is never more critical that our members join us in the battle than during years in which the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Practice Act (Practice Act) is due to sunset. This occurs every ten years. It gives opposition groups the opportunity to propose amendments to our Practice Act and convince legislators to threaten to let our Practice Act die if we do not agree to changes we oppose. Therefore, it is vitally important that we get veterinarians and veterinary technicians from Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties heavily involved in our grassroots legislative advocacy network. Get to know your new legislators after the November elections. Offer to provide them expert advice on animal health and welfare issues. They will gladly accept your input! ISVMA will help teach you how to become an effective part of our legislative advocacy program and we need you more now than ever before. Like the image in a photograph that has the appearance of moving from 1/3 of the frame into the remaining 2/3 of the frame by composition, we need to move our advocacy effort into the 2/3 of the State where the population density and legislative power resides.
