We had a few new or potentially new members show up, welcome to them. Thanks to David Kremers and Grady Nash, we did have a few birds to run some field exercises. Larry helped the new-comers with some heeling and we gave some introduction to pointing lessons. A couple of our chapter members are starting the fetch-lessons this spring, so that was given some attention. Let s hope that we are all thawed out by the next training day. Next month we will meet at the Long Pond site for our training. We are trying to obtain a few chukars &/or quail to have available for field work. As is typically the case early in the year, birds are not easy to obtain. If anyone can bring a few extra, please do. We ll try to advise everyone as to the status of the bird availability ahead of the date, if we can. As we begin our season, I would like to encourage all to get more involved with our training exercises. Too often we see the same members helping others out all day long and they never get their own dogs out of the box to get any training of their own done. NAVHDA is about teaching people to train their own dogs. However, so much can be learned in general about training, dog behavior and more, by helping others. We will again have a sign-up sheet to run in the field. When you sign up to run, consider yourself signed up to also help in the field (or other place) with other members. In addition, since there is usually a long wait to get into the field, we should also make every effort to break into smaller groups and work on other things than just waiting for a quick run across the field to shoot a bird. Much of what we expect a dog to do beyond Natural Ability level is grounded on obedience. We have a few chapter members who have been extremely involved in obedience classes and competitions (and successful at it). It is a great resource to capitalize on while we are waiting to run in the field. Ask Cheri, Jen or Pam about some tips for heeling exercises or sit-stays. Get together with others to run some retrieve by drag exercises. Pair up and work with a buddy on steadiness drills. When you do get that opportunity to run in the field, have a clear goal of what you want to work on and accomplish, and let those who are helping you know what that is. It is better to hit the field with one specific goal than to try and deal with the entire sequence all at once with only one or two birds.

POTENTIAL TRAINING SEMINAR: We have an opportunity to put together a hands-on Training Seminar involving a Professional Trainer / Field Trial Handler Daniel Burjan from Flemington, NJ. Daniel has a list of wins, national championships and accomplishments longer than we can possibly list in one spot. More information concerning Dan and his qualifications can be reviewed at his web-site www.burjankennels.com. Dave Kremers has been talking to Mr. Burjan about possibly coming up to put on a training clinic or seminar for our chapter. In addition, the Burjan s also run a traveling BBQ business. So, we may be able to put the two together for a combination package. We would like some feed-back from the chapter to determine if there is sufficient interest in making this event happen. Since we are hosting a Handler s Clinic this year in addition to our two tests, and if the sentiment is that we have enough going on for this training season we can at least consider it for next year. It is typically beneficial to get other training tactics or points of view to keep us all fresh on new training approaches and problem solving with our gun-dog training. Field trailers are by necessity death on steadiness and backing. Dan may have some innovative approaches to that training. Please fire back a note to let us know what the chapter s thoughts are about this opportunity. Memberships: Chapter Memberships for 2011 are still rolling in, but we are still missing several from our 2010 membership list. Please get those renewals in as soon as possible. We will be reviewing and updating the master list shortly and those not current may be dropped from the distribution list. You can obtain a membership form directly from our chapter website. PLEASE BE SURE TO PROVIDE AN UPDATED E-MAIL ADDRESS. Mail membership application and check to STNY-NAVHDA c/o Dick Mider at 456 Silk Street, Newark Valley, NY 13811. Please also be aware that each chapter member must also be a member of the International organization of NAVHDA. DATES also listed on our website (www.southerntier-navhda.org) Our 2011 Test Dates are as follows: Spring = May 21 & 22 Fall = September 24 & 25 Our Handler s Clinic is scheduled for June 25 & 26 Learn more about the NAVHDA testing system and how it is applied, learn how your dog is scored by the judges and how you can become a better handler of your dog during a test. We encourage all members to attend this event. Much worthwhile information will be shared. A memo and application form was circulated about this event; if anyone needs further information please contact Jen Patterson. Our regular Training Days, held at Long Pond Area are as follows: April 17th, May 15th, June 19th, July 17th, August 21nd, and September 18th. We start at the field at about 9 AM and move to the water site (Greene Rod & Gun Club) in the early afternoon. Contact us if anyone wants to host additional training days so we can get it on the calendar. Spring Test Entries: Our Test Secretary Dan Kremers has indicated there have been a few inquiries about our Spring Test. If ANYONE is interested in participating in our Spring Test, please let Dan know and get your applications in. This advanced notice will help us with the planning for the test and bird ordering. New members with puppies, if you are interested in trying a Natural Ability Test, please let us know. We can work with you on these next Training Days to help prepare you and your pup

Birds: An order has been placed for chukar and pheasant for our spring test. Tom Brougham has offered to make a duck-run in April, ahead of our training day, for a very large duck order. We are bringing in 60 ducks. All who indicated they wanted ducks will need to pick them up at Larry s when they arrive and pay Tom. An additional notice will be sent out ahead of time, but be prepared to take your ducks home. Chapter Apparel: We discussed a few options for shirts & hats and such at our business meeting, as noted in the previous newsletter. We did not get a chance to finalize any decisions at the March Training Day. We should try to finalize some plans at our next training day it would be good to have some products made up prior to the Spring Test and certainly before the Handler s Clinic. We may be able to sell a few items during those events. Tent: Our chapter tent is available for use by our chapter members for special occasions or functions; the rental of the tent to members is $100. Please refer to our web-site for info. The tent must be picked up at the storage location and returned clean and dry. Training Tips: The only way to train a bird dog is with the use of birds. For new members, finding and keeping birds is often a seemly overwhelming job. Where do you find and buy birds? How do you keep them at home? Where do you get the equipment? How do you transport them? The following is a couple of sources for supplies and equipment that have been used by our chapter members over the years. While we are not specifically endorsing any source, it is a starting point. Lion Country Supply (www.lcsupply.com) Foy s Pigeon Supply (www.foyspigeonsupplies.com) (A general web-search will turn up more sources than you can cover in a day.) We had always been concerned about keeping ducks, not having a readily available pond upon which we could build an enclosure. We found that a pressure treated wood-framed wire-mesh cage works well. We enclosed part of the top and sides at one end with corrugated tin roofing. The cage is supported off the ground on legs. The water supply is a garden hose with an automatic timer (from Lowe s, Home Depot or a garden center) running into a large rubber pan (from Tractor Supply). The timer is set to run water three or four times every 24 hours for 2 minutes. The ducks have a continuous supply of fresh, clean water and we kept a covered food trough filled and protected. Problem solved. Other Dog News: If anyone has any news or would like to make a submission for our newsletter, please forward them to our editor Jen Patterson.

Southern Tier of New York NAVHDA Chapter We were certified as Southern Tier of New York Chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) on January 18, 1985. NAVHDA is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote and improve the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America; to conserve game by using well trained, reliable dogs before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of curelty to animals by discouraging nonselective and uncontrolled breeding which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs. Many members have contributed to the success of this chapter and we thank them for their efforts. At the Southern Tier Chapter we strive to help members become confident, capable trainers with the goal of developing excellent versatile hunting dogs. We also emphasize fun, camaraderie and value the lasting friendships made along the way. NAVHDA Sponsors Above are several organizations that sponsor NAVHDA. We encourage you to support them whenever possible.
