HELOTES HUMANE SOCIETY A HOME FOR EVERY ONE SUMMER 2017 THE TAIL WAGGIN TIMES Director s corner Dear Friends, Volunteers and Members, It has officially been one year since we made the leap and moved into our new home on Shaenfield Rd. It has been an adjustment for us and I m sure for you too. The move has brought us many new clients. By that I mean many more found strays and people wanting assistance. We are now located in an unincorporated area of San Antonio with limited services for stray animals. With increased calls for help come increased needs for funding sources. Our recent shoe drive was an example. With your help we met and exceeded our goal! Our volunteers and staff did a great job with all of the sorting of the shoes. It was not an easy task! As a nonprofit, we must continually find new ways to raise funds and it can be challenging and honestly not always the most fun part of my job. But it is necessary and always on my mind. One way you can help is to renew your membership. Our membership renews each January and we are currently reworking our membership levels. If you are in doubt as to if your membership is current, please call our office at 210.422.6242 and we can look that information up for you. We also offer the convenience of an automatic bank draft. We d be happy to provide you with the proper form. Just stop by our office or shoot us an email at info@hhsanimals.org and ask for an ACH form. Your automatic monthly contribution (minimum amount is $10) helps us keep the lights on. Our next big fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct 7 th at the 4H Ag Activity Center in Helotes. A Night for Rescues will be a fun social night for anyone concerned with animal welfare in our community. A dinner, music, silent auction and raffle will be part of the night s entertainment. Early Bird tickets will go on sale in August. We hope you ll join us. I hope you all keep cool this summer and get to spend quality time doing the things you love best. Sincerely, Janice MacRossin Executive Director We are honored to be a part of the Combined Federal Campaign. SUMMER 2017 Tail Waggin Times Page 1

HAPPY TAILS Piper s Story Piper was found with her siblings and two other dogs dumped in a cage on the side of a rural road. Her new owners David & Denise Rottner had recently moved to Texas from Arizona and were looking for a pet to ease the difficult transition. They found Piper and fell in love. Denise is a Type 1 diabetic, and Piper has learned how to alert Denise when her blood sugar is low by gently nipping at her ear. Denise and Piper are inseparable. We enjoyed meeting many new friends at the Del Webb Yappy Hour on June 22nd. Former HHS alumnae Piper with her new parents. Congratulations Al & Mary Finch Honorary Members 2017 Al & Mary Finch were named Honorary Members of the Helotes Humane Society on Saturday June 3rd at our annual Volunteer appreciation event. The Finch s are only the second (& third) people ever honored in this manner. Al and Mary have saved the lives of hundreds of kitten by fostering them in their home until adopted. Many of these were bottle babies needing around the clock care. Al became known as the kitten whisperer and their resident as Finch s Finish School for Kittens. Photo by Kathy Yaccino Girls Scout Gold Star candidate Sara Nguyen planned and constructed a water feature for our dog park. It also includes two benches. She is pictured here with her parents and team members. Thank you Sara! The dogs will have a great way to cool off during the hot summer months. Our dog park is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. We are located at 10671 Shaenfield Rd. behind Second Chances Thrift Shop. SUMMER 2017 Tail Waggin Times Page 6
