The May trials are over for SDOC and RGKC, and SDOC handled all three in its usual fine style! I don t have all the results for this issue of the newsletter as I was unable to attend the trials this year. I have received some information and a number of photos which you will find here and elsewhere in the newsletter. Hopefully I ll be able to run more results and photos in the June issue. High in Trial and High Combined from Utility and Open went to Sandra Davis of El Paso, Texas. Sandra is a long time competitor in our area and familiar to nearly all of our local obedience folks. This May, Sandra won with her BC, Pixel who was also HIT on Sunday. ribbons for dogs from the Preferred classes in obedience and High in Trial for the Rally Trial. Dede Brownstein won both HIT and High Combined for Preferred with her Rottweiler, Elke who also won HIT and HC on Sunday. The Rally High in Trial went to Debra Lewis and her Cocker Spaniel, Reesha, who finished her RAE with scores of 200, 200, and 199 being HIT in Rally all three days. Those scores are very impressive! Oh, Reesha finished her OTCh last falll at our shows. That little Cocker seems to be pretty hot stuff! I believe that Maggie Gee and Solar were Preferred High Combined on Saturday. You may not have any ribbons to show for your efforts, but you have my undying thanks! From Estelle Mets, our hard working Chief Steward: Special thanks to all who stewarded long hours for three days running and kept our trials thoroughly professional and enjoyable for all the judges and exhibitors. My heart-felt thanks to all of you for spectacularly well run rings. On July 8, SWAT will hold an Agility Fun Match at the Sheriff s Posse Grounds. This is a great time to tune up for the September trial that will be held in the same place. There will even be a new Wall Jump available for practice since it is a new obstacle this year. There will be 2 rings which will be netted and gated so this will be a great place to practice your new dogs as well as the veterans. You may either run the marked course or practice whatever you feel necessary during your allotted time. Treats, toys, and training are allowed in the rings although treats may not be placed directly on an obstacle; they may be placed on a target at the end of the obstacle or held in your hand.. Special low entry fees will be offered for junior handlers (ages 9 to 18 years old). For entry forms and volunteer sign up sheets, see the SDOC website. In the US; AKC, ASCA, CPE, NADAC, TDAA, USDAA, UKI are organizations that offer organized agility events. Each of these organizations have a different set of rules to guide events. In New Mexico, AKC, ASCA, NADAC and USDAA are offered at various locations. Albuquerque offers more events per year than any location in the State. Obviously providing challenging courses to test team skills is required for the national organization to succeed and prosper. Local organizations like SDOC sponsor events providing location, equipment, judges and volunteers to conduct events. In return, the local organizations profit to help fund and maintain their organizations. REMINDER: Drills cost $10 per dog per session. The key to success for local organizations sponsoring events is the Volunteers. Albuquerque has a relatively small pool of volunteers to organize and conduct agility events. Consequently, at local agility event, the same volunteers are working. regardless of the event, the Volunteers contribute to the financial success of the sponsoring organizations. A positive side is that the local agility community is a close group that works will together. The community is necessary for agility to prosper in our area. Our clubs/ organizations need to promote and recognize the contribution of the local the agility community. This contributes to successful events, encourages participants to return, and tell their friends. One club s success is a success for all. The future success of agility in Albuquerque is to attract those agility gypsies. Our agility community are members of the gypsy band. When traveling, we want our locals to be advertising emissaries for Albuquerque Agility. For this to happen, our local community must be appreciated regardless of their personal agility preference. AGILITY is Agility is Agility is Agility no matter what the initials may be. All of them need our volunteer support! Skinny? Lean? Normal? Chubby? Obese? By Laurel E. Drew Which one of these is your dog? Do you know how to tell which is which? Why should you care? If you are an avid dog trainer and knowledgeable about your breed, you probably know what the proper weight and look for your dog should be; however, many of those beginning trainers in our classes aren t sure about proper weight and condition, and you might even need to take a look at your own dogs, especially the retired ones. If you are like me, I sit at my vet s office on occasion and wonder about the owners and dogs that I see coming in. I cringe when I see some of them, both dogs and people (and yes, I know I m not one to talk about overweight people), but I really am most concerned about the dogs. People know or should know about weight control, but the dogs don t, and the people are the ones feeding them. The AKC magazine, Family Dog, in its current issue has some excellent information on weight and weight control for dogs. It has an article on three morbidly obese dogs which lost unbelievable amounts and lived to tell the tales. In the most extreme case, a dachshund named Dennis lost nearly 50 lbs, down to 9 pounds (and looking good!) from 67.5 lbs. How did he do it: a strict diet and after he was able slowly extending exercise which started with simply normal amounts of food and a VERY brief amount of exercise. He now gets plenty of exercise running and playing with his ball and gets very few treats just a few times a week. His treats consist of carrots, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and his special summertime frozen banana slices. Dennis actually has a Facebook page, and you can find him on the Web under obese dogs. There have been a number of studies of dogs comparing those on controlled diets and those allowed anything they wanted. One study was aimed at the correlation between obesity and hip dysplasia. It was found that the obese ones had a much higher incidence of the condition than lean ones. They also discovered that the fat dogs lived an average of 11.2 years while the lean ones (equal in everything but calories consumed) lived an average of 13.2 years. Weight control added an average of 2 years to their lives. Hmmm. It is also scientifically known that fat dogs of all breeds have more strain on the joints leading to sore backs and legs (can we say shortened obedience careers?). Long backed dogs are more prone to herniated discs and can end up paralyzed. Theere is also a greater risk for heart disease and diabetes to say nothing of arthritis. Not what we want for our buddies! But how do you know what is normal or chubby or obese? There is a body-condition score that can be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to 9 (the latter setting up a closer standard). 1 is Emaciated, ribs and spine sticking out noticeably, face hollowed out, the whole dog in poor shape. These dogs often also have a dry poor hair coat and overall sad look. They need to see a vet to check for an underlying condition and help in gaining weight. 2 would be a dog that may be slightly underweight but in decent general condition with solid muscles and bright eyes. Some folks would consider this hunting or field condition healthy and without an extra ounce of fat on them. 3 is what can generally be consider normal condition, ribs and spine not showing be easily felt with an obvious waist as seen from top and a tuck-up in the abdomen. Well-muscled, shiny coat, and ready for action or the show ring. 4 score finds it hard to feel the ribs or spine. The waist tends to be pear-shaped instead of indented slightly, and there will be fat deposits in the abdomen and over the hind quarters. Cutting back on the treats and carefully measured cups of food should get this one in shape; that plus exercise! Lastly is 5, the truly obese dog. The Prez Sez By Betty Pearson Here we are.. I have no idea how we are in May and the Spring trial is right around the corner.. There will be three days of obedience and rally as well as four days of conformation going on over the weekend and first of the week the 12 th through the 16 th.. There are lots of brags from out members and I hope that they have made it into this issue. Sherry Avent and Misty earned a MACH and Clint Wolf and Kaia earned a PACH at the VVKC show. There were several others who had wonderful things happen during the month The weather should be getting warmer so be aware of things like leaving your dog in the car.. even for a brief while.. and be sure that you have water for them handy. Also be aware of exercising them in the heat better to do early or late in the day Hope to see you at the shows and good luck to all who are entered. Remember that you still have the best dog(s) ever no matter how they do on any day. Dogs not entered are not welcome due to AKC rules, unless there for a specific purpose like the testing which the Sporting Dog club sponsors. Treasurer: The March Profit and Loss and the Year-to-Date Profit and Loss reports were reviewed. The 2016 taxes have been filed. Corresponding Secretary: AKC invites us to participate in the selection of recipients for the Annual Lifetime Achievement Awards. AKC has processed the results of the agility events held March 17, 18, 19, 2017. The corresponding information for next year s event is also shown. Donna and Jerry Faulkner thank SDOC for the beautiful planter. The note will be posted on the bulletin board in the vestibule. President Betty Pearson has notified Bill s Lock and Key that the following three individuals are authorized to order and purchase keys on behalf of SDOC, including Do Not Duplicate Keys: Maggie Gee, Len Stans, John Clendenin. Then, Lowri s daughter earned her HT which finished her Register of Merit Versatility Gold title. What a spring! Clint Wolf has also had a busy spring with Skyler, Golden Retriever, earning her NADAC Chances title and Kaia Golden earning her AKC Master Jumpers Preferred 3 and her PACH titles. This is her 6 Agility Ch. Across 3 venues. Way to go you guys!!! Jinkle Seagrave announces that Tuvok earned his Beginner Heelwork to Music title at the Mile High Musical Tails World Freestyle competition plus earning 2 legs toward his Novice Heelwork to Music and, with Pam Jones and Cody (Toller) his Beginner Pairs Freestyle title. Also the team from SDOC, Jinkle and Tuvok, Pam and Sandy, Aadi Taute and BC Jinx, and Frances Cabeen with Aussie Cimra earned the Beginner Team Freestyle title. Cricket Mara and Smooch the Whippet has had a super April! On April 1 & 2, he battled snow, sleet and mud to finish his ASFA Lure Coursing Ch. At the local meet, Then, mid-month, he earned 5 points from a 1st place in coursing, a first place in his first obedience trial, and a 2nd place in his conformation class, and a CGC. Not stopping there, his earned 6 points toward his AKC Lure Ch. With a BOB and a Best In Field at the Lobo Lure Coursing Club meet. Wowsers! PLUS,, Smooch finished his Beginning Novice title at the SDOC trials this past weekend! Drew Continued from page 5 will have no discernable waist, a sagging belly, large fat deposits over the chest back and hindquarters and a distended appearing abdomen. Number 5 is in need of often literally life-saving dieting. OK, so your dog needs a diet. First consult your veterinarian. They can often refer you to Web information, can give you suggested amounts of food to give your dog, and can recommend appropriate amounts of exercise. Cut out those yummy treats and tidbits from the table. If you insist on giving food from the table, be sure to extract an equal amount of kibble from the bowl. Control portions. DO NOT FREE FEED. Replace the treats with such things as raw carrots, apple slices, cucumber, green beans, raw sweet potato slices, banana slices, and various bits of fruit and veggies. Remember, not grapes or raisins. I don t know, but cranberries may be ok, but not the dried sweetened kind. Remember that many dried fruits have sweeteners added so be aware of that. Peas can be handy for training treats as well, especially raw peas. They re good for us too! So, now you have a way to tell if your dog needs a diet and some ideas for how to do it. Just be sure to provide plenty of fun and exercise as well as your usual training. Go forth and preach to your neighbors and friends, and you are free to hand this article to them as well. The Ed., LD Donna Faulkner s Qwik, Papillon, finished his Rally Novice title at the SDOC trial this past Friday and got his first leg in Beginners Novice on Sunday! You go, Qwik!! The weekend of May 6/7, Pam Jones and Cody competed in NADAC agility and did great with 6 of 6 runs and titles in Novice Regular and Novice Chances classes!! Pam and Sandy and Cody also competed in the big Freestyle trial in Denver, and Sandy earned PDP legs 16 and 17 while Cody and Sandy also competed in and earned their Intermediate Brace title. For more of their brags, check Jinkle Seagrave s brag on page 8. What a weekend! Maggie Gee and Solar Golden Retriever earned legs 8 and 9 on their Preferred UDX.
