Shorewood Cocker Rescue 2018 Holiday Newsletter page 5 You Are What You Eat (And So Is Your Dog) I must confess that many times when I look at an adoption application, I am horrified by the food people are planning to feed. I know they are well meaning and really love their pets but they need to educate themselves. I have to admit that as a raw feeder I am a bit of a dog food snob. To me in a perfect world all dogs would be fed raw but since utopia is not just around the corner I will have to be satisfied with feeding our Shorewood dogs the best dry food available. Dogs are no longer considered carnivores. Over the years with constant diet changes they can now be considered omnivores. There are scientists that dispute this using the arguments that wolves also eat vegetation and they are obviously carnivores. One thing we can all agree on is that they are not herbivores. Now the problem is: How do I find a quality dog food? You need to get past the shiny foil and the pretty pictures and turn to the ingredients on the back of the bag. No less than the first two ingredients and preferably the third should be a source of animal protein. We do not want any mysterious sources of protein. If an ingredient is identified as a meat meal, what meal????? Is it chicken, beef, duck, turkey or another readily identified source. I guarantee if it is road kill or the product of the local renderer it will masquerade as animal meat. What about corn? We have been led to believe that it has no value, but the latest findings are not in agreement. It is a protein source, an energy source and a good source of Omega 6. It is cheap and that is why many low-end manufacturers use it. Corn has been reported to be an allergen, but science is not bearing it out. There have been cases of corn being infected with aflatoxins which can be fatal in a canine. Personally, if I found corn in the first three ingredients, I would put the bag back on the shelf. It may just be a personal thing, but I believe dogs are meat eaters so why take any risk? How about that other stuff? Did you wonder how you got those cute little shapes? You start with lumps of real meat and a lot of meal. This is where the potatoes, peas, vegetables, fruits and grains come in. The whole mess is cooked at high temperatures and then goes through a process called extruding. The food comes of out of molds and now you have all those little bones, stars, circles etc. Now how about things to avoid. Many cheap dog foods contain wheat middlings (also defined as floor sweepings). I think that is self-explanatory. The next are the food dyes (i.e. red dye #2, yellow dye #5 or #6 etc.) There is a plethora of numbered colors. They are suspected of causing cancer in humans so why would we feed them to our dogs? There are still dog foods that contain BHA and BHT as preservatives. They are known carcinogens. Choose dog foods that are preserved with tocopherols. Many low-quality foods contain meat and bone meal. Also, we find animal fat. In every case we want the animal or the meat named. Do not keep it a secret. The formulas always contain trace minerals and probiotics. They are a necessary part of the canine diet. Happy shopping. Another Way to Raise Funds As You Shop!
