Read the following texts 1. Living Things. Both animals and plants are living things because they are born, grow up, reproduce and die. All living things perform all of these functions. A tiger, a deer, a cypress and a flower are all living things.
Finally, there are three different groups that have to do with the way animals eat: -Carnivores: they eat meat and other animals. -Herbivores: they eat grass and plants. -Omnivores: They eat both meat and plants.
We classify animals according to three characteristics: 1.The Skeleton: vertebrates have a skeleton, but invertebrates do not have a skeleton. 2.The way animals are born: viviparous animals are born from their mother s womb, and oviparous animals are born from eggs. 3.The food they eat: some animals only eat plants (herbivores), others only eat meat (carnivores) and other animals eat both plants and meat (omnivores). ANAYA Basic Competences (Pages 18-23)*Sólo la parte de los animales
- Most mammals are viviparous, they are born from their mothers womb. All baby mammals drink their mother s milk until they can find their own food. - Mammals have (a protecting covering of) fur or hair. - They breathe (in oxygen from air)with (their) lungs. - They can walk and run, and some of them like dolphins can swim, even fly. - They can be carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Activities: 1)Look at the pictures and describe the mammals: This animal is an elephant. It has four legs and lives on land. It has hair.
2)What are the characteristics of mammals? Mammals have Mammals are 3)Which of these characteristics are unique to mammals? 4) Look at the pictures of animals. How do these animals move? Elephants walk. They use their legs. 5)Can you think of a mammal that uses two legs to move? 6)What kind of teeth do you think carnivores, herbivores and omnivores have? Why? 7)Which mammals live near to you?
-There are thousands of types of birds on Earth and they can be big or small, and they can be lots of different colours. -Birds are born from eggs, they lay eggs (oviparous). -All birds (are covered/have) feathers on their bodies. -They breathe (in oxygen from the air) with lungs. -They have wings, so that they can fly. -Birds are usually herbivores, but there are some that are omnivores. For example: seagulls, eagles, owls... This birds eats because it has a beak. This birds eats because it has a beak. This birds eats because it has a beak. This birds eats beak.
Activities 1)How are birds different from mammals? Birds are different from mammals because 2) True or false? Correct the ones that are false. a)birds are vertebrates. b)all birds are carnivores. c)not all birds have feathers and wings. d)all birds can fly. 3)Look at the photos of the birds beaks. Which birds eat these foods? How do you know this? Complete below the photos. Fish meat - nuts and seeds - nectar from flowers 4)Can you name three birds that can t fly?
- They are viviparous and they also lay eggs. - They live in freshwater or in sea water. - They have scales on their bodies. - They breathe (through their/with) gills. - Fish can be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. - Sharks, sardines and trout are all fish. - They are born from eggs and they lay eggs in water. -Baby amphibians live and grow in water and breathe through their gills. In a process called metamorphosis, baby amphibians change and grow into adult amphibians. Adult amphibians live in water and on land. They breathe with their lungs and absorb oxygen through their moist skin. -Most amphibians are carnivores. They eat invertebrates like insects and worms, and they sometimes eat small vertebrates, too. - Frogs and salamanders are amphibians.
-What are the characterisitcs of fish? Fish are Fish have Fish live in -What are the characterisitcs of amphibians? Amphibians are Amphibians live in Amphibians eat -Compare the characteristics of fish and amphibians. How are the same and how are different? Fish and amphibians are the same because Fish and amphibians are different because

Invertebrates are all around us! They live on land and in water. They walk, swim, crawl and fly. They can be big or smaill, but they all have one thing in common: they don t have a backbone. Many invertebrates have an exoskeleton or a shell to protect their body, but some invertebrates just have a soft body. Arthropods - Most of them are insects. - They are oviparous and they lay eggs. - Their bodies have three parts: head, thorax and abdomen. - They have six legs. - Some of them have wings. - All insects are arthropods. Mollusc - They have a soft body and/or a hardshell. - Some of them live on land and others live in water. - Octopi, crabs, snails and clams are molluscs. Worms - They have a thin, soft body with no legs. - They crawl. - Some worms live in water, and others live on land.
-What s the common characteristics of all invertebrates?
