Mini 4-H Animal Friends We are glad you decided to join Mini 4-H. Having a pet can be a lot of fun! In the eyes of your animal friend, you are the most important person in the world. Your pet counts on you for his food, water, exercise, health, safety and love. How does that make you feel? If you love and take care of your pet, you will have an animal friend for life. What a neat feeling! Here are some questions for you to answer about your Special Pet. Read the following questions very carefully. How many can you answer ''YES" to? Food Animals are like you. They like good, clean water and food. They also like to be fed every day. 1. Do you always remember to feed your pet? Yes No 2. Do you feed your pet at the same time each day? Yes No 3. Does your pet always have a clean food dish or pan? Yes No 4. Do you always have clean, fresh water for your pet? Yes No Exercise Animals like to run and play, so spend time with your pet! 1. Do you take time to play with your pet each day? Yes No 2. Do you enjoy playing with your pet? Yes No Animals are like people. They get sick too. Do you know the name given to an animal doctor? He or she is called a veterinarian. 1. If your pet should get sick or have an accident, do you know the name and number of your local veterinarian? Yes No Write your veterinarian's name and phone number here: NAME: PHONE NUBER:

Safety Our animal friends depend on us for their safety. Do you keep your pet on a leash, in a pen, a fenced yard or in a safe place? Yes No Love You know how it feels when your family loves you. You can give this same feeling to your animal friend. Sometimes you may have to correct him when he does something wrong. You do this because you love your pet. 1. Does your pet know you love him? Yes No 2. When your pet is bad, can you correct him without getting mad? Yes No

Let's learn about selecting a pet 1. There are many kinds of pets for you to choose from; you need to select the pet that will best fit in with you and your family. 2. If you live in a small house or apartment, you may decide a small pet will be best. Some nice small pets are cats, small dogs, birds, gerbils, fish, and turtles. 3. If you live in the country or on a farm, you could have a larger animal for a pet. You may decide to own a large dog, horse, goat or some other big pet. 4. It is easier to train a young pet than an older pet if you have patience and time. 5. If you get a pet and decide you do not want it, give it to a good friend or take it to an animal shelter for adoption. Unwanted pets should never be turned loose. They will not have anyone to take care of them. 6. You may buy a pet from breeders, dealers, pet shops or private owners. You may also adopt them from the Humane Society Animal Shelters. 7. Be sure your pet is healthy. Have it examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. A veterinarian is one of your animal's best friends. Exhibit You will exhibit the following and should participate in the Mini 4-H Pet Parade. ***If your pet is a large animal, such as a cow, a horse, pig, sheep or goat, then you will exhibit a 14" x 22" stiff backed horizontal poster. 1. Have someone in your family take two photographs of you with your pet. A. One picture should show you having fun with your pet. B. The other picture should show you taking care of your pet (feeding, grooming, training. etc.) Place photographs on the left hand side of your poster. (See Diagram on the next page) 2. Label or title your poster NEATLY across the top with "MY ANIMAL FRIEND". To make sure your lettering is straight, you might use a ruler and draw the lines with pencil. 3. Complete the record sheet on the next page NEATLY and attach it to the right hand side of your poster. (See Diagram on the next page)

You should participate in the Mini 4-H Pet Parade showing your animal at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair. Check your Fairbook for exact date, time and location. Mini 4-H Pet Parade Agenda 1.
