Reclaimed bricks frm the Victrian lean-t extensin that 'belnged' with the cttage and were reused in the new kitchen/diner. The flr is plished cncrete which cnnects it visually the riginal flagstnes in the ld cttage and the silvered Larch n the deck. The drs were salvaged frm the riginal huse and had been wallpapered and cvered ver with hardbard in the 60s. The under stairs cupbard was discvered under years f wallpaper and its riginal elm dr was eerily barded up. The later circa. 20th additins, such as the vestibule, cupbards either side f the fireplace and Bakelite dr handles were all retained as they evked the different eras and wnership f the cttage. The flagstnes were discvered almst cmpletely intact under a later cncrete tpping and are a rare survival f an 18th Century riginal flr. There used t be 7 drs frm the frnt dr t the back garden and ne small windw. The drs and walls were remved in the centre f the cttage in rder t imprve the flw, allw light t fld in frm the suth facing garden and als take advantage f the view ver the viaduct. Nw when yu arrive at the frnt dr yu can see right thrugh t the back garden and lush valley beynd cnnecting the cttage with its unique landscape. Upstairs the ceilings were raised in rder t prvide a new structural flr fr the attic and the riginal elm jists were retained as a memry f the riginal ceiling. The ak and elm flrbards were retained, cleaned and iled and a piece f riginal lime plaster was retained in the ffice. Elsewhere the walls were replastered with lime with a hemp binder that shuld benefit the thermal envelpe f the building. Where pssible riginal materials were salvage and reused such as the ld wrkshp sink which nw graces the master bathrm, giving the cttage integrity while reducing cnstructin waste and minimizing the prjects carbn ft print. Externally the walls were repinted in lime and large unsympathetic PVC windws were replaced with smaller duble glazed wd windws matched t an riginal windw fund t the rear f 134.
