COMPONENTS OF A TRANSMISSION ROLLER CHAIN Bush Roller Inner Plte Roller Dimeter Outer Link Connecting Link Inner Width Inner Link Pitch Pin Outer Plte SEDIS chins, both stndrd nd non-stndrd, re mde of: High qulity steels: dimensions nd dpted chemicl composition for the different chin prts The most efficient mnufcturing processes: - Specil technique for the production of bushes improving the chin wer resistnce (SEDIS know-how) - Pltes produced by multi-stge processing tools ensuring regulr pitch (SEDIS technology) Adequte mechnicl nd het tretments of chin prts: - Shot peening - Surfce finishing - Cse hrdening, crbonitriding, quenching, tempering... - DELTA tretment - Freezing tretment - Corrosion protection cotings (GEOMET, zinc, nickel plting,...) SEDIS is certified ISO 9001 since 1989: - First chin mnufcturer in the world to be certified ISO 9001 - Eleventh French compny to be certified ISO 9001 ISO 9001 version 2008 A sign of trust for our customers 2

- GENERAL DESIGN OF THE INSTALLATION 1.1 - TRANSMISSION The centerline of the sprockets O1O2 should be horizontl or hve smll inclintion to the horizontl. Where the ngle of inclintion exceeds 60, nd where verticl drive cnnot be voided, precutions must be tken to ensure proper chin-to-sprocket gering on the power sprocket: The tensioned strnd of the chin should preferbly be on the top The number of sprocket teeth should be selected from the stndrd rnge whenever possible (preferbly odd number). The norml trnsmission rtio must not exceed 1/8. Allow for two chin drives in series for higher rtios. It is preferble if the number of sprocket teeth nd the number of links re prime numbers. Provide shft center djustment to ensure tht the slck section of the chin is round 1% of the drive centers, provide further 3% djustment to compenste for chin wer. Tension : initilly, the chin will not require ny tensioning. But, in certin pplictions: reciproction drive direction, frequent stop/strt opertions... it is necessry to hve tensioning force on the slck strnd tht does not exceed 10% of the driving force on the tight strnd or 1% of the miniml breking lod of the chin. This cn be utomticlly djusted or periodiclly regulted mnully. When either the motor torque or the driven mchine loding re irregulr, in ddition to providing tensioning device on the slck strnd, it my be necessry to mount guiding device on the tight strnd to control vibrtion. 1.2 - LIFTING WITH LEAF CHAINS In cse where two or more chins work in prllel, the forces should be well distributed between them, generlly by using djustble fixing clevises to compenste for the dispersion of chin length nd the other tolernces in the instlltion. All the fixing devices (clevises, pins, compenstor, etc.) must hve strength t lest equl to tht of the chin. It is preferble tht the liner speed of the chin is less thn 0,5 m/s. The dimensions of the reversing rollers should stisfy the stndrd ISO 4347 giving some precise detils such s: the dimeter of the minimum support Df > 5 p. Europen regultions do however mke it possible to reduce the dimeter to 3 times the pitch, but by risking quicker wer of the chin nd the roller/wheel. The hrdness of the roller/wheel should be ble to resist wer cused by pivoting under the lod of the chin pltes t the moment of its rrivl on the roller nd when it leves. As guide, the hrdness should be somewhere between 300 et 400 HB. Using roller chins in lifting, plese consult us. It is to be noted however, tht in the mjority of cses mtched chins should be plnned for. 3

- DRIVE ACCURACY 2.1 - TRANSMISSION Defects in shft prllelism should be less thn 40 for simplex chin nd 20 for multiple row chin. Defects in lignment must be less thn 0,2% out of line of the shft centers. This limit flls to 0,1% for rpid trnsmissions. If it is impossible to void trnsverse shft movement, the sprockets must be ligned in medin position. Sprocket lignment is especilly importnt for multiple strnd chins, becuse of their reduced trnsverse flexibility. α = 40 for simplex chin α = 20 for multiplex chin prllelism tolernce lignment tolernce The consequences of geometry defects re: A noisy nd vibrting trnsmission A side wering of the sprocket teeth nd/or the chin inner pltes Stresses which my led to the complete destruction of the chin Improper distribution of the forces on the chin pltes when resistnce nd prticulrly ftigue limit cn be considerbly reduced Sprocket teeth concentricity nd runout tolernces lies within limits lid down by the stndrd ISO 606 nd should not be ltered by ssembly (for exmple when keying sprocket to shft). The rigidity of ssembly should be such tht sprockets lignment nd shft prllelism re not ffected by driving forces of the chin when operting. 2.1 - LEAF CHAINS Defects in the lignment nd prllelism of fixings nd counter motion pprtus should be reduced s much s possible. 4

- LUBRICATION 3.1- THE AIM OF LUBRICATION To introduce lubricting fluid between contcting surfces (pin/bush, pin/plte, bush/roller, inner linkplte/outer linkplte, etc.) to reduce wer nd to void joint seizure. To protect the chin ginst corrosion. To reduce noise by introducing the lubricnt between surfces subject to shock loding. To evcute het, generlly cused by friction between components. 3.2 - FACTORY PRE-LUBRIFICATION ALLOWS : The chin to be protected ginst corrosion until it is instlled by the user, provided it is not exposed to the elements. Prelubriction remins effective six months for chins stored under shelter. It should be complemented with lubriction by the user s mintennce deprtment s soon s the drive is strted up. Note pre-lubriction is comptible with ll minerl oils. We re ble to propose suited lubrictions depending on your specific constrints. 3.2- LUBRICATION METHOD This should be chosen ccording to the criteri nd chrcteristics of the instlltion, depending on its use. There re 3 min wys: MANUAL LUBRICATION (by brush, oil cn, etc...) CONTINUOUS DRIP FEED LUBRICATION CHAIN PASSING THROUGH AN OIL TANK In trnsmission, ny of these methods cn be used, lthough the choice depends on the type nd speed of the chin. When lifting, mnul or continuous drip lubriction is usully employed, lthough utomtic brushes cn eqully be used. 3.3- FREQUENCY OF LUBRICATION Quntity nd frequency of lubriction should be estblished with cre nd ccording to the specifictions of lubriction devices mnufcturers. 3.4- WHERE TO LUBRICATE? Longitudinlly: in n re where the chin lod is low in order to help the lubricnt penetrtion ( & b: recommnded res) Trnsverslly: between the pltes to feed the lubricnt towrds the joints nd between the inner pltes, the rollers nd the wheels. b 3.5- WHAT LUBRCICANT TO CHOOSE? Lubricnt must be suitble to operting conditions. In generl good qulity clen minerl oil, free from detergent is suitble. Its viscosity must suit the mbient temperture shown in the tble herefter: Recommnded viscosity depending on operting temperture Operting temperture ( C) Recommnded viscosity (ISO VG) -15 to 0 C 15 to 32 0 to 50 C 46 to 150 50 to 80 C 220 to 320 The opertor must chieve compromise between low viscosity lubricnt which would centrifuge off the chin without properly lubricting it, nd substnce with too high viscosity, which would prevent the lubricnt reching contcting surfces. For specil cses, nd in prticulr where lubriction is impossible, plese contct us. UNLESS RECOMMENDED BY US, THE USE OF GREASE IS COMPLETELY PROHIBITED. 5

- PRODUCT IMPLEMENTATION SAFETY 4.1 - STORAGE, HANDLING The storge of products before their instlltion should be such tht their initil qulity is retined. The following rules must be obeyed: Keep products wy from dmp, corrosive or dusty tmosphere or where they my come into contct with hrmful chemicls Protect ginst mechnicl dmges or ccidents Do not exceed the stipulted storge period suitble with the originl fctory lubriction (red 3.2) The product should be hndled with cre, nd opertors should be dvised on how to void its deteriortion. In prticulr, shocks nd forces pplied perpendiculr to the linkpltes cn cuse kinks in the chin. 4.2 - ASSEMBLY Before using the chin, it must be ensured tht the qulity of the instlltion conforms to dvice given here bove (red 1 generl design of the instlltion). When ll the checks hve been mde, djust chin length. When ssembling, the following sfety rules should be obeyed: Wer sfety glsses, sfety gloves nd sfety shoes. motor fuses, clmp motor strters of I.C. engines etc., to ensure no ccidentl premture strt up. Use suitble, good qulity tools. In ddition, the following rules pply to ll chin drive instlltions: Tke cre when unrolling the chin, not to twist it. Chin must be properly hndled to protect the chin itself or some of its components from dmge. Trnsverse forces during ssembly must be controlled by guides to void deforming the chin. Plce the connecting link on the slck strnd nd tke notice to fit it the right wy. Do not fit new links into worn chin or new chin onto worn sprockets. When link is dmged, replce it completely, nd not just the dmged prt. Chnge ny link which my hve been ccidentlly heted by blow lmp or torch ner the chin. 4.3 - OPERATION Before strting-up : Check the connecting link ssembly, the fitting of spring clips with the closed end pointing in the direction of chin trvel, tht nuts re properly tightened nd tht there re no tight joints. Check the bsence of nuts, tools nd spnners on the chin or trpped in the instlltion. Upon strting-up : Strt off slowly nd grdully, keeping close wtch during the first revolution or first cycle of the process Run the drive under light lod or none t ll for while. Check the complete drive fter few hours or dys of use. Check tht the forces on the chin re like those in the clcultion used for the chin selection. The stte nd position of the lubricnt nozzles should be checked. The color nd degree of lubricnt contmintion enbles the efficiency of the lubricnt to be mesured, nd lso whether it is sufficient nd when it should be renewed. If this is the cse, pply once gin or empty the instlltion using lubricnt of the sme qulity or superior qulity. First it is necessry to get rid of the lubricnt nd clen the chin in order to get rid of deposits of dirty oil which could prevent the lubricnt from penetrting the contcting surfces (between the pltes). 6

- MAINTENANCE In well ssembled construction tht is correctly lubricted, mintennce is restricted to ensuring tht the whole ssembly nd lubriction methods remin stisfctory. Periodiclly check : The instlltion geometry, nd prticulrly the sprocket lignment nd tooth wer The stte of the chin, prticulrly to detect trces of rubbing indicting geometricl filure or ccidentl structurl contct nd to ssess the mount of wer: Wer of the chin rticultions is mesured directly by its length (using mesuring instrument or control ruler), either by pprecition or mesurement of its slck or moving the tensioning device. Wer of the linkpltes of lef chins BUSH PIN ROLLER If necessry, find out the cuse of wer nd rectify it. If it is necessry to chnge sprocket or chin due to excessive wer (more thn 2% for the length of chin, or more thn 5% for the height of the plte), then it is better to chnge both the chin nd sprocket or rollers t the sme time. WARNING! Given the high resistnce of its components, the chin is susceptible to being wekened by hydrogen. Oxidising nd corrosive environments must therefore be voided. An cidic environment is lso to be voided t ll costs. The most stringent precutions should be tken when removing grese from the chin. All superficil tretments to the chin, nd in prticulr electrolytic tretents, re to be voided. For these types of environments, consult us for n eventul solution.. 7

- CHAIN LENGTH ADJUSTMENT If the instlltion does not involve djusting the shft center of the slck section, chin djustment should be crried out either t the beginning, or fter norml wer hs occured. CHAINS WITH AN EVEN NUMBER OF PITCHES SHORTENING BY ONE PITCH Chins up to nd including 25,4 mm pitch: First remove four pitches of chin from one end, tht is two inners nd two outers by extrcting outer link A (Fig.). Then fit double offset link N 221, spring clip connecting link N 206 or riveting outer link N 205 (Fig.b). Chins with pitch of 31,75 mm or bove: First remove two pitches of chin from one end, tht is one inner nd one outer link by extrcting the outer link A (Fig.c). Then fit single offset link (Fig.d). Extrct Extrct c b riveted outer link N 205 or spring clip connecting link N 206 Double crnk link N 221 d Single crnk link SHORTENING BY TWO PITCHES two pitches from one end, tht is n inner nd outer link by extrcting the outer link A.
