What about Hill and Upland ewes flocks??

FARM: T & JW RENNER, Yetlington, Northumberland Blackface ewes ON-FARM (FARMER S OWN) TRIAL Crystalyx EHE fed 3 weeks before tups turned in Scanning data: lambing % (2016) 283 ewes % of ewes (No CLX) (2017) 276 ewes % of ewes (+ CLX) 12% more lambs, much reduced empties, no increase in triplets!

FIRST MONTH OF PREGNANCY

PLACENTAL DEVELOPMENT Effect of severe underfeeding in midpregnancy (months 2 & 3) Scottish Blackface ewes M 0.5M Liveweight change +4% -14% Condition score (60d) Litter size % lambs 48h h 10% 70% Poor placental development & low birthweight.

Placenta size doesn t just dictate lamb birthweight. It also determines milking ability and lamb growth rates!

Udder Development SHEEP 95-98% mammary development pre-lambing EWE LAMBS reduced placenta size can decrease secretory cell number/multiplication (hyperplasia) and their ability to produce milk (hypertrophy) MATURE EWES secretory cells are already there but placenta size determines their secretory (milk production) capability (hypertrophy). Placenta size determines lactation performance!

Cobalt Deficiency in Ewes TYPICAL SYMPTOMS Appetite loss & general ill thrift Deficient ewes less likely to carry to full term higher risk of stillbirth Lambs from deficient ewes: are less vigorous have a lower immune status more prone to infection & disease

Sub-Clinical Cobalt Deficiency in Ewes Blackface X Swaledale Ewes 3 treatment groups: A: cobalt deficient throughout pregnancy (-) B: cobalt deficient for 1 st half of pregnancy but repleted from mid-term (-\+) C: cobalt sufficient throughout pregnancy (+)

Sub-Clinical Cobalt Deficiency in Ewes EFFECTS ON LAMB VIGOUR Time (in minutes) from birth to: Treatment A (-) B (-\+) C (+) Standing Finding udder Suckling g/day of EHE Crystalyx will prevent cobalt def.

Feeding in Mid-Pregnancy Try to maintain ewe body condition (but don t let ewes get too fat) (or too thin) Monitor grass availability: (Crystalyx intakes can be used as a guide) Feed supplementary forage if grass availability gets too low (ideally keep hay dry to reduce waste).

Ewe Condition Score (1-5 scale) Control Breeding Ewe Trial 1 Crystalyx At joining (tups in) mid pregnancy (3 mo) CS change

REMEMBER! Undernutrition pre-tupping and through the mating period WILL reduce ovulation rate and subsequent lamb crop Undernutrition in early-mid pregnancy WILL compromise placental development leading to low lamb birthweights and poor lactation performance - and poor lamb viability if ewe is cobalt deficient None of which can be rectified or corrected by late pregnancy feeding

PRE-CALVER IMPROVING DRY COW MANAGEMENT AND FERTILITY.

MILK FEVER: the Gateway Disease Average 7-8% occurrence of clinical cases in UK (individual farms can be significantly higher - especially when calving at grass)(nadis) More common in older cows (4 th lactation +) Occurs in both dairy and beef cows (esp. beef X) More common in autumn calving cows Cows which have had milk fever have a reduced immunity and are more susceptible to a range of other conditions: The Gateway Disease

HYPOCALCAEMIA IN DAIRY COWS (DairyNZ data, Tech Series, June 2015) For every 2% of downer cows (visual cases) a further 5% have clinical milk fever from blood analysis (but don t become downer ) and a further 33% of cows are subclinically affected Every 2% visual cases means up to 40% of the herd affected by milk fever

Grass Staggers Could be an issue this autumn with the lush grass growth we are seeing after recent rain. NADIS data

WHAT IS IT? GRASS STAGGERS (TETANY) Low blood Mg levels leading to nervous signs Annual rate <1% in UK dairy cows but 1/3 of affected cows will die CLINICAL SYMPTOMS: Sudden death ( tip of the iceberg )(initial signs -> death = 4h) WHY DOES IT OCCUR? There are no hormonal mechanisms to regulate blood Mg levels (unlike Ca) Blood Mg level is entirely dependent on short-term (daily) absorption from the diet Efficiency of Mg absorption in cattle is poor and declines with age

GRASS STAGGERS (TETANY) Magnesium requirements Maintenance (600kg) Pregnancy Milk M + 20 litres 15kg DM grass 10.6g/day 3.6g/day 0.74g/litre 25.4g Mg 18.0g Mg Shortfall 7.4g Suckler (750kg) 13.2g 2.7 (/kg LWG) 0.74g/l (M+9@1kg/d) 22.6g Mg 16.2g(13.5 DM) 6.4g The shortfall takes no account of the reduced Mg availability in lush young grass.

QUESTIONS?? QUESTIONS?? There is no better supplement to maximise animal performance, health and fertility! Thank You!

Easy Breather: a reminder!

The Immune System A newborn calf (or lamb) has no inborn natural immunity to disease Its own immune system has to develop from scratch after birth: this takes several weeks to fully develop The calf relies solely on the protection of the antibodies it obtains from its mothers colostrum to fight any pathogenic challenge.

Respiratory Problems Most respiratory problems occur with: Bought-in calves Bucket reared calves Autumn housed, spring-born suckled calves Stress also reduces an animals immunity: Transportation / Weaning Regrouping / Competition Dehorning / Castration A reduced immunity increases the risk of disease.

EASY BREATHER CONTAINS POWERFUL ACTIVE NATURAL DECONGESTANTS Keeps airways clear Reduces coughing and irritation Reduces stress Allows the calf to relax and use its own immune system to fight off the challenge.

EASY BREATHER Formulated for free-access feeding Typically fed from 4-5 weeks of age e.g. when calves first put into group pens Intakes will vary with age & level of other feeds fed: (lower when other feeds fed ad lib) age (weeks) intake (g/calf/day) < A 4x 5kg box will last 10 calves for 12 weeks

EASY BREATHER: FARM TRIAL POLAND Prof. Z M Kowalski Site: Butor Fleszar Dairy Farm The farm has approx 400 Holstein dairy cows averaging 11,000 litres milk Calves are housed in a special calf unit in small groups Calf milk replacer fed from day 8 Starter feed day 5 (fed ad lib) Hay available from day 10.

EASY BREATHER: FARM TRIALS RUSSIA Calves reared under identical conditions in the same building, in adjacent pens All calves fed the same feeds The only difference is that one group was offered Calflyx Easy Breather on a self-help basis in addition to the other feeds
