7 Chapter Introduction The TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM is a free-standing evaluation module that acts as a bridge between a PC or Macintosh 9 bus and an ATA/ATAPI device. It is used to evaluate system compatibility, to develop optional software that resides in external memory for StorageLynx, and to develop device drivers. It also provides a TSBAA9 hardware reference design for connection to an ATA/ATAPI device such as a hard disk drive (HDD), ZIP drive, Magneto-Optical drive (MO), ORB, CD-ROM, CD-R/W, DVD-ROM, and DVD- RAM. -

Two 9 ports are supplied. These are controlled by a Port PHY (TSBAB). StorageLynx (TSBAA9): The StorageLynx functions as a bridge (command translation) between the ATA/ATAPI drive and the PC/Macintosh. ATA/ATAPI 0 Pin Connector: Adapters may be used for pin connections. Flash Memory: 8K x 8 bit, access times may vary Note: Flash memory will only work correctly in 0 MHz mode with 60 ns, or faster, access time parts. Serial EEPROM: K 80 ICE Interface. The EVM contains a socket for connection to an external 80 emulator board. The 80 ICE is used to access TSBAA9 -

13 Hardware Overview internal memory and configuration registers while the embedded 80 processor is disabled. This capability is not normally used, but is available for testing and debugging purposes. External Power Input. The EVM has a connection for a V external power supply. This is used when the 9 connection cannot provide power to the EVM. Figure. Component Layout Diagram of the StorageLynx EVM Wall XFMR #,#,# LEDS #,#8 0. 14 StorageLynx EVM Hardware Installation. StorageLynx EVM Hardware Installation The following parts/devices are needed to set up the EVM: 9 cable ATA/ATAPI device (HDD, etc.) ATA/66 ribbon cable PC power supply for ATA/ATAPI device PC/Macintosh with 9 connection (PC with Windows 98SE is necessary for the programming application) To set up the EVM, perform the following steps: ) Ensure the ATA/ATAPI device power supply is off. ) Connect the ribbon cable between the EVM board and the ATA/ATAPI device. ) Connect the ATA/ATAPI device to the power supply. ) Configure the StorageLynx EVM switch settings as shown in Figure. Mode will be used for most development applications. ) Turn on the ATA/ATAPI device power supply. 6) Connect the 9 cable between the EVM and the PC/Macintosh. The PC/Macintosh can be running. -

17 Chapter TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM Programming Application This chapter contains an overview and installation instructions for the Storage- Lynx EVM programming application Topic Page. StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Overview StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Installation TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM Programming Application -

18 StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Overview. StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Overview The StorageLynx EVM bundle contains the following software files: SLynxVC.exe. StorageLynx programming application executable file. Support files: SEQFWAPI.reg. Registration file for registry edits. SEQFWAPI.sys. WAPI9.dll. Sbplynx.hex. Flash memory software. Intel Hex file format output by most 80 compilers. TI_HDD.eep. Config ROM file for HDD, ZIP, MO, and ORB devices. TI_CD.eep. Config ROM file for CD ROM, CD R/W, DVD ROM, and DVD RAM devices. The EVM programming application software is used to download code to the flash memory or the EEPROM on the EVM to allow normal or developmental use of the ATA/ATAPI device attached to the EVM. The SLynxVC program can load a configuration ROM file into the serial EEPROM or program code (firmware) into flash memory. When the software is loaded, a message appears on the computer screen that Flash or EEPROM reprogramming has been completed. The ATA/ATAPI device connected to the EVM is then available for normal use or, in the case of custom software, the ATA/ATAPI device can be tested to ensure proper operation. Custom software may be loaded to the flash or EEPROM using SLynxVC. Example firmware code, with licensing restrictions, is available from Texas Instruments for use in custom software development. The following general guidelines should be followed for developing custom.eep files: Configuration ROM files must be in the same format as the included Config ROM file (TI_HDD.eep). Comments are allowed, but must be preceded by //. The first line in the file must be a header, because the application calculates cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs) and places them in the proper locations. CRC values are all F in the.eep files. The first number in the header is the number of blocks after the BUS_INFO_BLOCK (in TI_HDD.eep this is ROOT DIRECTORY, UNIT DIRECTORY, AND TEXT LEAVES). The next numbers are the offsets of each block from 0x00. -

19 StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Installation. StorageLynx EVM Programming Application Installation Note: Included software will run only under Windows 98SE. There is currently no automatic install utility included with the EVM. To install the software on the PC, perform the following: Copy WAPI9.dll to c:\windows\system. Copy SEQFWAPI.sys to c:\windows\system\drivers. Create a folder for all other EVM files and copy the rest of the files to that folder. Execute SEQFWAPI.reg by double clicking on the file. Reboot the PC. TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM Programming Application -

21 Chapter Programming the TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM This chapter explains how to run the StorageLynx EVM programming application. The StorageLynx EVM programming application can only be run after the EVM hardware and software are successfully installed. See Section. for hardware installation instructions and Section. for software installation instructions. To run the EVM programming application, do the following: ) Execute SLynxVC.exe. ) Under File, select Device. ) Choose the appropriate device from the list (can vary as the Config ROM is altered), and choose OK. ) Under File, select Open. ) Choose the appropriate.hex file or.eep file for the ATA/ATAPI device connected, and select Open. Note: A message that the file chosen is being processed should appear in the window. 6) Under Options, choose Program Flash or Program EEPROM. Figure shows an example of successfully-loaded software. The ATA/ATAPI device is now ready for use in StorageLynx EVM switch setting Mode 0 to run from the internal program, or in StorageLynx EVM switch setting Mode to run from the program in the Flash memory. 7) Reset StorageLynx by unplugging and replugging the 9 cable. Note: The Flash memory can only be programmed in Mode on the EVM, but the serial EEPROM can be programmed in either Mode 0 or Mode. Programming the TSBAA9 (StorageLynx) EVM -
