1 OUR TEAM MARY WALTERS ( ) MORGAN RICHARDS FARM Sanatorium Road Cardiff CF11 8DG Webpage: JUNE 2015 FARM NEWSLETTER.Welcome to flaming June! I hope you have managed to do your first cut at the right time and second cut in some cases! At the end of April the Vet from Boerhinger Pharmaceutical Company came to educate us about the new BVD Vaccine Bovela. It is truly cutting edge technology, Andy reports later. On 19 th May we took a bus full of our sheep clients to the NSA Event at Newtown, Mid Wales. The weather was a little bit hit and miss but didn t stop us enjoying an excellent event. Everyone learnt something new and picked up a few useful tips. Our thanks to the Pharmaceutical companies Norbrook and Elanco who helped us fund the event. Our Next Cattle Academy meeting is on 2 nd June with Sara Pederson. Sara is continuing her Beef Fertility Series with an evening on Infectious Diseases. This meeting is also opened up to our dairy clients. GAVIN DRONEY On 2 nd June, Sara Pederson visited us for the last in the Cattle Academy Beef Fertility Series, with a talk on infectious diseases. The take home message was definitely to establish your disease status know where you are and then we can decide what to do. ANDY WALES Sara has agreed to do a talk on Sheep Nutrition next a talk aimed at any level of knowledge! Mary NFU Community Champion Award Won by Vale Farmer Everyone at Park would like to say big congratulations to John Hanks of Ty Canol Farm. He was nominated and selected as the NFU Cymru community champion at the spring fair in Builth Wells last month. The award recognises the hard work farmers do off the farm to help their local town or village community. Well done John!
2 Open Farm Sunday June 7 th THOMAS SEARLE This month brings Open Farm Sunday, an initiative designed to give the public a chance to experience true farm life. It s a great opportunity to promote the hard work carried out in the farming industry. Best of luck to all those farms who will be opening their gates. Park will be helping out at Goldsland Farm so pop along to show your support. DATES FOR THE DIARY Sunday 7 th June Open Farm Readers Goldsland Farm Internal Parasites of Sheep Keeping it Fresh Instead of going over information you already know I have decided to briefly discuss findings from recent literature in an attempt to keep us all updated on the current recommendations and best practice for anthelmintic treatment in sheep. The majority of these studies have focussed around preventing anthelmintic resistance with the message it should be a team approach with everyone taking responsibility in reducing resistance within the parasitic population. Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) ( SCOPS was setup in 2004 in an attempt to use research and evidence based, "best practice" guidelines to aid a sustainable control of parasites in sheep. It should be an organisation most people are aware of. Earlier this year a study was released evaluating the best practice guidelines SCOPS advocates. These guidelines are summarised below: Quarantine treatments 1. Administer drenches correctly and at the right dose rate 2. Test for Resistance 3. Evaluate your control strategy 4. Reduce dependence on anthelmintics where possible 5. Use anthelmentics only when necessary 6. Select the most appropriate anthelmintics 7. Preserve susceptible worms The study was conducted on 16 farms across the UK, 8 farms carrying out the SCOPS guidelines and 8 left as control farms, where practices of worm control deemed a higher-risk were carried out. Evaluation of lamb productivity (daily live-weight gain), worm infection levels and the number of anthelmintic treatments received were monitored. SCOPS farms were shown to have a higher daily weight gain and finish weight as well as receiving fewer anthelmintic treatments. This study gives us confidence in the guidelines set out by SCOPS and should encourage all to begin implementing their recommendations.
3 Worm Resistance How bad is it? We should all be aware that parasite resistance to the 3 older groups of anthelmintics is present on the majority of farms in Great Britain. A review of findings from studies investigating the level of resistance present on British farms shows: % farms had resistance to Benzimidazoles (Class 1) 47% farms had resistance to Levamisoles (Class 2) 50-63% farms had resistance to the Macrocyclic lactones including moxidectin (Class 3) A pessimist would look at these figures with despair. I am, however, an optimist and would consider that potentially 20% of farms could still be using the Class 1 wormers and 50% the Class 2. Could this be your farm? The best way to know the level of resistance on your farm is to carry out a drench test. Zolvix (Monepantel) This relatively new product reportedly has a 99.9% efficacy in the UK. Unfortunately in October 2014 monepantel resistance was seen on some farms in the Netherlands, emphasising the fact new classes should be used wisely. Recommendations for Zolvix s use include: Quarantine treatments removing resistant worms in animals to stop them entering your farm. Break Dosing Monepantel administration to lambs in mid to late season has been shown to remove worms with resistance to Class 1-3 wormers therefore improving live weight gain. It will also help reduce resistance to these classes while minimising the risk of creating monepantel resistance as the worm refugia is high. Ideally using monepantel for this purpose should be done with evidence from a drench test. 6 Vaccines have been available for some time against Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) virus for the prevention of infection and clinical disease. Problems associated with BVD are principally infertility, milk drop, diarrhoea and calf abnormalities, the last including the dreaded Persistently Infected (PI) animals that shed the virus heavily within the herd, sometimes for years, before usually succumbing to mucosal disease. However, until recently the BVD vaccines have been inactivated (dead), requiring two doses to establish immunity, and targeted against only one of the two prevalent subtypes BVD1. Revaccination at 6-monthly intervals has been recommended. Recently, a new vaccine (Bovela) has been launched, which provides good protection against both subtypes (BVD1 & BVD2), using modified live vaccine strains that only need a single dose to establish protection, within three weeks. Revaccination once a year provides continuous protection against infection, and it's strongly recommended to vaccinate before serving to provide full protection for the developing calf. The vaccine can be used in calves from three months of age, but should not be used in breeding bulls as it has not been tested in such animals. The advent of a live BVD vaccine has the potential to simplify and strengthen BVD control, with its single-dose annual protocol allowing continuous protection. It should be noted, however, that the manufacturer of Bovela comments The cornerstone of BVD eradication is identification and culling of persistently infected (PI) animals. The field studies to investigate the efficacy of the vaccine were done in herds where PI animals had been removed. Thus, for optimal control even when vaccinating, it remains important to screen for PI individuals among any incoming animals of uncertain health status, by means of a simple blood test. Andy Wales Trace elements in sheep The clinical signs associated with trace element deficiency in sheep are often insidious in onset and usually present as poorly grown lambs during late summer/early autumn. Blood sampling for trace elements can be invaluable in late summer. The focus at this time of year is on groups of ewe and rams to assess that they are in optimum condition for mating. The trace element deficiency states generally considered are... Cobalt ('pine' or 'ill-thrift'): Cobalt deficiency in ewes is implicated in increased stillbirths and neonatal mortality. Copper ('swayback'): Low copper results in poor wool growth, poor growth rates, anaemia and fragile bones in growing lambs as well as impaired immune system function. Selenium ('white muscle disease' or 'stiff lamb disease'): Low selenium levels at mating can increase early embryonic mortality rates. In lambs, these trace element deficiency states lead to extended periods to slaughter, lower slaughter weights, and extra feed costs which could add up to 5/lamb. Testing costs VAT per sheep blood sampled and is well worth the investment. GAVIN
7 Pregnancy scanning Ultrasonography is a very helpful tool for accurate diagnosing of pregnancy in animals. It is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows us to see inside the animals by passing the ultrasound transducer into the rectum. It generates a black and white image of the examined object and reveals far more detail than a traditional rectal palpation. Compared to manual exams, ultrasound is easier and less stressful on the animals as well as the vet. Pregnancy checking animals using ultrasound offers numerous advantages that directly affect productivity and profitability over traditional manual exams. Ultrasound is the most accurate way to confirm pregnancy and foetal viability. It is the only tool that can confirm foetal age and foetal sex. It allows for much earlier detection of pregnancy for a quick response time to rebreed animals and reduces risk of foetal death during exam. MORGAN SCANNING As vets, we can offer immediate intervention for empty animals. We charge on time so the faster we get through them the better for you. Our scanner is battery operated, no need for electrics, totally portable. GAVIN
