Mob: Introduction about the Department & Organization Structure Animal Husbandry has great influence on the economic status of the farmers, in turn it place an important role in rural economy. The main occupation of majority of rural population in the district is Agriculture and its allied activities. Agriculture activities are predominantly dependent on drought power provided by animal husbandry sector. Today animal husbandry activities are not just subsidiary to Agriculture. But they have been growing enormously and can conveniently be called an industry.in this regard the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services plays a key role.in giving healthcare to ailing animals and birds. Conducting vaccination programmes to contain the diseases, which in turn also protects human population from Zoonatic diseases.(diseases transmitted from animals to man)department plays a vital role in production of clean, hygienic milk and meat. 3 -3- Objectives & Vision 1. To provide health coverage to all domestic animals and birds, both for contagious and non contagious diseases. 2. To take up livestock developmental activities for increasing the productivity of livestock to benefit both producers as well as consumers. 3. Extend Artificial Insemination facilities for Cattle and Buffaloes with exotic dairy, Indigenous and pedigreed buffaloes bulls for the improvement of genetic mar it for milk production and drought ability of non-descript animals. 4. Development of Dairy, Poultry, Piggery, Fodder and Sheep and Wool along with Rabbit rearing. 5. Training the farmers as well as in-service personnel in various aspects of dairying, Sheep rearing, Poultry, Piggery and Feeding practices. 6. The Department is implementing several socioeconomic programmes like Special Livestock Breeding Programme, Special Component Programme, Tribal Sub Plan and Drought prone area programme like special development programme for fodder development in the irrigated lands of the farmers. 7. The Department also conducts Integrated Sample Survey every year in all the four seasons for estimating production of major livestock products like milk, egg, meat and wool in the state, besides conducting livestock census quadrennial. To boost up the animal production the district Animal Husbandry Department has the following vision. 1. Formation of exclusive vaccination cum extension at each talk level. 2. Establishing laboratory facilities at talk level. 3. Conservation of Indigenous animals and Desi birds. 4. Formation of Animal Welfare Society at District level. 5. Establishment of modern abattoir(slaughter house) at district and taluka level. 6. Formation of Sheep, Goat, Pig farmers co-operative societies at district and taluka level. 7. Supply of improved variety Rams and Bucks for breeding to needy Sheep and Goat farmers. 8. Wool procurement and processing units at Sira, Pavagada and Chikkanayakanahally. Programmes & Schemes highlights I. Organisation: The district has veterinary hospitals at taluka level, upgraded veterinary hospitals at hobli Level, veterinary dispensaries at villages Level, Primary Veterinary Centre are centered in many villages. II. Census and Sample Survey: The Department conducts livestock census once in every five years. Integrated Sample Surveys are conducted to estimate milk, meat and egg production seasonally every year. III. Karnataka Development Programme: 1. Artificial Insemination Programme(A.I.): Each Institution in the department conducts A.I. to improve the germplasm and inturn increase the milk yield in dairy animals. For each A.I. a nominal Fee of Rs.5.00 is collected. 2. Pregnancy Test: Animals Inseminated by A.I. technique are identified after 2½-3 months of Insemination and tested for pregnancy. 3. Vaccination Programme: Preventive vaccination against prevailing diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease(FMD), Black quarter(bq), Hemorrhagic septicemia(hs), Peste de Petit ruminants(ppr), Anthrax, Sheep pox(sp), Ranikhet(RKT) and many other diseases are carried out periodically to keep diseases at a bay. Central Government sponsored ASCAD(Assistance to State to Control Animal Diseases) is being carried out to protect animals against HS and ET. From onwards new Central Government Schemes like NCP-PPR, FMD-CP and Brucella control programmes are being started to contain PPR, FMD and Brucellosis respectively.

4 -4-4. Rinderpest search programme: The deadly disease Rinderpest is a disease of past.(india is declared Rinderpest zero zone by WHO). But still this programme is to conduct Village search and Route search regularly to check if the animals show the classic symptoms of rinderpest disease. 5. Fodder Development Programme: The farmers are encouraged immensly to grow improved variety of fodder to feed the milch cattle. Subject to availability the department supplies fodder minikits, root slips and fodder tree seedlings to interested farmers. 6. Extension Programmes: Kisan Samparka Sabha: For effective transmission of scientific knowledge the KisanSamparka Sabhas are conducted, through which the scientific know how is effectively passed on to needy farmers. Health and Infertility Camps: Health and Infertility Camps are carried out at village level in which the specialists, such as gynaecologists, surgeons and other experts treat the animals and advice the farmers about animal management and fodder development.(30 Camps/district at out lay of Rs.2.00 lakhs/year. Village Visit: The Extension Officers one at each taluka frequently visits villages to help and guide the farmers with regard to the problems faced in Animal Husbandry Activities. Cattle and Calf Exhibition: Cattle Exhibitions are conducted to encourage the farmers to rear improved high yielding breeds and also indigenous draft breeds of cattle. The Calf Exhibitions are conducted to draw the farmers attention towards proper feeding and management of calves. The best reared cattle and calves are rewarded.(2 Camps/district at out lay of Rs.10,000/Camp). Technical Audit: The Extension Officers visits P.V.C.s and examines the various records maintained at the institution. During his visit he guides the sub-staff if any lapse is found. 7. New Programmes: Farmers training: Farmers from village are selected and are trained on various aspects of Animal Husbandry such as breeding, feeding, healthcare, management etc Training the Para veterinary Staff: The Para veterinary staff of the department such as Livestock Development Officers, Livestock Officers, Senior Veterinary Inspectors, Veterinary Inspectors and Veterinary Assistants are given a week s training at Veterinary Inspector Training Centre, Tumkur. There knowledge with regard to Animal Husbandry is upgraded from time to time. Centrally sponsored Schemes: Centrally sponsored Schemes like NCP-PPR, FMD-CP and Brucella control Programmes. 8. Distribution of Giriraja Birds: The Giriraja birds are reared at Tumkur and Sira are distributed all over the district to the needy members of various Sthree Shakti Sanghas. But the distribution of birds is subject to availability of birds.(unit of 5 birds/beneficiary at Rs /unit). a) Special Component Programme(SCP): In this programme needy farmers from the Schedule Caste are selected in cluster villages and are aided with 60% subsidy to buy Crossbred cow units. Beneficiaries are selected at gramasabha and list certified by EO of Taluk Office.(State sector and District Sector C.B.Cow unit 2 cows. Unit cost Rs.70, Subsidy Rs.42,000-00). b) Tribal Sub-plan Programme(TSP): In this programme needy farmers from the Schedule Tribe are selected in cluster villages and are aided with 75% subsidy to buy Crossbred cow units. Beneficiaries are selected at gramasabha and list certified by EO of Taluk Office..(State sector and District Sector C.B.Cow unit 2 cows. Unit cost Rs.70, Subsidy s.52,500-00)

5 -5- c) Special Livestock Breeding Programme: In this Programme the department helps the dairy farmers having the female crossbred calves of four months of age. They are given subsidies to buy feed for the proper growth and development of the calves.(units 100 C.B. Calves/annum, Unit cost Rs , Subsidy SF and MF 50%, AL 66.23%). IV. Medicines Supply: The Zilla panchayath and the Commissionarate of the department supply medicines to the veterinary institutions of the district. The medicines are distributed to Taluka Veterinary Hospitals, Upgraded Veterinary Hospitals or Veterinary Dispensary or Mobile Veterinary Clinics, Primary Veterinary Centers at the ratio of 4:3:2:1. V. Sheep and Wool Development Corporation: This is a separate wing working under Sheep and Wool Development Corporation, Bangalore. This unit takes part exclusively 1) To improve the quality of sheep breeding. 2) To supply improved variety rams to interested farmers. 3) To Provide subsidy on insurance to sheep under Janashree Programme. 4) To conduct training programmes about scientific sheep rearing. 5) To supply medicines for sheep. 6) Bhed palak Programme in which the children of shepherds are given a nominal scholarships for studies. 7) An exgratia amount of Rs.5000/- is given from onwards to the farmers per sheep/goat died. VI. Special Development Programme: 10 taluks of the district are under Special Development Programme. Here the farmers are given financial aids, Demonstration plots at farmers field for which Rs. 3000/- Subsidy will be given to the farmers. Benefit will be given to 70 farmers in the District. VII. Cattle Insurance: Karnataka Livestock Development Agency(KLDA), Bangalore has come out with a novel scheme of giving subsidy to the dairy farmers for insuring their animals. Under this programme all dairy cattle and buffaloes milking more than 1500 litres of milk/annum can be insured at United India Insurance Company, Tumkur, as per the guidelines from KLDA, Bangalore. The premium rates are 2.75%, 5.50% and 7% for one year, two year and three years premium respectively.(service Tax of 10.25% on subsidy premium). The Government gives 50% subsidy for premium amount.
