11 Preface This book is intended to be a practical toolto guide veterinary practitioners, technicians, and veterinary students in the anesthetic management of small animal patients. It is constructed as a step-by-step text that starts at patient evaluation, and then takes the reader through preparation for anesthesia, premedication, induction, maintenance, monitoring and troubleshooting, recovery, and pain management. The book finishes by addressing anesthetic management for specific disease conditions in dogs and cats, breed considerations in dogs, anesthetic specifics in cats, and anesthetic management of small pocket pets and birds. My hope is that it will be a go-to source for anesthesia and analgesia questions that arise on an everyday basis. xv
