3 We have had lagoons for so long that manure is high in K+, so crops are high in K+, so they are dumping K+ usually when they freshen, there is a draw of K+ and they don t have enough. Give 180 grams KCl orally BID X 3 days and usually 30cc Hi-Phos under the skin (phosphate) or 180 grams (6 #7 gel caps) of Monosodium Phospate. If K+ is low at all on bloodwork, give supplemental K+. Pull blood before treatment If CPK High (muscle damage) give 20 cc Flunixin every 12 hours the first day, then every 24 hours for 2 more days IV. If not rising within 12 hours, may treat again, but need to start lifting with hip lifts. Flunixin 36 hour milk and 4 day meat Hip Lifts Float Tanks Mid-lactation down cows often in the summer when it s hot b/c of borderline potassium. Check all 4 quarters if possible because toxic mastitis can also present as down and they may or may not have a fever. Bloody milk because calcium is involved in the clotting cascade. Run Profile If low Potassium, do oral K+ every 12 hours for a few days. Down cows should be showing progress within 2 days. If no effort to stand once hip-lifted = BAD!! Injury: Torn stifle or peroneus tertius not to hard to diagnose. They need the good leg down to help them to get up. **The cow needs to get out of the free-stalls or very difficult to treat and get up ** Look at the alignment of the back Broken off spinal processes may or may not mean there is spinal cord compression Try to hip lift 2-3X/day and start within 6-12 hours of being down to help prevent compartment syndrome Deep bedding helps Follow-up on down cows: Up and doing fine no follow-up needed Up then went down recheck may have an injury and may need Flunixin Still down Flunixin, roll side to side, hiplift If No improvement in 48 hours Euthanize 3
