28 Treatment Guidelines for CAP Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and internationally is the leading cause of death from an infectious disease and the sixth leading cause of death overall. Over the past decade international societies have published and revised guidelines for the management of patients with CAP. e.g. ATS-IDSA (2007), European Respiratory Society (ERS) (2005), IMPACT(2005), etc.
