1 1111 MASTIFF RESCUE OF FLORIDA SPRING 2018 Quarter3 Mastiff Rescue of Florida Spring 2018 Mastiff Rescue of Florida is a nonprofit organization founded to meet the needs of English Mastiffs throughout the State of Florida. These dogs, through no fault of their own, are not able to stay with their owners. We are an allvolunteer rescue that works to find forever homes and to educate the public about these gentle giants. A MESSAGE FROM PAM Hello, I wish I could tell you that Mastiff Rescue of Florida has been slow...but I cannot. Dogs are coming in insane numbers not only to MRF but to all the rescues. Some of our rescue friends have waiting lists...when you are foster based, and the fosters are full...it puts a hurting on saving dogs. Since January 1, 2018, we have brought in 14 dogs. We have crossed the line on 2 that are not full English but we had to help. 1 was starved- tied out for the Pittie fighters to use as a bait dog and the sweetest dog and the other a charming very large in his golden years Bullmastiff years old. We also put to good use our "Hand to Paw" fund. a gentleman called us... he had lost his job but wanted to keep his loved Mastiff girls but needed our help. Both dogs needed to be spayed and 1 needed Entropia surgery...mrf loves it when people want to keep their dogs and YES, we want to help. So many times, people just need that little bridge of help...we have all been there. The BIG NUMBER SO FAR... and the month is not over and we are working on 4 more. We have taken in 10 English Mastiffs and 2 wannabes! We have 28 "Oldies but Goodies" in the family a couple crossed the Rainbow Bridge. And we have 6 in Medical Needs Fosters. MRF has a large family that we take care of...that's why we need and appreciate our Amazon Wish list Donations and also financial Donations. It is a tough world for these animals and our supporters give us the power to make it happen. We are in awe of CBD oil from Hemp My Pet and have printed an article in this newsletter... the hemp oil has helped so many of our "Oldies many of our younger ones with anxiety and several of ours with cancer. We have been using it since November to give it a serious try and it is so worth it and the company is WONDERFUL to work with. Please check it out! This is a short letter... we are tired. Humanity needs to change... most of all the dogs we get are owner surrenders...these dogs have emotions... Nasty Divorces, too much work, having a baby...too much slime and too much hair, and the classic too old, just want to get a puppy. We have a throw out society with NO COMMITMENT! Thank you so much for being there for MRF. Pam Boswell, President IN THIS ISSUE Hemp Extract & Arthritis Learn tips to help your aging Mastiff become his/her youthful self again! 2 MASTIFF RESCUE OF FLORIDA SPRING 2018 Issue 3 2 A Home Found! At times we receive Mastiffs who require a special home due to their needs. Marmaduke is one such Mastiff. Marmaduke is a super sweet little guy at about 110 lbs and 8 years old. He needed a forever foster to love him. We don't know his story, but he was found on the side of the road, apparently just resting with nowhere to go. How could someone abandon him? There are a couple of things you need to know about him! He is incredibly loving, just wants to be near you, all the time. Unfortunately, we had an incident where he wanted to be the only one around. He's HW+ and is on the slow kill protocol. He needs meds for that, and a diuretic to lessen fluid retention. That means he needs to drink a lot and go outside more frequently than he did without the medication. It has not been an issue and he doesn't wake me up needing to go out at night. He s fostered with someone who can meet his needs. He takes his pills easily with a slice of cheese, spoon of canned food, or a soft sweet potato, all of which he loves. He also loves marrow bones. He is not at all food aggressive & is not pushy. He has a very dry mouth. At some time in his life his hips/legs were injured. He's healed now & gets around well but he's slow. He doesn't mind being in a crate, but I haven't found any reason to crate him. He doesn't get into trash or shoes or anything or get on furniture. He might give a bark to alert you to someone outside but doesn't carry on at all. Thank you to Deb & Steven for loving Marmaduke and giving him a great home in the Oldies but Goodies program! Keeping Healthy ALLERGY PROBLEMS THE HOLISTIC NATURAL WAY We hear daily about allergy problems in dogs. Many times you must get help from the veterinarian..but first why not look at the food that you are feeding, look at that chemicals that you are using LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE. Educate yourselves on building your companions immune system..not a chemical quick fix! Allergies in dogs manifest in many ways but most often through the skin, causing itching, scratching, paw-licking, hot spots, etc. Many people consider these symptoms to be caused by fleas, pollens, grasses, and foods. From a holistic perspective, however, allergies indicate an internal imbalance and therefore should not be treated as a local, isolated condition. Antibiotics and steroids are commonly used to treat allergies, and although they may sometimes be necessary, they only mask the symptoms and provide temporary relief, at best. Complimentary therapies, such as homeopathy and acupuncture, address the deeper constitutional level and help restore balance to the whole dog. Allergic conditions are still difficult to treat, however, and can take months or even longer to cure. The most important thing you can do to minimize allergy discomfort and improve the overall health of your companion is to feed a high-quality diet. Raw or home-cooked food is best. If you are using dry or canned food, buy the highest quality you can find and afford and supplement with healthy fresh food. Wheat, corn, soy, and other grains are common allergens for dogs, so it s best to avoid them. If using a commercially processed kibble, duck or fish and potato are good options. Dietary supplements can also be helpful. Omega 3 essential fatty acids support the immune system and reduce inflammation and itching. Fish oils, such as those found in wild salmon, anchovies, and sardines, are good sources, as is flaxseed oil. Antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories such as quercetin (a natural anti-histamine) and pycnogenol are other excellent supplements. Vitamins C and E and both western and Chinese herbs can be helpful. Fidowobenzym is a systemic enzyme which has been known to reduce inflammation,. Coconut oil is wonderful in the food. Turmeric too. Educate yourselves.. There is so much to look at before reaching for that EASY FIX with steroids and drugs. Excessive vaccinations, environmental and dietary toxins, and emotional stress can trigger or exacerbate allergies. Use natural flea and tick control to avoid exposing your dog to toxic chemicals. Topical treatments like oatmeal baths, aloe vera and calendula gels, coconut oil on the skin, apple cider vinegar and green tea compresses are soothing to the skin plus the use of Essential oils Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet in treating your dog s allergies, but these natural approaches can provide relief while addressing the underlying imbalances in your dog s health.

FOR MORE INFORMATION Facebook: Essentially Spoiled Pets OR CONTACT jandoscia@abaresults.com Allergens and irritants are present everywhere in our environment. Pets may be sensitive to grasses, trees, shrubs, pollen, foods, medications, insect bites, fragrances and cleaning products! Allergic pets commonly have red, itchy skin especially affecting the face, ears, paws and rectum. Itchy pets will scratch, rub, roll, lick and bite themselves, scoot, and shake their heads. Addressing seasonal, environmental, or food allergies will help many of the secondary conditions such as ear or skin infections to heal. Allergic pets may scratch so much that they cause skin lesions and open wounds. Skin infections may be treated with an antibacterial shampoo (see recipe) followed by applying Lavender and Melaleuca. Lavender is a natural antihistamine, antiinflammatory and anti-infectious agent. Lavender also helps to repair the skin. Melaleuca/Tea Tree has been documented to kill many bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact, so it is excellent as an antiseptic for DOGS with itchy skin (do not use on cats). Our family loves Melaleuca and uses it on any insect bite to stop the itch instantly! Diffusing Young Living s Theives Essential Oil blend or Frankincense is helpful in killing environmental molds and in preventing infection in your home. We only recommend and will refer to the use of 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils. No-No s: Never put essential oils directly in the eyes or ears of your pet. For Dogs: Apply 1-2 drops of Lavender 2-3 times daily. Apply 1-2 drops of Melaleuca twice daily for secondary skin infections. Combine one drop each of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint in an empty vegetable capsule and administer by mouth 2-4 times daily. Alternatively, combine 1 drop each of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint and apply 2-4 times daily. Antibacterial Shampoo 10 oz. Water 2 oz. 5 MASTIFF RESCUE OF FLORIDA SPRING 2018 Issue 3 5 Volunteer Spotlight Priscilla Mathews is one of our longer-term volunteers and directors. Upon seeing a story in the Orlando news about a bonded pair of English Mastiff's found by the side of their deceased owner, she contacted MRF about seven years ago. Priscilla had a Bullmastiff and American Bulldog currently as family members and had rescued a Neapolitan Mastiff previously. Born and raised in Florida, growing up with hunting dogs, MRF seemed a natural course at this time in her life. Three daughters, six grandchildren, two cats, many turtles and of course her fury babies keep her busy as a retired person. She was the Program Director at a retirement community it's in Fort Myers for nineteen years where she also coordinated Special Olympics for many years. She dabbles in antiques and collectibles at one of the shops in the antique district in Arcadia, where she currently lives in a one hundred year old home. She recently returned to work where she teaches a class of middle schoolers in a private school. She is a very busy lady but always has time for MRF her second family. "My love for the big four-legged babies keeps me on tract with my belief that after all is said and done, Dogs are man's best friend. Their care is our commitment to a better world." Priscilla hates photos and has sent a photo of her gran-dog. MRF tried to find a photo of Priscilla and could not...but we will get one...she Exists! MRF is truly fortunate to have Priscilla part of the team! Interested in volunteering? Please contact us! Mastiffrescue1@gmail.com Peggy and Mae's story Peggy, One of our Oldie fosters writes about her experience with HempMyPet This is my old girl, Mae. I rescued her through Mastiff Rescue 4 years ago, skin and bones, so weak she could barely stand. In addition to being emaciated, she was loaded with both internal and external parasites, had a urinary infection, and during spaying was discovered to have ovarian cancer. We had a rough start. She was so sick, and didn't think she could trust me. She healed in many ways, and is now an old, happy, loving girl. Unfortunately, she has degenerative hips and knees, and has trouble getting around. But she is still happy and loving life. I began to wonder if it would be kinder to let her go. But it was suggested I try Hemp my Pet CBD oil... All I can say is WOW! Mae is getting up so much easier, and has started trying to chase squirrels in the yard again! The difference this oil has made in her quality of life is amazing! Thank you for giving my old girl some comfort. HempMy Pet has been extremely rescue friendly. 6 MASTIFF RESCUE OF FLORIDA SPRING 2018 Issue 3 6 Life as Newton Knows It by Newton Andoscia Hello, my name is Newton and this article is about how I see life as an 8-year-old English Mastiff. You might be surprised I can type, but alas, we mastiffs are full of slobbery surprises! If you follow me through my Facebook page, then you know I love my family, look forward to camping, tolerate my baby brother and do consider myself a coinsure of dog beds. Today I d like to discuss meeting tiny humans and other furry people like me. First, the tiny humans; your version of a hairless puppy. I have one at home, she s who I have named, Baby. I love her fiercely and will protect her with my life; something I have had to do. Now, I like the little furless things, but some of my friends get a bit nervous when meeting them. Tiny humans are quick, erratic, loud and grabby! Also, we tend to love our tiny humans so much that we become (as mom says) overly protective (what does she know). So, here are some tips: When you arrive home with the newborn, first greet your dog alone so it doesn't get excited and jump on the baby. Allow your dog to adjust to the smell, sight and sound of the baby before introducing them in closer proximity. Allow the dog to sniff the baby while controlled on a leash. Pet him and give him praise while he sniffs. Most dogs adapt easily, but always take precautions. Always allow the dog to approach you and the baby. Allow the dog to choose to interact with the baby. Invites prevent bites. Once your dog is used to the baby's smell, allow the dog to sniff the baby off leash. Your dog may react differently if the baby suddenly screams, cries or kicks and interpret these signs as an invitation to play or as a warning. When interacting with the dog and baby, keep the baby elevated and make sure an adult is between them at all times. Dogadult-baby seating order. Give your dog plenty of attention when the baby is around. You don't want him to decide good things only happen when the baby isn't around. Don't scold the dog for picking up the baby's toys. You don't want the smell of the baby being associated with anything negative. Simply replace the child's toy with the dog s toy. Babies change quickly, and it can be difficult for the dog to adapt as quickly. Once your baby begins to crawl, make sure that he/she doesn't pull on the dog's tail or ears. Snapping and growling are natural canine behaviors when they are trying to communicate a warning. Even the most tolerant dog has its limits! Have safety zones for the dog. A safe zone is a private space a crate, a bed, a gated laundry room, etc. where he or she can get away when the activity is too much for him or her. Children should not be allowed to invade the dog s private space. It is OK to keep the dog out of the baby s room with a gate, etc., especially if he is curious and attempts to jump on the crib or changing table. Next up, let s talk about meeting other furry friends (from cats to dogs cows to elephants). I get so excited when I get the chance to meet other pets! However, I don t like them to walk by my fence or on my street (yes, I own the street and all the land I can see). When on hikes, I want to pull and run to them! Unfortunately, some pets don t want to meet me (crazy, right?) and once there was a pet who wanted to hurt me and my baby. If you re planning on bringing a new pet into your home, or introducing us to other pets, here are some tips to make it less stressful and more fun: Introduce on neutral territory. Pay attention to both animal s body language. Let the animals decide the pace of the introduction. Continue to monitor them closely. I like meeting other animals, but crowds and new men are too much for me. Mom knows this and makes sure to only put me in positive situations. I don t like others snarling at my mom or baby, so Dad knows to take hold of me when we hike around uncivilized dogs. Knowing your furry pet s limits and uncomfortable triggers will help you insure to keep them and others safe. May your barks be less, And your slobbers be more. And nothing but Mastiffs, Come through your door. Until next time, Newton My Baby Thanks to MRF, I have my own baby (pictured here). I tolerate more from my baby than I would from other small humans and I m very protective of her. I stay in her room until I know she s asleep every night, then I go to mommy. I make rounds of the house many times nightly to check on the safety of all my humans. So EXCITED! I love to camp! Best part of camping (other than peeing on each bush) is meeting other pets! I love it! Here I am meeting a new friend who wanted to play! Sometimes other pets are scared of my size and sometimes other humans haven t taught their pets manners (ie- don t try to attack others), so dad always holds my leash and asks permission first before I meet my new friends. Meeting Siblings Yup. This happened. I was NOT happy with mom. Things were going swell and this excuse for a dog (aka Little Brother) came into my life and (the audacity) sat on mom s lap and my bed. I pouted. It was difficult at first and mom kept an eye on me (I so could have eaten him), but I learned to love the little pest and will now protect him with all I have. Stupid little brother.

I lay down to eat. I was on pain medication, Previcox (the big one) to name a few. None of these medications worked very well. Just seemed to take the edge off. Always struggling along. Her foster Jane writes: When she came to live with us she was very obese. Couldn't hardly walk. She has lost weight but was still in pain. She is such a sweet old soul. I couldn't bear to see her like this. So I witnessed a miracle. She was given HempMy Pet oil. This stuff is great. She is running but not far. Playing, standing to eat. The pictures says it all. She loves to attack pine cones and through them in the air. Thanks Mastiff Rescue Florida HempMy Pet has been extremely rescue friendly.
