SOUTHERN OREGON HORSE AND CARRIAGE CLUB P.O. Box 7584 Klamath Falls, Or SOUTHERN OREGON HORSE AND CARRIAGE CLUB February 10,2018 SOHACC didn't have a business meeting in February so there are no minutes to present. We held an activity meeting at Dan and Linda Lown's in Keno. Members and drivers came for a playday that included a cones course and Bill's cool new reinboard that we will be using at the EXPO. We also met the 4H student Kieryn Ruda who won the driving scholarship of a harness and cart for her pony. Michael, Virginia and Bill gave her a harnessing and hitching lesson and she rode out on the cones course with Michael. He says she's the perfect candidate, as she drove Mr. Peanut through the cones clean the very first time through! More on that later. It was a great day of driving fun. Thanks to the Lowns for hosting and Dan for the delicious chicken fajitas! We're doing it again on St. Patrick's Day at 3 Hats Training Center hosted by President William Trento and Michael Wakefied. The next business meeting will be on April 18,2018, location to be determined. Watch your March newsletter for details! Come Drive With US!!

Your 2018 Events Calendar is up on the SOHACC website We've also got events for other driving centers on our website events calendar. Check it out! We are preparing to host an event for the two days at the Packing Expo this year. Kathy Graves will be in charge of the education booth at the event and is asking the following: Dear SOHACC Members, For the Education booth at the HDTR Pack Clinic and Horse Expo I would like to have catalogs of carriage driving tack and equipment on the table for visitors to take. If you have a company or a provider of harness and/or vehicles you like to use, please share their name and contact information with me. I have my favorite vendors I use, but I am not familiar with all of them. I don t really know who the best are for ordering harness and vehicles for draft horses or for miniature horses, so please educate me. If you will send me the names and phone numbers or website addresses, I will take care of contacting them and ordering catalogs. Thanks, Kathy Graves OUR NEXT BUSINESS MEETING WILL BE APRIL 18TH LOCATION TBA, 5:30 P.M., NO HOST DINNER AND THE MEETING WILL BEGIN AT 6:00 P.M. 6 A tick(ing) time bomb is set to explode this season. Health and insect experts are calling it a perfect storm of conditions coming together to create what is expected to be an extremely heavy tick season. And with ticks, come the dangers of tick-borne disease for horses, dogs, and humans. Ticks are more prevalent in tall grass and wooded areas inhabited by deer. While most people may be aware of deer ticks, which carry Lyme disease and are found in the Northeast region of the country, it s important to remember that different species of ticks are found across the U.S. and that they carry a variety of other diseases. Horses in Northern Virginia are commonly affected by two tick-borne diseases Info@TotalEqineVets.com facebook.com/totalequi. Jce Dr. Sallie HymaLyme Disease Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Clinical signs of Lyme disease vary and can be non-specific. Symptoms These include: Lethargy Stiffness Skin sensitivity Change in behavior Unspecified lameness Neurologic abnormalities Diagnosis Diagnosis can be made with the SNAP 4DX test for a quick stallside result and can be confirmed with the multiplex test that differentiates among vaccine titers, chronic, and acute infections. Prevention & Treatment Lyme disease can best be prevented through combined vaccination and monthly topical treatment with Vectra 3D. Original vaccination requires two injections, two to four weeks apart. Lyme vaccines are then given every six months for optimum coverage. If infected, treatment consists of oxytetracycline, doxycycline, or minocycline. Treatment usually lasts days. Anaplasmosis Anaplasmosis is the tick-transmitted disease that most commonly causes illness in horses. The causative organism,
Anaplasma phagocytophilum, is a bacterium that was previously called Ehrlichia equi, hence the persistent older disease name, Equine Ehrlichiosis. Ticks can also transmit this organism to humans and other animal species, including dogs and livestock, resulting in similar clinical illness. Symptoms Once bitten: The horse generally becomes sick 3-14 days after the infected tick bite. The fever in the early stage of the disease is generally very high (103 to 106 F). Younger horses under 4 years old tend to have mild or no clinical signs where as geriatric horses may become more ill. Others clinical signs may include lower limb edema, depression, reluctance to move, depressed appetite, and occasionally staggering. Diagnosis Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, as well as testing for Anaplasma from a blood sample. The SNAP 4DX test can be used stallside to get confirmation quickly. Treatment Antibiotic treatment is usually very effective if the horse is treated soon after the signs of illness begin. The antibiotic of choice is oxytetracycline, which is administered intravenously followed by oral doxycycline. Relapses may occur if antibiotic treatment is too short. Other supportive care, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID, eg. Banamine), and leg support wraps, are often employed. Ticks should be removed and destroyed. Other horses on the same farm should also be checked for both ticks and early signs of illness. There is no vaccine for this disease, so a horse owner s best defense is to minimize tick habitat in their horse s environment, use topical insecticides that include a label claim for ticks, and to remove any ticks found on the horse as promptly as possible Info@TotalEquineVets.com facebook.com/totalequinevets Equine Application of Vectra 3D Total volume 24 ml (3 tubes of red packaged > 95lb dog product) 1. Apply 8mL tube as a stripe from the base of left ear, down the neck to withers all the way to tail head. Apply remainder of tube as a spot on each cheek taking care not to get any in the eyes.
2. Apply second 8mL tube starting from base of right ear, down the neck to withers all the way to tail head. Apply remainder of tube as a 6 inch stripe on the forehead. 3. With the third 8mL tube apply a uniform stripe on the back of each leg, starting at the knee to the pastern in front legs and hock to pastern in hind legs. General Considerations Allow 6-12 hours for Vectra 3D to dry. Do not bathe the horse in this time. Do not allow the horse to be exposed to rain for this time. Drying time will be linked to ambient temperature but 6-12 hours should allow be sufficient. Rolling during the drying time may manually remove Vectra 3D decreasing efficacy. No blankets, leg wraps, boots, a fly mask or any other apparel should be worn during application. Blankets, etc. can be replaced once Vectra 3D has dried. Drying can be tested by blotting with a tissue. Bathing Only Ceva skincare products are approved as compatible with Vectra 3D except Oxiderm. Bathing with detergent based products, eg Dawn, Johnsons Baby shampoo and many other commonly used products will strip Vectra 3D off the skin and render the application useless. Expectations Fly repellency may gradually decline in the 4th week of the 30-day period. There is approximately 70x more active ingredient in Vectra 3D than leading fly spray products. Vectors will still land or climb on a horse but will be killed by contact with the hair & skin of the horse. The frequency and overall number of insect bites will be very significantly reduced but never completely eliminated. General Safety: The most common adverse event is agitation caused by the sensation of Vectra 3D spreading on the skin surface. This is not a reaction to the ingredients themselves. Most episodes resolve within about 30 minutes and activities to distract your horse such as feeding or hand walking may be sufficient. If you are concerned then take steps to remove Vectra 3D and contact us.
Vectra 3D can be completely removed by washing with a detergent based product such as Dawn. Vectra 3D should be purchased directly from your veterinarian. Online pet pharmacies are not legally permitted to buy supplies from veterinary pharmaceutical companies. A significant percentage of online pharmacies sell counterfeit medications, items that have been stored improperly making them useless or harmful, and/or expired or relabeled product. Editor's Note: SOHACC doesn't recommend or promote any veterinary products. This article was submitted by Kathy Graves for informational purposes. Pricing of Vectra 3D: 3 Tubes/1 Dose Price = $75 or Buy More, Save More! 9 tubes/3 Doses = $195 ***************************** ADVERTISEMENTS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
