1 The Newsletter of Youngstown All Breed Training Club Mahoning Ave. P.O. Box 397 North Jackson, Oh What is AKC Obedience? Demonstrating the usefulness of a dog as a companion to humankind, AKC Obedience is a sport with rules, regulations, judges, conditioning, training, placements and prizes. Dog and handler teams are judged on how closely they match the judge's mental picture of a theoretically perfect performance as they execute a series of specified exercises. Accuracy and precision are essential, but the natural movement of the handler and the willingness and enjoyment of the dog are very important. Helen Whitehouse Walker devised the first obedience "test" in Mt. Kisco, New York in 1933 to show the intelligence of her poodles. The first AKC licensed obedience trial was held in 1936 with approximately 200 entries in 18 trials. Each level of obedience competition - novice, open, and utility - requires mastering a specific skill set, which increase in difficulty, before advancing to the next level. Novice Class demonstrates good canine companion skills such as heeling, both with and without a leash, coming when called, standing for a simple physical examination, and staying in both a sit and a down position with a group of dogs. In Novice Class, dogs earn an AKC Companion Dog (CD) title after receiving a qualifying score under three different judges. Open Class is more challenging as more exercises are done off leash and retrieving and jumping challenges are added. In Open Class, dogs earn an AKC Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title after receiving a qualifying score under three different judges. Utility Class, which includes scent discrimination, directed retrieves, jumping and silent signal exercises, is the most challenging class. In Utility Class, dogs earn an AKC Utility Dog (UD) title after receiving qualifying scores from three different judges. Upon completion of the UD title, dogs may earn the Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) by receiving 10 passing scores in both Open B and Utility B at the same show. The Obedience Trial Championship (OTCH) title is often referred to as the "PhD" for dogs, is the highest obedience honor a dog can receive. To obtain an OTCH title, a dog and handler team must earn 100 points by placing first, second, third or fourth in the Open B or Utility B class and a first place in Utility B and/or Open B three times. In 2002, "Hobi,"a Shetland Sheepdog, earned 1,235 OTCH points to be the top OTCH-pointed dog in the country. "Hobi" also holds the most lifetime OTCH points record with 16,711. To compete in the AKC National Obedience Invitational dogs must be the top OTCH and OTCHpointed dogs in each breed. The AKC National Obedience Championship title (NOC) is awarded to one dog each year. Only dogs winning the AKC National Obedience Championship are permitted to have the prestigious NOC letters precede it's name in AKC records. There are eleven NOCs in the thirteen-year history of this event, two dogs having won the award twice. YABTC Dues Are Due July 01 AKC has added more titling classes. 3 Reinhart s Fly Steady & True Four Seasons k9 Athlete Center has a flyball team. Calvin and Bill Reinhart have been on the team almost from the beginning. Calvin is a very consistent runner and rarely makes a mistake. Flyball is not nearly as easy to compete in as you might think. Your dog has to run in a straight line for about 75 feet away from the handler, going over 4 jumps. Then the dog has to hit a spring loaded box to release a tennis ball which he has to catch and bring back over the 4 jumps to the handler. Not only does the dog have to pass it's team mate on the way back but also has to keep focused on the handler because there is a competing team about 15 feet away from them doing the same thing, with no gating between the 2 teams. On May 9-10 the flyball team went to upper Michigan to compete in a U-Fli tournament where they won their division on Saturday and Sunday. Bill and Calvin ran in almost every heat of every tournament. Calvin has multiple titles in two flyball organizations and is a great asset to the team. Other members of the team are Sue Wolfendale, Rachelle Olson, Marsha Lanfried, Pam Ludolph, Gail Gieger, and Janet Kemerer. Sent into YABTC by ~ Janet Kemerer If you have never seen flyball, classes are held on Wednesday evenings at Four Seasons. Best Puppy in Shows On Sunday, 05/17/2009, Absolute Balboa's Dream of MiMar ("Rocky") was entered again for 2 shows at the IABCA shows at Washington, PA. He may have been a little full of himself the second day; however, he didn't miss a beat. He again won the Puppy Working Class for BOTH shows and again, went on to win Best Puppy in Show for BOTH shows. Rocky is now a National and an International Puppy Champion at (BA) by receiving four (4) SG-1 ratings by 4 different judges. ~ Mary Mignogna and Rocky New Companion Dog (CD) Title Novo-Dia's Raging Red Baron, CD, RE, CGC ("Baron") gave me the BEST Mother's Day gift ever. He qualified in Novice A Obedience and received his 3rd qualifying score for his CD title! It was truly an honor to receive our first CD together and we would like to thank all of those who have helped us train, gave us hints, held the run-thrus, etc. You guys truly are the best and thank you for not giving up on me (or Baron!). Just think, now comes training for our CDX title!!! ~ Mary Mignogna and Baron Life timers: We don t want your money, but we do want your completed renewal form for our records. 6 Health Shedding: How to Keep the Fur from Flying A dog that doesn't shed? Not unless it's one that's totally hairless. Shedding is the part of your pup's biology that lets a new coat come in. Fortunately, one simple thing can help keep more fur on Fluffy and less on your favorite sweater. Brush, brush, brush. The more hair you're able to dispose of, the less of it you'll find on your clothes, couch, carpet, and car seats. Short-haired dogs should be brushed two or three times a week, while medium- to long-haired dogs should be groomed daily, especially during the spring and the summer. If your pooch develops severe mats, take her to your vet or a professional groomer -- careful shaving is the only way to take care of the problem. And ask what kind of brush is best for your dog's coat. Let your vet know if your pooch starts shedding more than usual or if you notice bald spots. Excessive hair loss is not a part of normal aging, and it could be a sign of a health condition, including cancer, ringworm, mange, or a skin infection. A bonus of regular brushing, besides keeping your house as hair-free as possible: It'll keep your pup's coat cleaner, softer, and completely petable! Panicky Dogs Quinn, a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix was adopted from a caring rescue group at 4 months, and adjusted well to her new family. With her cushy life in her loving new home, she had nothing to fear. Except bananas. Quinn can sit and watch in fascination as her owner eats a banana. She wants a bite. But, if her owner offers her the banana, by extending it toward her, Quinn bolts out of the room in fear. One has to wonder if Quinn had an unfortunate run-in with a banana as a pup. Many dogs have seemingly strange fears, such as of men with moustaches or people wearing hats. Some dogs are fine on carpeted stairs but refuse to walk on wooden ones. There s no way to know how a dog processes what he encounters, but we can be sure they don t see things the same way we do. It s unlikely a dog sees a vacuum cleaner as a cleaning device. To some dogs, it s a toy to chase or it s something annoying to ignore. To others, it s a noisy, scary thing scooting about that doesn t heed his warning to stop. And it s attached to his owner s hand is it hurting her? To some dogs, the vacuum cleaner is a dangerous intruder. But some fears run deeper, and are actual phobias. The most common phobia in dogs is of noise, especially fireworks and thunderstorms. Many dogs express concern over these noises, but the truly phobic dog may go berserk. The phobic dog may jump out a window, chew through doors or walls, run away anything to escape the noise. Ironically, it s the most loving owners that do exactly the wrong thing for their fearful dogs. The caring owner runs over and comforts the dog when he starts panicking. This just confirms to the dog that yes, this is something to fear, and the reward for panicking is love and affection. Next time there s a clap of thunder, the dog will again panic. Comforting the dog makes the owner feel better, but it doesn t help the dog. According to Cesar Millan of National Geographic Channel s The Dog Whisperer, in his book, Cesar s Way, Love is not meant to enhance instability. Love is meant to reward stability, to take us to a higher level of communication. He goes on to say, of course you should love your dog at all times, but show affection at appropriate times. Withhold affection when your dog is behaving inappropriately. A better response to fear is to remain calm yourself and let your dog see that there is nothing to be afraid of. Speak to him gently; offer a command such as come or sit. Distract him with a toy. Let him see that this thunderstorm is no big deal and you re all going to get through it just fine. Cesar Millan says that when your dog is afraid, he needs leadership. While many doggie fears and phobias can be dealt with by your own calm reaction, some dogs will need the help of a behavior expert or even medication. As for Quinn, the banana-fearing dog, her owner continued to casually offer her a banana whenever she sat and watched her eat one. While bananas may always give her the willies, she can now remain composed, and simply turn her head away from it. Foreign Land Imagine when you were old enough to leave home, getting on an airplane and arriving in a foreign land. The people you will be living with are a completely different species of animal. They don t have your instincts, they don t think like you think, or speak your language, or even use their senses in the same way. Pretty much everything your mother taught you doesn t apply. That may be what it s like to become a pet in a person s home. When a dog comes to live with you, he needs to establish a hierarchy are you the pack leader or is he? Since many pet owners aren t even aware the dog is evaluating this, the owner may unknowingly signal that she s a subordinate. The dog then has to become the pack leader which can cause some serious misunderstandings. It s kind of like if you got a new job and you thought the guy in the next office was your assistant, and you treated him as such, only to find out later he s your boss. 6 Youngstown All Breed Training Club June 2009

7 When a cat comes to live with you, she first needs to establish her territory. If you have no other cats, the job is pretty easy everything is hers. If there s another cat there, everything might as well be labeled property of original cat. The new cat has the difficult task of taking some of the first cat s territory. It would be a little like accidentally being booked in the same vacation rental home with strangers. The party who got there first would feel it belonged to them. The party who arrived second would feel like an intruder, even though they have just as much right to it. Thus, with cats, depending on their personalities, the division of territory can be friendly, or the fur could fly. A dog is hard-wired to live in a group and please others. He gets his info on the world mostly through his nose, leaves messages with urine, and has a survival instinct to eat whatever he finds. So it comes as a surprise to him that the human he wishes to please doesn t understand the message left on the side of the couch, or appreciate her behind being sniffed. It doesn t make sense to him that any food in reach shouldn t be devoured immediately. With a good, consistent owner, the dog quickly learns that some of his natural dogginess doesn t work well with people. So he adapts. A cat is a solitary animal wired to hunt. In your home, there is no need to hunt unless you have a rodent problem. Mice or not, she is always ready for them, viewing anything that moves as possible prey. A cat likes things her way, and will try to get the owner to do what she wants her to do. She finds that the home has wonderful surfaces to scratch and is flabbergasted that the owner gets noisy about that. She learns these things must be done when alone. Both cats and dogs get past the language barrier pretty quickly, which is amazing considering how differently we communicate. We rely heavily on speech, but our pets don t use words. Our pets use their tails to communicate, but we don t have tails. Still, pets and people understand each other pretty well most of the time. Our pets are very different creatures, which is why most behaviorists favor understanding your pet rather than punishing for bad behavior. Most of the time, your pet is doing what he was made to do. He just doesn t yet understand what he should be doing instead. To Celebrate getting Older Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written." My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more: 1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present. 12. It's OK to let your children see you cry. 13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. YABTC Dues Are Due July 01. If you would like to make payments, turn in your renewal form by July 01. We will work with you to set up a schedule. 17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. 19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer. June 2009 Youngstown All Breed Training Club 7

8 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it f or a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple. 24. The most important sex organ is the brain. 25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?' 27. Always choose life. 28. Forgive everyone everything. 29. What other people think of you is none of your business. 30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. 31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 33. Believe in miracles. 34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do. 35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young. 37. Your children get only one childhood. 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back. 41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 42. The best is yet to come. 43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 44. Yield. 45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."
