Humane Society of McDonough County What We ve Been Up To This Last Year
Spay/Neuter Transports we partner with the Quincy Humane Society to offer spay/ neuter services to the community We cover the cost of altering and vaccines for barn and feral cats ($25 each). The Quincy Humane Society provides transport to and from Quincy, and also offers low cost spay/neuter and vaccines for companion cats and dogs from our area.
Spay/Neuter Transports We sponsored 8 spay/neuter transports of community animals to the Quincy Humane Society this last year 158 cats and 4 dogs were altered and received vaccines
Rescue/Foster/Adop?on The HSMC is a licensed rescue with the State of Illinois, ullizing foster homes for dogs and cats rescued from the McDonough County Animal Shelter unll forever homes are found. In 2016, 40 cats were rescued from the shelter and 52 cats were adopted out as either companion cats or barn cats.
Rescue/Foster/Adop?on Susie (rescued in 2015) completed her heartworm treatment while living sequenlally in two foster homes, and was adopted into a loving home this fall.
Rescue/Foster/Adop?on Six dogs were rescued from the Shelter in 2016 One dog, Duke, remains in foster care.
Rescue/Foster/Adop?on Four cats are currently in foster care and are available for adoplon as companion cats: Freckles, Chestnut, SebasLan, and Chewy. Chewy

Pet Food Pantry This program was established to help families in financial distress keep pets in their homes and out of the local shelter. Since its inceplon in November 2015, the HSMC Pet Food Pantry, located with Loaves and Fishes at the Presbyterian Church, has distributed well over 1500 pounds in pet food and kizy lizer to needy families in the McDonough County area.
Bushnell 4- H Goal Diggers Pet Food Pantry City Hall is the designated donalon site for pet food and lizer drop- off. Generous contribulons have also been received from groups such as the Bushnell 4- H Goal Diggers, MacArthur School, Episcopalian Church Bless a Pet Day, Gimme Shelter Golf OuLng, and the WIU Greek Community
Infrared Thermometers Donated to local law enforcement agencies to help protect children and pets in hot cars. Thermoworks thermometers detect the temperature inside a locked vehicle to determine if an animal or child is at risk. On a 72 degree day, the temperature inside a car can increase by 30 to 40 degrees in an hour, turning the car into an oven. Dogs are unable to sweat the way people do, so their body temperatures rise very quickly in warm cars, leading to panic, heat stroke, liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure, and in a very short Lme, death. Leaving the windows open a few inches does almost nothing to keep the car cool, while leaving the dog and contents of the car vulnerable to thee.
Medical Funds We contribute $35 toward the spay/ neuter of animals adopted from the McDonough County Animal Shelter, maintain a cat vaccine fund, and contribute $25 toward the spay/neuter of barn/feral cats. We provide needed medical treatment for HSMC Foster animals (e.g., heart worm treatment, skin allergies, vaccines). We provide up to $200 per medical emergency through Angel Funds allocated to local veterinarian clinics annually.
One Year Free HSMC Pet Membership One year free Pet Membership from the Humane Society of McDonough County for anyone adoplng a pet from the McDonough County Animal Shelter
Promo?ng Adop?on of Animals at the McDonough County Animal Shelter We conlnue to promote shelter animals through the weekly Find Your Best Friend at the Shelter posters. We provide The Voice with photographs of available shelter cats and dogs for their monthly Adopt a Pet Page. We provide updates on available animals and their adoplon stories on the HSMC Facebook page.
Promo?ng Adop?on of Animals at the McDonough County Animal Shelter In recognilon of the need for shelter dogs to exercise and be socialized with people and other dogs, we constructed a second dog play area at the shelter. We purchased the fencing and labor with donated directed funds for shelter improvement. Dan CurLs (Habitat for Humanity) contributed talent and materials toward construclon of agility equipment for the play area. The City of Macomb contributed the pea gravel for the new play area. Duke, a handsome American Pitbull, enjoys the agility equipment!
Ini?a?ves in Partnership with the McDonough County Animal Shelter to Promote Adop?on of Hard to Place Animals We promoted the adoplon of older and physical disabled animals from the Shelter and worked with the Helping Paws Project in Springfield, Illinois to find homes for two elderly chocolate labs. Missy
Ini?a?ves in Partnership with the McDonough County Animal Shelter to Promote Adop?on of Hard to Place Animals Whoopie who is both blind and elderly found her home with a resident of the Wesley Village neighborhood. Whoopie
Ini?a?ves in Partnership with the McDonough County Animal Shelter to Promote Adop?on of Hard to Place Animals Snowy Snowy and GrouchElla, both deaf cats found loving homes as well. GrouchElla (background)
Ini?a?ves in Partnership with the McDonough County Animal Shelter to Promote Adop?on of Hard to Place Animals Thelma & Louise, two senior female Beagles, came to the shelter with a very strong bond to each other. To keep them together, we sponsored a reduced adoplon fee if adopted as a pair. One week later they were ADOPTED!
Promoted Adop?ons of Pit Mixes at the McDonough County Animal Shelter This fall we sponsored a porlon of the adoplon fees for Tracy, Socks and Buddy pit mixes that had been at the shelter for quite awhile. This brought their adoplon fee down to $50, which includes spay/neuter, vaccines, rabies, and microchip. All were adopted into loving homes. Tracy Adopted!
