5 DOGS SEPERATION ANXIETY Common Symptoms & Treatment One of the greatest joys of dog ownership is the tight bond we experience and encourage with our dogs. However, if your dog becomes too reliant or dependant on you, dog separation anxiety can occur when you and your dog are apart. Separation anxiety in dogs is an enormous problem for around 10% of all puppies and older dogs. Somewhat ironically, problems related to separation anxiety are the major cause for dogs ending up in animal shelters. I wish I could say canine separation anxiety is an easy fix, but in many cases it is a very difficult problem to overcome. Look at it from the dog s perspective: To your dog you are the most important thing in his/her world. Dogs are pack animals who are very sociable creatures and thrive on company for many reasons. Your dog would spend every bit of his life with you if he could. So it s only natural that when you go out, your dog experiences varying degrees of distress or anxiety. He becomes confused, doesn t know where you are going, why can t he be with you and if you will be coming back to him. When the two of you are separated all he wants is to be reunited with his pack which is you. Punishment is NEVER the answer to solving separation Anxiety in dogs! Does Your Dog Suffer From SA? There s every chance your dog is suffering from separation anxiety disorder rather than another dog behaviour problem. If 1. Your dog gets really worked up & anxious when you are preparing to leave the house. Actions such as picking up you car keys, or putting on your coat can be enough to trigger the behaviour. 2. Your dog engages in inappropriate behaviour only when you are separated. Such as excessive barking, whimpering, urinating inside & destructive behaviour are common symptoms of canine separation anxiety. 3. Your dog follows you everywhere you go and immediately becomes distressed if he can t be near you. 4. When you arrive home your dog is over the top with his greeting and takes a while to calm down. Why Do Dogs Experience SA? There are many theories on this one. In some cases the cause or trigger can be pinpointed to a particular event, but often there appears to be no explanation for the dog Separation Anxiety to commence. What I can say is that SA in dogs regularly occurs. 1. Straight after a change in routine. Such as your work hours changing or a family member leaving home. Remember dogs are creatures of habit and any changes can be very unsettling and confusing to them. 2. If you have been on holiday or unemployed for some time and have been spending heaps of time at home with your dog. As a result of this when you go back to work your dog becomes anxious and distressed. 3. Unfortunately dogs rescued from shelters contribute a highly disproportionate number of dogs with separation anxiety cases. 4. After your dog experiences a traumatic event while on his own. If a thunderstorm lashes your home while your dog is alone, this can be a trigger for SA in the future your dog will associate your absence with the traumatic event. 5. If your dog is rarely left alone and becomes overly reliant on his human family golden retrievers are very susceptible to this type of separation anxiety in dogs. 6. when you move house to a new neighbourhood. 6 How does SA in Dogs Manifest? Barking Licking Chewing Panic Attacks Inappropriate Urination Self mutilation diarrhoea Excessive Salivation Jumping through windows Whining Destructive Behaviour Howling Digging House soiling Escaping Loss of Appetite Vomiting crying What Can You Do To Help Your Dog Overcome SA? Separation Anxiety treatment; The treatment administered to your dog s SA problem depends on its cause and severity. A mild case of SA in dogs will be easily fixed by applying some of the proven methods listed below. More severe cases will take lots of time, commitment and possibly a visit to your vet for some medication. Commence these techniques as soon as you identify SA to be a problem. The golden rule is that you must educate your dog to accept the fact that sometimes you will need to be apart from each other. The earlier you start getting your dog used to this fact the easier it will be for both of you. Ensure that your dog feels safe and comfortable when you are away from him. Provide plenty of fresh water & clean, warm bedding for you dog. Be sure to give your dog plenty of exercise when you are around. On leash walks, a run in the park with other dogs & some obedience training both at your local obedience club and at home will ensure your dog is happy and stimulated. Importantly it can also mean your dog will rest while you are away instead of tearing up the garden. Provide some appealing dog toys, and or raw bones to help occupy his time. Kongs stuffed with frozen treats are a favourite with some dogs. I give my dogs a cue word (Be Good) this means to my dogs that every time I say this cue they know I will be back soon. This cue word is said consistently from puppy hood onwards to old age. Your dog will associate this cue with you returning and helps minimize their stress. It can also be handy when leaving your dog at the vet or kennels. It s Your Job To Provide Your dog With Everything Required To Ensure He Is Happy, Well Balanced & Worn Out! Leave your dog a blanket or a piece of clothing with your scent on it. This may comfort a distressed dog make sure it is something you don t mind being torn up though. Try feeding your dog his main meal just as your leaving the house. You could try hiding some of the food around the yard, which will give him/her something to do while your away. Leave your dog in a safe and secure crate or dog run. This has a twofold effect, it provides comfortable den like area where your dog will feel comfortable and it means it means your dog won t be able to act out many of the problem behaviours listed above. Be sure that your dog is completely happy in this area before you go and leave him for any length of time. I don t crate my dogs for SA purposes, but many trainers recommend this technique. Crating should never be used for extended periods day in day out. (crate training should be started early in the pups life and have him associate the crate as a safe and pleasant place for him to be and be able to wait quietly until you let him out). Attend obedience training at your local obedience club teaching the basic commands like sit, stay, down. Be a strong but fair leader or Alpha Dog in your owner-dog relationship, your dog will respect you for it. When you establish yourself as the trusted leader, your dog will respect your right to come and go as you please. I appreciate this one is difficult for many dog owners. Don t let your dog get too clingy and dependant on you every second you are together. Little by little teach your dog to be on his WK&ODC Inc Newsletter Issue 72 6

7 own when you are home by crating him perhaps in the lounge while you are cooking in the kitchen. Prove to him that its not a bad thing to be separated from you, give him his favourite treat in another room and leave him there for a while. When he is quiet and calm go and give him some praise, make it clear you are happy with him. You can also practice your down, stay obedience training for this purpose. Never go and let your dog out when he is crying, he will associate crying with getting let out and thereby reinforcing the negative behaviour you are trying to stop. Pay little or no attention to your dog when you are preparing to leave the house. Ignore him for 10 minutes and then slip out the door with no fuss. Same thing when you come home. Ignore him for 10 minutes. When he is calm and quiet you can initiate some contact you don t want him to believe that his behaviour (barking, whining etc) has contributed to bringing you back home. Don t inadvertently reward his behaviour by giving a big over the top greeting every time you arrive home. For more information on solving this very complex behavioural problems such as separation anxiety or other things go to the link below Taken from Dog Training Central - The Annual Gary Nash fun run was again held on our grounds with our club supporting the event & its organizers on the 24 th February. The volunteers were small in number and with many jobs allocated to our team as part of our sponsored support I have to say we did a fantastic job. The canteen staff was literally run off their feet from the get go to the end, sausages & onion in bread was a huge success with Jean & Janet having trouble keeping up with demand. Maree at the front counter was inundated with customers after sustenance, drinks & icy poles for the kids after they had run their respective races. John our gofer kept things running smoothly in the canteen. The outside crew of Kevin, Patricia, Ozzie & Bronwyn were running to keep water supplied at the water stations & with demand higher than supply had them trying to keep up. Other duties were cutting up fruit, making what seemed like thousands of jam sandwiches for those competing on the day. There were a few issues we had to deal with but the team dealt with them and in true hardworking fashion got on with the job I think the team are to be congratulated on their efforts. The fun run this year it was 3,000 competitors both adults & children double the amount on last year. I think our team did a fantastic job of supporting the organizers and servicing the participants, taking $1025 at the canteen. We were so busy I didn t even get to take any photos this year. It would have been nice to see more than 8 members of our club helping out for this event considering it s a fundraiser to benefit you all, so maybe the next event you might consider helping the team, because as we all know many hands make light work WELL DONE to those involved. 8 On Thursday 6 th February four club members accompanied by nine dogs set off on the eight hour trek to Bermagui on the south coast of NSW. Each year in February the Bega Valley Club and the Sapphire Coast Club put on a bonanza of conformation shows and obedience trials. The Bermi week has for many years been a Mecca for trailers with competitors coming from all over NSW, Victoria, Queensland, ACT and occasionally SA. The week becomes like home week where we all catch up with one another chatting around the rings, visiting one another s holiday rental houses, having coffee down the street, enjoying a meal at the pub or the country club. In between the socialising we take our dogs into the ring. John & Charlie catch up on the news Bermi has been known to serve up the most awful weather. One year it will be horribly hot and humid and the next it will be so wet that the grounds are largely under water. (I have been told that there has been a lot of work done on the oval s drainage over the past year.) This year we were blessed with mild to warm weather and one day of mizzle that didn t prevent some spectacular sunburn, however. A number of trials were held in the evening so that helps in terms of temperature and humidity. Raglan: Mr Innocent The first weekend there were shows and trials on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Tuesday was a day off, and then on Wednesday there was an Open show plus a double Rally Obedience trial. Thursday was another day off followed by shows and obedience trials on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you re after points or passes then it is definitely worth the trip. If you re after a holiday by the sea and a catch up with friends then it s definitely worth the trip! The four of us had a great week. We socialised, we helped the local economy along (how could we resist all those sales!) and we checked out the local produce and crafts. When we weren t at the oval we read and watched Sochi slats helped along by wine and cheese (from Tilba, of course). Kinya enjoys a coast grass roll Good book, Jeannie? 9 Dusty looking beautiful Oh, and the results I guess I should mention them. Jean and John s young Peke, Dusty, was up against a champion and a grand-champion so he didn t collect any points, but all that practice means he is now going around the ring like a pro. Janet s Rain and Rosie did ok in the conformation ring, both gaining some ribbons. Janet s and Pagan came oh so close to several obedience and Rally O passes we need to work on the stays and scare away all stray birds. Raglan was both very naughty and very good in obedience but made up for it in Rally O with a couple of passes. As for the rest, well,.what happens in Bermi stays in Bermi! Submitted by Patricia Looker Janet working with Pagan in obedience, Rosie & Rain in the Conformation rings WK&ODC Inc Newsletter Issue 72 9
