I must say it has been a tough year for us all: we have our daily dramas but most importantly you have all stayed true to your goals to continue with the Club s growth. At the same time you all need to ensure that family comes first, as well as your health. I know some of you have had health and family issues during the year as the Club continued to move forward. We are thinking especially of Maree at this time who has been sadly missed during the latter part of the year due to illness and her father also being unwell. It has been a tough time for Maree but I know she is a strong person and will be back with us in the new year. Thanks also to our Council staff who have maintained our grounds throughout the year. Thanks also to all those who assisted with setting the rings up. It s good to have such a great team to ensure all this work is done in a timely manner. The preparation for the canteen takes a great team of people prior to any events we hold. Our canteen makes us a handsome profit for our efforts each time, so thanks to those members who donated cakes etc: Special Thanks to Leanne Greaves who has assisted with the canteen as well. President reports are always full of thank you messages because of the important teams involved in running a club such as ours. So it is important to thank all those tireless members who work so hard over the entire year in preparation for these events. We were lucky to have pleasant weather for shows and trials this year and everything ran so smoothly because of the effort prior to these events in the planning and hard work by all our teams. Congratulations to all those who gained qualification and titles in our trials and shows during the year and many of you who have since gained titles with your canine companion. Make sure you all pass on your successes to Patricia (in Maree s absence) so they can be included in the Club newsletter not just the triumphs but let s hear about the events we go to and not win because it s not all about winning, it s about having fun with our canine friends. Most importantly welcome to all the new members during the year and congratulations to all those members who have progressed through the various classes. By the time you get this Newsletter I m sure most of you would be aware of the work that has gone into our Strategic plan for the next 5 years. Our aim is to have this endorsed and dealt with on the 27 th of November A copy is available for your perusal at the Club at any time. It is that time of year once again when we all look forward to Christmas: the chance to sit back and enjoy some quality time with family and friends and not worry about the Club. Then in the New Year you need to think about your new committee to run your Club for the ensuing twelve months. There is a nomination form in this newsletter for you to nominate who you would like to continue with the growth of this great Club. Also, don t forget your membership renewals. Merry Christmas Kevin Felmingham President Kevin & Bronson concentrating hard on a Novice Rally-O course (which they passed!)

3 Christmas Safety and Pets Christmas is family time and for most of us our pets are part of family celebrations. Nearly all of my friends have a little something wrapped for their fur-friend on Christmas day and include their pets in their festivities. With all the hustle of preparation, the joys of family and friends arriving, exchanging gifts and finally sitting down to enjoy festive fare and drinks, it is easy to not notice the mischief, or trouble that the family pet may get up to. With a little planning and supervision mishaps and mayhem can be avoided this Christmas. There is nothing more enticing to a cat than a tree to climb and how easy is that symmetrical pine tree plastic or real. The trouble is that the trees were meant to have a star on top, not a 3kg cat, and the cat and tree will likely come toppling over. Cats rarely listen to requests not to do something so it is best to keep the tree and the cat in separate rooms or to make sure the tree is secured. Tree decorations look like dangly toys to cats, and some dogs. If you have pets it is better to use unbreakable decorations rather than glass baubles. The glass used to make the baubles is very fine and splinters can be hard to remove from pads, or worse if swallowed. Tinsel is glittery and just begs to be played with. However it is usually made of metal or plastic and can cause problems if swallowed. Gifts under the tree? Now what self respecting dog could resist opening a gift or two? Not only will this wreck your gift-giving but the contents of some gifts may be harmful to the dog. Make sure that pets are securely confined when guests are arriving. If young children are visiting, supervise your pets at all times or confine them away from the children. Children can over stimulate pets, especially at a time when the children themselves are likely to be over-excited. Guests sometimes neglect to shut gates and doors. Make sure your pets are secure and cannot escape your property. Well-meaning people often share their Christmas dinner with the dog but be do be careful. Rich food, or even just overindulging, is just as bad for dogs as it is for us - it can cause tummy upsets and pancreatitis. Cooked bones can splinter and get caught in the mouth or gut. Onions, both raw and cooked are toxic to dogs as are macadamia nuts. Chocolate is also toxic to dogs (particularly cooking chocolate) and should never be given. During all the festivity do remember to check on your pets and make sure that they are cool, comfortable and have fresh water. I suggest giving them a safe treat and putting them somewhere quiet during meal time. This article was found on Dr Katrina s website at Some club members have been busy learning how to teach their dogs to correctly negotiate the various pieces of agility equipment (the easy bit) and teaching themselves how to become proficient handlers, which is the far harder skill. A series of three four-hour sessions has been run for two levels of skill. In the Beginners workshops, handlers and dogs have been introduced to each obstacle and some basic handling skills. By the end of the three workshops, dogs and handlers will be able to string several obstacles together in mini courses. Now the task for the handlers is to refine their dog s performance and improve their own handling skills so they will be ready to enter agility and jumping trials next year. The other series of workshops was held for those folk in the region who are already trialing their dogs in agility and jumping. Here the aim was to correct errors in the dog s performance of the obstacles but mainly to work on the handler s skills. I don t know that we sorted out all the flapping arms and multiple left feet, but we had a lot of fun trying! Next year more workshops will be run, so if you are interested in training your dog in agility watch the newsletter and the website for details. Patricia Looker WK&ODC Inc. 6 Heat Stroke in Dogs Heat stroke is an emergency and requires immediate treatment. This article was found on the web at Because dogs do not sweat (except to a minor degree through their foot pads), they do not tolerate high environmental temperatures as well as humans do. Dogs depend upon panting to exchange warm air for cool air. But when air temperature is close to body temperature, cooling by panting is not an efficient process. Common situations that can set the stage for heat stroke in dogs include: Being left in a car in hot weather Exercising strenuously in hot, humid weather Being a brachycephalic breed, especially a Bulldog, Pug, or Pekingese Suffering from a heart or lung disease that interferes with efficient breathing Being muzzled while put under a hair dryer Suffering from a high fever or seizures Being confined on concrete or asphalt surfaces Being confined without shade and fresh water in hot weather Having a history of heat stroke Heat stroke begins with heavy panting and difficulty breathing. The tongue and mucous membranes appear bright red. The saliva is thick and tenacious, and the dog often vomits. The rectal temperature rises to 104 to 110 F (40 to 43.3 C). The dog becomes progressively unsteady and passes bloody diarrhea. As shock sets in, the lips and mucous membranes turn gray. Collapse, seizures, coma, and death rapidly ensue. Treatment: Emergency measures to cool the dog must begin at once. Move the dog out of the source of heat, preferably into an air-conditioned building. Take his rectal temperature every 10 minutes. Mild cases may be resolved by moving the dog into a cool environment. If the rectal temperature is above 104 F, begin rapid cooling by spraying the dog with a garden hose or immersing him in a tub of cool water (not ice water) for up to two minutes. Alternatively, place the wet dog in front of an electric fan. Cool packs applied to the groin area may be helpful, as well as wiping his paws off with cool water. Monitor his rectal temperature and continue the cooling process until the rectal temperature falls below 103 F (39 C). At this point, stop the cooling process and dry the dog. Further cooling may induce hypothermia and shock. Following an episode of heat stroke, take your dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Heat stroke can be associated with laryngeal edema (swelling of the throat). This seriously worsens the breathing problem and may require an emergency tracheostomy. An injection of cortisone before the onset of respiratory distress may prevent this problem. Other consequences of hyperthermia include kidney failure, spontaneous bleeding, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. These complications can occur hours or days later. Tests conducted by Melbourne s Metropolitan Ambulance Service on a 29 0 day with the car s air conditioning having cooled the interior to a comfortable 20 0 showed it took just 10 minutes for the temperature to more than double to In a further 10 minutes it had tripled to a deadly Source: RSPCA Victoria. 7 Dog Bites - prevention It is always with great sadness when I hear stories of children who have been bitten by dogs. It always seems so unnecessary and more often than not the dog is blamed when the responsibility really lies with the owner who has failed to train and socialise their dog properly or the parents of the child who has not been supervising properly. Owning a dog can be a wonderful experience for a child. Not only do dogs provide unconditional love and friendship, but they also teach children responsibility and give them an understanding of life. Young children are at the greatest risk of being bitten by their own dog or a friend s dog in or around their own home, whereas older children and adults are more likely to be bitten in public places like parks. Remember, any dog can bite- even the most laid back and trustworthy. A dog may bite because it is scared and all its warning signals have been ignored. An easy-going dog may also bite if it is woken from a sleep and is disorientated and a dog that is great around the house may be very protective of its food or toys and bite if a child tries to take these away. There are a few golden rules to help minimise the risk of children (or adults!) being bitten by dogs: 1. Always ask the owner for permission before you pat a dog. Even the happiest looking golden retriever is capable of biting and no one should know better than the owner whether the dog is friendly or not. 2. Never pat a dog on top of the head or with an open palm. Both these gestures can be seen as threatening and the dog may act defensively. Instead, approach the dog from an angle and offer your hand as a fist allowing the dog to sniff it before tickling under the chin. If the dog doesn t sniff or backs away, ignore him and walk slowly away. 3. Never approach a dog that is eating or chewing a bone. Dogs can become very protective of their food and children must be taught that this is the dog s private time and they must be left alone. 4. Never wake a sleeping dog as this may frighten him and he may bite defensively to protect himself. 5. Don t play chasings with dogs. As children get excited and squeal, dogs also get wound up and join in the fun. The trouble is, they often accidentally knock children over and don t understand when the game is over. 6. Always supervise young children with dogs, as they often think of a dog as another toy and pull its tail, ears, etc. Some dogs will tolerate this but many act defensively because this is their way of telling a child to leave it alone. 7. Choose your dog wisely. Talk to your vet about the right breed of dog for your family and make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. Temperament is partly inherited, so be sure to meet the parents of your puppy and be comfortable with their behaviour. 8. Socialise and train your dog. I cannot stress this enough. A well behaved dog is a delight to own and it is your responsibility to raise a dog that you are proud to take out in public and who will obey basic commands such as SIT, STAY, DROP and COME. 9. Train your child too! Teach them basic rules such as not to pick up your dog or pat on the face. Children need to know that there are certain times when touching the dog is out of bounds. 10. Seek professional help if necessary. If your dog shows any signs of aggression such as growling or protection of food or toys, it is worth seeking advice from an animal behaviour specialist or professional dog trainer. These problems can often be stopped if managed early but can become serious if allowed to continue. It is not worth the risk and will help give you peace of mind. This article was found on Dr Katrina s website at Australians spend about $3.6 billion a year on dogs and about $1.4 billion on cats. Of our eight million households, nearly 2.9 million own a dog and 1.85 million own a cat that s around 16 dogs and 10 cats for every 100 people. The US and UK share this trend of dogs being more popular, but in Europe there ore 60 million cats and 56 million dogs. WK&ODC Inc. Newsletter Issue No 70 page 7 of 11
