2 Page 2 Shepherd News From the Editor Presidents Report The Royal Adelaide Show is on as I write this report with the German Shepherds being shown on Friday 2 nd September. Well done to those members that competed, I m sure you enjoyed your results and the day. Wondering where to go to get show results? CLICK HERE Fay Stokes would like to pass on her apologies to all the members that entered the show where she adjudicated at our recent members competition. Fay was quite unwell on the day but as is Fay s way, she continued on regardless and she hopes that all competitors had a great day. I would like to draw everyone s attention to the notice printed in this Shepherd News regarding parking on the grounds when events are held. It should now be quite clear to all as to what is allowed. There are a great deal of activities that take place on Saturdays and Sundays so we have to make the best of it and work together. On the October Long weekend we will be having a working bee on the Saturday to clean around the club rooms, windows and storage area so if you can assist between 9am and 2pm that would be greatly appreciated. We will also put on a BBQ for the helpers so please let our Secretary know if you can assist in any way on that day. The Committee and club would like to send our best wishes out to members and family that are having health issues. We sincerely wish you all a speedy recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Enjoy Family and friends and especially your DOGS. If any child cannot solely control (hold) the animal they are exhibiting they may be asked to leave the ring. No adults will be permitted in the ring

8 Page 8 Bone Inflammation (Panosteitis) in Dogs Panosteitis refers to a short-lived (self-limiting) and painful condition characterized by limping and lameness. It is a condition that affects the long bones in the legs of young dogs, usually between the ages of 5 to 18 months. It can occur with any breed, but it is more common in medium- to large-sized dog breeds. The inflammation can affect one or more of the dog's limbs, making it challenging and painful to move around. With treatment, the inflammation can be reduced and the animal can regain full function and activity. Panosteitis can affect both dogs and cats. Symptoms and Types Lameness is often characterized by trouble walking on the front legs, as there is often a deep pain associated with the bones. While the inflammation is more common in the front legs, it is also found in the back legs. Some dogs also exhibit fever, depression, weight loss, and anorexia. Additionally, if the condition is not corrected, some dogs may experience loss of muscle mass (atrophy) over time with the lack of muscle usage. Causes Overall, the causes of panosteitis are unknown. While lameness can affect any breed at any age, it is most common in younger breeds, and in particular, the German Shepherd. The lameness may occur on its own or it may be accompanied with other orthopedic diseases. Diagnosis Joint pain can last from days to months, and will range from mild to severe. Your veterinarian will examine your dog to rule out underlying conditions other than inflammation of the bones. X-ray imaging and blood analysis will be used to search for any underlying conditions. In most cases, the inflammation will be the cause of the pain and can be reduced with drug treatment. Treatment In some cases, anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed and administered to help with the pain and to encourage walking. Steroids can also assist in the reduction of inflammation in the bones. Limited activity will help to reduce your dog s pain. Allowing your pet time to recover, and time for the joints and bones to heal, however, will not reduce the speed of recovery. It is recommended that you take your dog to be re-checked every two to four weeks for progress, as well as to detect if there are any more serious underlying medical issues that have been causing the problems. Living and Management It is important to observe your pet and work to reduce their overall pain levels through reduction of activity, pain medication, and environment. The pain may last only a few days, or it could last for several months. In rarer cases, juvenile bone (orthopedic) disease can develop. Prevention: There are currently no known preventive measures for this medical condition.

10 Page 10 DIFFICULT DOGS Difficult dogs can be categorized under the following headings: Aggressive dog to dog Aggressive dog to man The fear biter Timid Stubborn Dominant Unstable The Head Instructor must be made aware of dogs in the above categories. AGGRESSIVE Dog to dog When a dog makes an attack on another dog, the handler and the attacking dog must immediately be moved away from the other dog, otherwise aggression will be built up more and more in both dogs. It must be realized that the handler of the attacking dog is the one who must carry out the correction to the offending dog, quickly, firmly and without malice towards the other dog or handler. If after this the dog that continues to show aggression be removed from class and referred to the Head Instructor. On individual basis in conjunction with the Head Instructor, a situation can be set up where the aggressive dog will be subjected to the approach of another dog. Be sure that the slip chain and lead are strong enough to stand sudden jerks on them. At the instant (not before and not after) that the aggressor shows a sign of an attack, its handler must immediately correct the dog, commencing with a sharp jerk to the point of being severe of the slip chain and loud voice command NO. The correction given should be severe enough to give the dog a disagreeable experience. AGGRESSIVE Dog to man One must realize that this dog intends to hurt a person in the only way he knows; by biting. It is only fair treatment that this dog must be severely corrected prior to lunging. This situation requires the expertise of a Head Instructor and each dog s case assessed and handled individually. THE FEAR BITER Realize that this dog will attack only when cornered or will make a sneak attack as a person is moving away. It is motivated by fear. This dog is, in most cases, a lost cause and should be immediately referred to the Head Instructor. TIMID This dog is also motivated by fear. In most situations it will not bite but will do all in its power to retreat from the approach of a stranger, generally by crouching, trembling and hiding behind the handler s legs. Whatever the cause will probably never be known, some reasons are: Isolation from an early age No socialization Hereditary Over-correction at an early age Maltreatment This dog is usually a lost cause and MUST NOT be subject to stress. Care, patience and lots of love may reinforce some of the lost confidence STUBBORN AND/OR DOMINANT This dog is Pack Leader and is boss of the handler although most handlers will not admit it. Until the handler changes his attitude, he will not overcome this problem. In enforcing his will over the dog, the handler will have to be much more physical and vocal in his handling.

11 Electronic Issue Page 11 UNSTABLE For no obvious reason a dog that changes performance from good to bad constantly and without cause. Most likely a physical defect that is not recognizable. 16 GROUND RULES These rules apply to all handlers during training sessions and have been formulated for the welfare of you and your dog. Any Club member, or any person guilty of unseemly conduct or acts harmful to the club, may be asked to leave the Training area. They may also be dealt with by the Committee of The GSDC of S A Inc. under clause 6, and relative by-laws of the Clubs Constitution. Any dog which is sick WILL NOT be permitted onto the Club grounds. Dogs who have suffered a CONTAGIOUS DISEASE WILL NOT be allowed on to the grounds until 5 weeks after being cleared by a veterinarian (a vets certificate may be required). Puppies should not be brought out onto the Club grounds under the age of 8 weeks or at least 2 weeks after they have been inoculated for HEPATITIS, DISTEMPER AND PARVOVIRUS ( vaccination certificate may be required). Bitches in season are not permitted on the grounds unless at a recognised Club event. The use of switches, spiked collars or whips is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN ON THE CLUB GROUNDS. Members shall not treat their dog in a manner which may reflect badly on the Club. Dogs are NOT to be taken off-lead or left unattended, except on the directives, or under the supervision of a Class Instructor. The handlers of dogs which foul the Club grounds, will be responsible for cleaning up same, with the equipment provided. The Head Instructor has the authority to permit the use of a muzzle or training devices, as required in special cases. The use of the equipment is to be under supervision, and its use on the grounds, other than above, is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Dogs under the age of 12 months ARE NOT permitted to use jump equipment higher than 400 mm, or longer than 800 mm. Pursuant of the Health act "Dogs" ARE NOT permitted inside the Clubrooms. In the interest of safety and health, and in consideration of others, parents are required to super-vise the behaviour of their children. The Clubrooms and Toilets MUST NOT be used as playing areas. In the interests of public health the Clubrooms and the verandah area are NON-SMOKING areas. TRAINING HEAT POLICY If the forecast temperature is predicted to be 38 degrees or above on channel 9 weather at 6pm the night before training, (Wednesday nights or Sunday s), all training will be cancelled. Appropriate foot wear must be worn at ALL times when handling / double handling dogs on the Club grounds. Bare feet, thongs, slip on shoes, high heels, sandals or crocs and shoes with metal-spiked (covered or non covered) soles are not suitable foot wear and members wearing any of the above will be asked to leave the training area.
