Entlefest Entlebook Supplement November 2012 Best in Specialty Show 1
Entlefest 2012 By Kathy St. Onge Entlefest 2012 was held at the Olympia Resort in Oconomowoc Wisconsin. And yes, it is hard to pronounce but the facility was worth it! Everything - hotel, continuing education, dog fair and shows were all under one roof with no reason to go out except for shopping! The Resort is in a pleasant green setting with a large ski hill in the background. Ok, to us flat landers its a good size ski hill. The Californians laughed saying "that's a ski hill?" But I believe they all enjoyed the Wisconsin cheese and Landjager sausage! Landjager was one of the many tasty items Jane Torma supplied in the Hospitality Room. She had other local treats and authentic Swiss items including delicious Swiss cookies, Swiss apples, Wisconsin cheese, and Kringles. The weather was nice and the schedule was full. It wouldn't be Entlefest without a FULL schedule! Thursday was a great day for NEMDA's (BCOE) Breeders. Kathleen Kinney and Jan Vincent provided essential education including structure and movement. Friday started off with CEBA Temperament testing which was held outdoors with participants and onlookers enjoying the morning. The Dog Fair was something new we added this year. The Dog Fair was comprised of experienced people at tables sharing their knowledge about different dog related services. Chris Bach presented a behavior educational seminar after lunch. The seminar was followed by a conformation Handling Workshop given by Barbara House. Judges Education was also offered and run by Jan. Nine judges attended. After dinner we had our annual Member Meeting and Raffle. The Raffle had some great prizes for the lucky winners. Thanks to all of you that donated items! And to Debra Midgely for running it. Saturday began with our National Specialty Show. Rally and Obedience took place after Conformation. The show was followed by an Agility Workshop. The Awards Dinner and Annual Auction both took place Saturday evening. Ribbons were given to new Champions. The Auction offered many items to bid on including great baskets, dog items and of course a beautiful quilt made by Jan Vincent which brought $420! Thank you Jan, everyone who donated items and everyone who bought items at the Auction. Debra and Tom Midgely truly did an amazing job. Also thanks to Ken St. Onge our Auctioneer. We all laughed so hard! It was like a comedy night. On Sunday a Triebball Demo and Workshop was held. It was a first experience for many of us and a lot of fun. A Carting Demo and Workshop followed. 2
Many people contributed their time and talents to make this year's Entlefest a success. I want to especially thank my Co-Chair Joyce MacKay. Joyce put in a lot of time and work. She is quite involved in her local dog events, classes and clubs and she had many contacts that all came through for us. Thank you to all the Committee Chairs and helpers. Thank you Rebecca Hahn for all your help from a distance and to Linda Bingham (and family) for a terrific job on the Photo Contest. Thanks to our judges Bev Capstick, Evie Sullivan and Elmer Willems. You were all so kind, knowledgeable and patient. Mrs. Capstick and Mrs. Sullivan joined us for Saturday night dinner, auction and fun. And let's not forget to thank all the husbands/significant others that supported and helped us! I hope you enjoy the Entlefest 2012 articles and photos. Next year's Entlefest will be held in Gleneden Beach, Oregon at the beautiful Salishan Resort on Labor Day weekend. The dates are August 29th - September 2nd. Mark your calendars, you don't want miss it. Hope to see you there! Job Well Done By Tina Lilledoll As usual, Entlefest was a ton of fun and full of all sorts of activities for Entles and their owners. A big round of applause for this year s Entlefest Chair Kathy St. Onge and Co-Chair Joyce MacKay, along with many others who helped make Entlefest a big success. Friday morning Entlefest attendees walked into the main show room and were greeted by the happy faces of Jami Lockhart and Kathy and Ken St. Onge and given a nice welcome bag decorated with the Entlefest 2012 logo, full of all sorts of goodies. Many thanks to Anna Wallace for putting the bags together and to all those who donated. As their eyes scanned the main showroom, they were dazzled by the decorative talents of Deborah Midgley, who not only ordered and displayed the beautiful show ribbons, but did an incredible job of fundraising and creating amazing themed gift baskets for the yearly raffle. At the far end of the room, they were treated to the delights of Entlelauden... an entleowner s Christmas wish list come true. Yes, the stage was set for an Entle of a good time! 4 2012 National Specialty Show By Kathy St. Onge and Tina Lilliedoll For those not familiar with Dog Show terminology, a National Specialty Show is a dog show which is specific to a single breed, unlike an all-breed show that is open to all breeds of dogs. A Best in Show win at a National Specialty Show is tremendously prestigious, because it usually attracts serious fanciers of that breed from across the nation who come to compete again others of their breed in Conformation and Performance events. In Conformation show dogs are judged on how closely they conform to the established breed type for their breed, as described in a breed s individual breed standard. Conformations show(s) are a venue for showcasing breeding stock, so dogs that compete cannot be spayed or neutered. Our National Specialty Show was judged by AKC judge Beverly Capstick. It was a great honor to have Mrs. Capstick judge. The Best of Breed competition was a site to behold with 7 Specials (dogs that have earned their Championship title), Winner s Dog (Best non-champion male dog), Winner s Bitch (Best non-champion female) and Best Veteran. The 2012 National Specialty Show winners were as follows - Best in Specialty Show Best in Specialty Show - GCH JUMANJI V BRUNSWICK RN Breeder: Rebecca Hahn Owners: Neil & Tina Lilliedoll, Rebecca Hahn Best of Opposite Sex - CH URSULA VON ADHEM Breeder: Jan Vincent Owner: Kathleen Kinney Best of Winners & Winners Dog - PERPERTUALLY SIRIUS V ADHEM Breeder: Tory Devey Owner: Gerry Delengowski Select Dog - CH APPLECREEK S SIGMUND Breeder: Sarah Puckitt Owners: David & AlenaSumner Select Bitch & Best Veteran - AMIRA OF WILDHORN Breeder: Kathleen Kinney Owner: Kathleen Kinney Best of Opposite Sex Winners Bitch Neva of Wildhorn Breeder: Kathleen Kinney Owner: Kathleen Kinney and Debbie Dayton Reserve Dog - Wildhorn von Adhem Breeder: Jan Vincent Owner: Anna Wallace Reserve Bitch Liberty Run s Dash of Sass Breeder: Anna Wallace Owner: Anna Wallace Best Stud Dog - Ch Jake v Brunswick Owners: Jami Lockhart & Brent Richard Best Brace - Ch Jake v Brunswick & Pettier von Adhem Owners: Jami Lockhart & Brent Richard Best of Winners 4

Most people recognize Obedience as a competition where dogs are asked to sit, down, stay, heel with precision and quickness. Rally is a newer addition and is somewhat like a course where dog/owner teams navigate various stations which can include, sitting, weaving through cones, right and left turns, and of course, sits and downs. AKC judge Elmer Willems oversaw the Trials activities. His friendly, low-key demeanor was a perfect fit for our group of entries some beginners, some for experienced. Results were: Beginner Novice B Ch Kipp of Wildhorn RN Owner: Anna Wallace Rally Advanced B Ch Imzadi Data v. Eagleheart RN BN OJ OAJ Owner: Joyce & Patrick MacKay *This award earned Data a new title. Way to go Data and Joyce! 5
Puppy Classes This year we had the pleasure of having AKC judge Evie Sullivan judge our Puppy Sweepstakes. This is a competition for puppies between the ages of 6 months and 18 months and classes are divided by sex. The winners receive a percentage of the entry fees. Points toward earning Championship titles are not given in this show. One puppy was awarded Best Puppy in Sweepstakes and received a one-of-a-kind handmade quilt from Jan Vincent. A puppy of the opposite sex was chosen as Best Opposite Sex Puppy. Who doesn t love watching puppies, or better yet, owner s trying to get their puppies to behave in all the excitement of Entlefest. This year s winners were Best in Sweepstakes - Liberty Run s A Rang A Tang Owner: Anna Wallace Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes - Xella- Excella von Kornried Owner: Jennifer Shaul Sweepstakes was followed by 4-6 month Beginner Puppy Competition which is a new AKC addition this year. Evie Sullivan was our judge for this class also. Best 4-6 Beginner Puppy Yosemite von Adhem Owner: Jan Vincent *You should have heard the cheers for this little pup. She stole our hearts. Judge s Ed Entlefest is a great opportunity for AKC Judges meet Entlebuchers, and have an opportunity to see them interact and participate in multiple activities. At Entlefest 2012 we had nine AKC Judges in addition to the Specialty, Puppy and CEBA Evaluators come to Entlefest. We appreciate the effort they made to attend!! We held a Judge s Ed Presentation on Friday afternoon. The presentation is comprised of two parts. The first is a classroom presentation on the history of the breed, and an in-depth discussion of their temperament and conformation. The second portion is a hands on where each of the Judges have the opportunity to go over each dog, watch them move around the ring, and then write a critique of their top four. The Judges also take a test on their knowledge of the Breed Standard and are Mentored ringside by one of our approved Breed Mentors during the Puppy and Specialty Shows. We also had an number of our Breeders and members attend the presentation, we LOVED having them attend, and appreciate their interest in learning more about the Breed Standard, as well as interacting with the Judges!! **The photo is of Yosemite von Adhem, and Evie Sullivan, AKC Judge 6
EntleFest in the Heartland Happenings Dog Fair The Dog Fair was part of Entlebucher University Day on Friday. It was a new twist on the general job fair concept. Many people offered feedback that it has been so hard choosing between the 1 hour seminar offerings and felt that they missed too many experiences scheduled opposite each other. We tried the Dog Fair in an effort to offer more experiences and increase value. There were 6 booth stations: Therapy Dogs, Make a Tug Toy, Grooming, Ask a Trainer, Essential Oils and K-9 Nosework. People could visit as many booths as they wanted, spending as much time as they wanted at each booth. The dog fair was also meant to be a more personal, relaxed and casual experience. It was very well received with lots of positive feedback and comments. We heard what worked well and learned how to make it even better if the EntleFest committee decides to do another Dog Fair. We welcome all feedback that will help us make the Dog Fair and other areas of EntleFest more enjoyable and successful. Tennis Balls for Prizes Another new activity this year was the limited tennis ball drawing (raffle). We sold 25 numbered tennis balls for $2/each. All 25 tennis balls were spread out inside one of the gated competition rings. Then we asked for tennis ball fanatic Entle volunteers from the audience. Our eager Entle volunteers went in, one by one to retrieve a tennis ball with a winning number. The person whose number matched the tennis ball got to pick a prize from the prize table. Entles kept fetching winners until all the prizes were gone. It was so much fun to watch! The Entles obviously loved the game while the audience was on the edge of their seats waiting to find out if their number would be retrieved. Some dogs grabbed a ball and started bringing it back but got distracted by the temptation of so many other tennis balls in play so many to choose from tennis balls everywhere Entle heaven some might say! We all wondered if any Entles would bring back multiple balls in one retrieve, but none did- that would have been even funnier. What a blast! Everyone was laughing and cheering on the Entle retrieving-prize-fetchers. The money raised went into a general NEMDA health fund. TDI/CGC This year we again offered opportunities to test for the AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen), TDI (Therapy Dog International) or a combo with both the CGC and TDI. Our evaluator, Bruce Meier came to us highly recommended with a wealth of experience and knowledge. Bruce has a passion for therapy work; his enthusiasm was contagious while his personality and approach helped put teams at ease creating an atmosphere for success! How exciting that every team entered in any test, passed with flying colors! For the first time, we opened up testing to participation from other breeds yet gave Entlebuchers first preference. In some areas of the Country, therapy dog tests are not always easy to get into because the tests are limited in numbers. A couple shelties and border collies joined us and their people were very grateful. Passing the TDI portion of the test makes teams eligible to get involved in various types of canine therapy work through the Therapy Dog International (TDI) Organization. See for more information NEMDA is proud to congratulate our new member Entlebucher/Human Team Ambassadors: Lucy & Bill Bingham CGC Hali & Linda Bingham both TDI & CGC Lexi & JoEllen Kerwin both TDI & CGC 7
Balthazar & Jane Torma both TDI & CGC Riley & Josette Kimes TDI Earl & Brian Shaul TDI Sigmund & David Sumner TDI Treibball & Carting Workshops Sunday we were treated to two very thorough, fun workshops by Sylvia Habermehl and her volunteers. First we learned about the urban herding activity called Treibball where dogs herd exercise balls instead of sheep, cattle or ducks. We received handouts and watched Sylvia and her Schnauzer Captain do a demo for us. All of us and our Entles had the opportunity to get up and participate in different stations that taught skills needed to play Treibball. It seemed like all the Entles had a great time and many showed natural talent! The Carting information and demo followed. We learned about cart sizing, safety, maneuvers and ways to take pleasure in carting even for those who never imagined competing. Sylvia brought fellow members from her local Carting Club and they were very generous giving us their time and talents! They answered questions, shared their joy for carting and offered many wonderful stories, experiences and tips. They also had great resources to help anyone interested learn how to get started and discover fun, purpose and exercise through the activity of carting. Handling Workshop This workshop is offered at Entlefests and is a great opportunity for those new to showing to learn the basics and be ready for the Specialty Show the following day. Those that are experienced can join in for practice and get some tips from the presenter. After all we are always learning! Professional Handler Barbara House gave a great handling workshop. 8
Breeder s Workshop and Roundtable By Jane Haley This was my second year attending the Breeder s Workshops and Roundtable, and again it was very high on my priority list when I made arrangements to attend this year. One of the highlights of attending Entlefest is the people, and of course, the Entles. Beginning with a breeders session, which is so inclusive for all in attendance, is indicative of the importance NEMDA places on the improvement of breeding practices and the selection of breeding stock. The first two guest presenters, Dawne Deeley and Debbie Dayton were fantastic both in their command of the subject, canine movement of the Entlebucher breed and pointers in choosing and evaluating our breeding stock. Their hands on approach, open discussion, and their active participation in handling Entles to best demonstrate their points, was a very rewarding aspect of the workshop. In addition to their presentation and demonstrations, they made themselves available over the course of the two days I attended Entlefest. Both Dawn and Debbie showed a sincere interest in the Entle breed and they emphasized high praise for the improvement of the breed over the past ten years and contributed this to the work and commitment of the NEMDA membership, especially the NEMDA Board. The other guest presenter, Karine Verstegen, DVM, PhD, DECAR, addressed the audience with a profile of her experiences and work in the field of breeding practices, and the importance of having a sound breeding management program in place to be successful. She talked about the sexual physiology of the male and female, methods of choosing the optimum time for mating, as well as artificial insemination using fresh chilled and frozen semen. She briefly spoke on the Ph Special project and progress to date. The more education and opportunities for discussion that are made available to the NEMDA membership, the better equipped we will be to improve the breed. We have a small gene pool, and our breeding success needs to expand the gene pool. Artificial insemination will contribute to this goal. More information will be welcomed on this topic, especially with respect to the future research and work on the NEMDA Ph Special project and any other related research/work with being carried out either nationally or internationally. There are a number of long-time, experienced breeders who are in full attendance at Entlefest and are most generous with their knowledge and experiences. The first year I attended I was fortunate enough to meet a number of these breeders. This year I had the opportunity to spend time with these breeders and to meet in person, for a first time, additional experienced breeders, many of whom over the past year have provided me with sound advice, excellent resources, information and support. This would not have been possible had I not attended the Entlefest Breeders Workshop. Attendance at these is one of the most valuable and enjoyable components of Entlefest. 9
Chris Bach s The Third Way By Leelee Stefanki & Becky Christiansen Chris Bach of Menomonee Falls, WI, was Saturday s featured presenter at Entlefest in the Heartland, as well as the lead evaluator for CEBA Temperament. Known throughout the United States and Canada for her training expertise, her program at Entlefest entitled THREE COMMON PROBLEMS, which we might add are common problems with Entlebuchers, was particularly appropriate and well attended. THREE COMMON PROBLEMS: unruly greeting behavior inappropriate barking pulling on leash Chris feels that training should be approached from two different standpoints: Prevention and Problem Solving. Prevention she says is easy. First off, one needs to be a good guide, one who takes responsibility for the safety and well-being of the dog. Second, this guide must use pro-active management, deciding how the dog will be confined when alone, how it will be managed outside of the home and how the dog will be exposed to the broader environment. More difficult is Problem Solving. You cannot teach a puppy what NOT to do! You can only teach what to do! Aroused states get you nothing. Calm states get you everything. Chris Bach, The Third Way. Remember: the dog is always blameless and perfect at being a dog the problem can never happen again a new response must be taught, proofed and practiced the new response must be cued before the problematic response can occur Chris showed us simple-to-make tools to help with training and demonstrated these tools and methods with her dog, Doozy. Finally, Chris reminds us Learning is taking place at all times except when a puppy is asleep! Chris Bach, The Third Way 10

Entlefest A first timer s perspective By James Morro Looking back on this year s Entlefest several important things really stand out. The dogs, of course, sell themselves. Getting a chance to meet with some of the best in the breed is an experience all on its own. Entlefest, however, is really about so much more than dogs. It s really getting to meet not only the dogs but the people who own them that really makes it such an engaging experience. Entlebucher owners really gave me a sense that a community of smart, caring, and intelligent dog owners are working towards something special with this breed. While no two owners, like no two dogs are they same, they share the same goal. They are dedicated to working together to develop better breeding, better training, and healthier, happier dogs. I feel fortunate as an individual to have gotten a chance to meet these proud and dedicated dog owners and am equally pleased to have welcomed a young Entlebucher into my life as well. I learned A LOT about my dog at Entlefest and it has made me a better, and more patient first time dog owner. I am also very happy to be a new NEMDA member. Larry and I look forward to seeing everyone at Entlefest 2013! Winter Squash Dog Muffin Recipe Ingredients: 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 1 1/2 cups winter squash, peeled and cubed 1/8 cup water 1 egg 1 tbsp corn oil 1/2 cup milk Instructions: 1. Place the squash, egg, oil and milk into a blender. 8. Blend into a smooth puree, stirring when needed to keep the mixture moving. 9. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the squash mixture. 10.Stir together until combined. 11.Spray a mini muffin pan with non stick cooking spray with flour. 12.Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, scoop generous amounts into each muffin cup. 13.Bake for 15 minutes. 14.Turn off the oven and let the muffins cool. Storing - This dog muffin recipe will keep in the fridge for about two weeks. You can freeze them for later enjoyment for up to 6 months. To decorate, let them thaw, or come to room temperature first. Yield - Using a mini muffin pan, you'll yield 24 little muffins.
