1 Kindergarten & First Grade Camps Half-Day Camps are $125 per week / $105 for UMNH Members 4-Day Sessions for $100 per week / $84 for UMNH Members Dino-ROAR Both Sessions Full Investigate dinosaurs and the world they lived in through hands-on projects and tours of our collections. Examine differences between meat and plant eating dinosaurs, make dino tracks, learn about new dino discovers and meet staff paleontologists. Take Flight Fly airplanes, spin helicopters and launch rockets! Learn about flight and measure how far your flying machine will travel. Experiment with balloons, kites and gliders while discovering how birds, planes, insects and rockets are able to stay in the air. Week 1 June :00 4:30 pm Week 6 July :30 am Noon Rock Hounds Polish your rock knowledge with a landslide of activities and experiments! Create stalactites and stalagmites and start your very own rock collection. Plus, identify, classify and sort rocks and minerals while studying examples throughout the Museum. Week 2 June :30 am Noon Week 10 August :00 4:30 pm Insect Introductions Meet insects face-to-face while learning about their amazing variety, investigating their life cycles, creating insect art, touring our Bugs Alive exhibit and participating in bug relay races. Listen to your heartbeat, make a map of your tongue and follow the digestive process while learning about healthy food choices. 2 Backyard Science There s an ecosystem in your backyard! With experiments, projects, games and stories we ll get to know and identify the many plants, insects and animals that can be found close to home. View insects, make leaf prints, inspect soil samples, create birdhouses and more! Week 4 June 28 July 2 8:30 am Noon Week 7 July :00 4:30 pm Under Construction What does it take to build a sturdy structure? Find out as we explore technology, materials, tools and design through hands-on projects and group experiments. Campers will investigate size and scale, examine natural verses man-made materials, discover that tools help us to do things more easily and that some designs are good for certain purposes, while others are not. Week 4 June 28 July 2 1:00 4:30 pm Liquid Explorations What lives in a drop of water? How are bubbles formed? Find out as we explore all things liquid. Experiment with the properties of water, ph, buoyancy and salinity while creating rainbows and swirling colors. Week 5* July 6 9 8:30 am Noon *4-Day Session Weather Station Get in tune with the weather by becoming a Junior Meteorologist, investigating clouds and weather patterns. We ll examine growing seasons and temperatures while creating rain sticks, weather vanes, and sun prints. Week 6 July :00 4:30 pm Legends and Lifestyles Native American cultures are rich and diverse. Spend a week discovering the lifestyles and legends of different tribes. Make beads, grind corn, create sand paintings and pottery while listening to legends and stories. Week 7 July :30 am Noon Amazing Magnets Join us for a week of magnetic discovery. We ll investigate attraction and repulsion, magnetic fields and paint with magnets while discovering the everyday uses of magnets. Week 8* July :00 4:30 pm *4-Day Session Under the Sea Dive in and explore the amazing world that s under the surface of the ocean. Campers will investigate ocean zones, discover how fish hear and see, examine food webs and create fish habitats while hatching brine shrimp. Campers will explore pendulums, levers, and camper-made catapults; observe heat energy traveling by conduction; survey the use of electrical energy at home and discuss conservation measures; and make wind-propelled objects while learning about wind energy. Week 1 June 7 9 8:30 am Noon $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Investigating Ecosystems Through field trips, activities and experiments campers will investigate different types of wetlands, discover interconnected communities within forests, and examine how plants and animals survive in the harsh desert environments. Campers will also learn about the benefits and threats to these important biomes. Week 1 June 7 9 1:00 4:30 pm $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Light Art and Circuit Science Partner Camp with Bad Dog Rediscovers America SESSION FULL! In the mornings at Bad Dog Studio, campers will create art using glow-in-the-dark paints, digital cameras and LED lights to make sculptures. While at UMNH in the afternoon, campers will explore static electricity, build simple circuits and batteries while creating a switch and an electromagnet. Drop campers off at Bad Dog Studio by 8:30am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30pm. Camp fee includes a $25 transportation fee. Partner Camp with Tracy Aviary Join us for a week of flight study, from birds, mammals and insects to planes, kites and rockets! Mornings at Tracy Aviary will be spent exploring the world of birds from bone density, beaks and feet to flight patterns and habitats. Spend the afternoon at UMNH investigating the forces of aerodynamics, rocket design and buoyancy through activities and model making. 4 Countertop Chemistry Join us as we experiment with all sorts of ingredients found in your kitchen. Examine the chemistry of different foods while investigating fizzing, popping and changing colors. Week 4 June 28 July 2 8:30 am Noon $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Watt s That Sound? How are light and sound created and measured? How do our ears and eyes work? Find out in this week of light and sound study. Campers will experiment with colors, refraction and prisms to make rainbows. We ll investigate the ways in which light travels and compare light sources. We ll also make some noise with homemade instruments and examine sound waves and frequency by visiting a sound studio. Week 4 June 28 July 2 1:00 4:30 pm $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Know Your Food Knowing about the food we eat, how it grows and what different things taste like makes cooking and eating all the more fun! Join us for food investigations and field trips. This camp is sponsored by Slow Food Utah, and taught by Christi Paulson, 2010 USDA National Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher Program awardee. Week 5* July 6 9 8:30 am Noon $112 per week / $96 for UMNH Members Campus Exploration Explore the University of Utah campus and labs! Investigate the Utah Museum of Natural History, the Seismography and Meteorology Labs, the Sound Studio at Gardner Hall and many more locations while taking part in projects related to each visit. Week 5* July 6 9 1:00 4:30 pm $112 per week / $96 for UMNH Members Magical Plants of Red Butte Garden / Science Mix at UMNH Partner Camp with Red Butte Garden SESSION FULL! Magic and science go hand in hand this week! In the morning at Red Butte Garden, campers will discover how ink can be made from plant galls. They ll also experiment with medicinal salves and native plant tonics. While at UMNH in the afternoon, campers will investigate chemistry, physics, optical illusions and more through field trips and hands-on experiments. 5 Theatre Mystery Partner Camp with Children s Theatre of Salt Lake Calling all super sleuths we ve got a crime to solve! This camp has the perfect combination of theatre performance and hands-on forensic investigations. Campers will begin their day at the Children s Theatre where they will experience casting, rehearsing and performing in a play called Mystery Theatre. In the afternoon at UMNH, we ll conduct fingerprint tests, create secret formulas, build spy tools and extract DNA. Join us and find out who-dun-it. Drop campers off at the Children s Theatre by 8:30am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30pm. Camp fee includes a $20 transportation fee. Week 8* July :30 am 4:30 pm $112 per week / $96 for UMNH Members Locomotion Join us as we slither, crawl, walk and run through fun facts about things that move from snails, millipedes and worms to machines and kinetic energy. Brush up on your soil science, investigate weather patterns, get up close and personal with plants and trees while exploring micro and macro-invertebrates through projects, field trips & experiments. Week 8* July :00 4:30 pm $112 per week / $96 for UMNH Members Art and Science for Girls Only Partner Camp with Bad Dog Rediscovers America Mornings at Bad Dog Studio will find campers enjoying and creating projects inspired by famous female artists. We ll be using everything from pencils and paint to recycled materials in order to create abstract paintings and sculptures. At UMNH, campers will delve into several types of science themes including physics, chemistry, biology and more! Drop campers off at Bad Dog Studio by 8:30am and pick them up at UMNH by 4:30pm. We ll inspect our heartbeats; examine our nervous, respiratory and skeletal systems; discover how our body maintains its balance and monitors its temperature; and determine how our skin protects us and how our eyes work! 6 Geology Rocks! Identify and classify rocks, minerals and crystals while examining samples throughout the Museum. Create stalactites and stalagmites while investing how mountains and canyons are formed. Plus, get a behind-thescenes tour of our geology collections and go on a field trip to the new Geology Building on campus! See individual listings. Electrical Connections / Lighten Up Partner Camp with Bad Dog Rediscovers America Come discover the amazing properties of electricity and light! We ll begin our days at UMNH investigating circuits, switches, batteries and electric inventions. While at Bad Dog Studio in the afternoon, campers will create light paintings using digital cameras, explore light while sculpting, make solar prints and much more. Drop campers off at UMNH by 8:30am and pick them up at Bad Dog Studio by 4:30pm. Camp fee includes a $25 transportation fee. Week 2 June :30am 4:30pm $255 per week / $235 for UMNH Members Simple Machines Discover the power of simple machines! Investigate the lever, the inclined plane, the wedge and the screw to name a few. We ll combine them to make complex machines, create our own catapults and pulleys, examine the wheel and axle and explore technology. Week 2 June :30 am Noon $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Botany 101 Participants in this camp will explore the amazing world of plant biology. We ll be examining cells, seeds and seedling development, the effects of light, how absorption of water takes place, as well as plant growth and reproduction. We ll also investigate soil science, extract DNA, find out what osmosis is all about and get up close and personal with trees around campus. Week 2 June :00 4:30 pm $140 per week / $120 for UMNH Members Things with Wings Partner Camp with Tracy Aviary Join us for a week exploring flight, from the man-made to all things natural. Campers will spend the mornings at UMNH investigating insects, bats, rockets, balloons and more through field trips and group projects. While at Tracy Aviary in the afternoon, campers will explore the world of birds from bone density, beaks and feet to flight patterns and habitats. 7 Great Salt Lake Field Camp Partner Camp with FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake Discover the ecological treasure that is in our own backyard as we explore the Great Salt Lake. Find out how this salty terminal lake serves as both hotel and restaurant to over five million birds each year. Investigate brine shrimp life cycles, the salinity and ph of Great Salt Lake, plant and animal life, the history of the lake. Take visits to Farmington Bay, Great Salt Lake and Saltair. Includes a $15 transportation fee. Week 4 June 28 July 2 8:30 am 4:30 pm $245 per week / $225 for UMNH Members Kids in Nature Do you like to get outside, observe and make new discoveries? Come examine nature up close and personal with the guidance of an expert science educator. Discuss and observe bugs, birds, plants, dirt and anything else that comes across your path! Camp fee includes a $15 transportation fee. Learn about gravity from funnels that seem to defy nature by rolling up hill. Use balloons to power a light bulb and discover how electrons are used to produce light. We ll also levitate a ping-pong ball to understand aerodynamics. Week 9 August 2 6 8:30 am Noon Solve It Central Do you have what it takes to solve a crime? Identify and lift finger, lip and foot-prints while analyzing fibers and using chromatography. Lean how to think like a detective while observing a crime scene and figuring out whodun-it. We ll also take a field trip to the local crime lab and talk with the experts. Week 9 August 2 6 1:00 4:30 pm 8 th and 9 th Grade Science Workshop 8 th 9 th Grade Workshop is $160 per week / $140 for UMNH Members DNA Crime Solvers Join us for a week of forensic science and super sleuthing! Map and analyze a mock crime scene while collecting and examining evidence including lifting and inspecting shoe, lip and fingerprints. Identify unknown chemicals to determine if a particular stain is animal or human blood. Conduct DNA testing, interview witnesses, and participate in a handwriting analysis and ink chromatography. At the end of the week, figure out who-dun-it and make sure that the results can stand up in court. Work with officers from the Salt Lake City Crime Lab and tour their facility.
