Extra! Extra! Read all about it... What is the "Daily Dog"? It is a "mini" study on 1 breed of dog. We have a whole litter of Daily Dog mini-units for your student to enjoy. Buy 1, 2, 3, 10, or all. A great way to start the school day with a little bit of history, reading comprehension, science, and handwriting... and all on a subject that most children greatly enjoy...dogs and PUPPIES!!!
Note to the Instructor: This mini-book is designed to give your student(s) a close look at one breed of dog. There will be a "text" lesson, followed by a reading comprehension worksheet, 6 Notebooking sheets (for various levels of handwriting ability), 1 or 2 games, and a coloring page. Enjoy the Dog of the Day Brought to you by BrandenburgStudies
Beagles Beagles are sturdy, compact hunting dogs, similar to foxhounds, only smaller. Their origins can be traced back to England and the 1500s. They were used in packs to hunt small game, such as fox and rabbit. Their name, "Beagle" comes from the French term, "be'geule" which refers to their "baying" voice when in pursuit of game. They are characterized by a happy-go-lucky personality--they are friendly and gentle. They are also known to "follow-their-nose" and once on the scent of something interesting, are single-focused. Beagles are noted for their tri-color coat of black, brown and white. As a matter of fact, the color pattern makes no difference in showing these little dogs, with one exception: the tip of the tail must have a "flag". A "flag" refers to a white tip at the end. They come in 2 sizes: the 13-inch and the 15-inch. And they range in weight from pounds. Beagles make great family pets and are wonderfully patient with children. They do not do well in apartments, as they are active and thrive when they can be active outside as well. A family that wants to make a Beagle their family pet should be aware that due to this breed's inquisitive nature, Beagles should only be outside on a leash or in a fenced-in yard. These dogs do not train well with "electric" fences. They are also very vocal dogs and will bark or bay at any provocation--including when left alone. Care should be taken so that your beagle does not become a neighborhood nuisance. Beagles have a double-coat (a fine undercoat and a course top coat). They
are a medium shedder. Their coat thickens in the winter and sheds more heavily in the spring. Of particular note, "Uno", a beagle, won the Best-in-Show in 2008 at the Westminister Dog Show. It was the first time a dog in his Group won that title. But the most famous Beagle in America is "Snoopy" from the syndicated cartoon "Peanuts". All in all, Beagles make great family pets and are currently listed as the 5th most popular breed in the United States.
Name: Date: Reading Comprehension Sheet 1. What are the origins of the Beagle breed? 2.) What does the word "Beagle" come from? 3.) What was the Beagle originally used for? 4.) What would disqualify a Beagle from winning a dog show? 5.) What does "tri-color" mean? 6.) What should a potential owner of a Beagle think about and plan for if s/he decides to own one? 7.) What does double-coat mean? 8.) What breed is the 5th most popular dog breed in America today?
