2 President s Message If you have been spending anytime outdoors recently you noticed that Spring has come a little early to our valley. Not so great for those of you who like winter outdoor activities with your dogs but pretty great for those of us who don't like to shovel! Assuming everything passes the AKC board we have some exciting class additions to Rally as well as new Herding regulations! New programs include Farm Dog and Nosework! We are planning our first Farm Dog tests so stay tuned. I am pretty sure once all the rules are out on Nosework you can look forward to PVKC adding that to our list of activities! The April show is fast approaching so if you can help out at all please contact Lori Carver! Also check out Montague Police K-9 units new dog cruiser! 3 This is Officer Jim Ruddock with Artie and their cruiser brand new and, as yet, without its lettering and decals. PVKC contributed $2,000 towards the purchase of this cruiser, which includes several safety features specifically for K9 teams. Happy working Artie!! SHOW NEWS PEG VOHR On the Florida circuit, Jason Mazzone s Shetland Sheepdog puppy, Gracemere Just Me ("Jasper"), was Best of Winners and Best Opposite Sex over specials for his first major at the Hernando County Kennel Club on January 12, 2017 and Best of Winners for two more points at the Manatee Kennel Club on January 16, His littermate, Gracemere All of Me ("Milo"), was Best of Winners for two points at the Tampa Bay Kennel Club on January 20, From Ryan Blanker: Saturday February 18 th was a great day at the two CT Siberian Husky Specialties. GCHB Northern Light's Shimmering Moonglade (Shimmer) won Best of Opposite Sex at BOTH Specialties!!! For two 5 point GCH majors!!! Beautifully handled by Colleen Longley in the pm Specialty while I showed her sister. CH Northern Light's When Sparks Fly (Sparkle) won an AOM out of a large specials entry in the pm Specialty (Colleen showed her in the am but as many of you know Sparks is the "evil" twin and refuses to show for anyone but me)! I'm very proud of my two girls. In addition, the afternoon BOB winner is Shimmer s and Sparkle s half brother, and Shimmer won BOS to her half brother, so all three were in the final line up: BOB, BOS. and AOM. (The two green chairs in the picture were the Best Opp prizes!) And Dorianne Almann reports: On Dec. 28, Taika earned her Utility Trail Dog 1000 from Dog Scouts of America for hiking 1,000 miles. On Jan. 1, Taika earned her final Advanced Buildings' leg with a 3rd place for her SD-AB title. Also in Advanced Buildings, she earned a Metallic 3rd place. She earned her SD-AC title with 2nd place in her first Advanced Containers run and by qualifying in her second Advanced Containers run. All under Judge John Rumson. The Performance Scent Dogs trial was held at Tova Training, Raymond, NH. Tova's trials are always fun. On Jan. 7 at PSD's Nose Bowl hosted by the German Shepherd Dog Club of SNH, Bow, NH, Taika earned her second Advanced Distance leg with a 1st place under Judge Jen Belanger. Congrats to the club for holding a fine, well-run, friendly trial. Everything had to be held indoors because it was as cold as it was, but spectators, competitors, and club members made everything work with good humor. On Jan. 23 Taika earned her Novice Parkour Dog (PKD-N) title from International Dog Parkour Association. On Jan. 28 at PSD's trial at well-run trial in All Dogs' Gym's beautiful facility under Judge Jason Thomas, Taika earned her final leg for her Advanced Distance title (PSD-AD) and her first Advanced Speed leg. -3-

4 From Lynn Baker B I am so very proud of Brig (Leos by the Sea Brigadier General, CGC, TDI). On February 16 th he and I embarked on a very important adventure. Brig debuted as a court house dog in Brattleboro Vermont. I couldn't have asked for a better behaved dog. He did his job quietly and gently. He did not disrupt court. I am over the moon proud. We were greeted by 3 court house officers who insisted on calling me mam and loved Brig. Because he is one of the first at this court, there was a motion signed by the judge The entire court staff knew we were coming and wanted to meet "the big dog" who would be in their court. When we left the officer who has been our escort said he was looking forward to our next assignment. What Is a Court Dog, Anyway? Therapy Dogs Can Help During Stressful Court Hearings Certified therapy dogs have proven their worth in providing comfort to seriously and terminally ill people. But therapy dogs have also ventured into the courtroom to help crime victims cope with the prospect of giving testimony. Twenty-six states now have programs in which therapy dogs are working in the judicial system, according to the nonprofit Courthouse Dogs Foundation in Bellevue, Washington. Canine Companions for Independence became the first assistance dog organization to place a therapy dog to work in a prosecutor=s office. Ellie, a Labrador Retriever mix, began working with prosecutors in Seattle in Last year, the Marion County Family Court in Ohio became the first family court to add a courthouse facility dog to its staff, the foundation reports. Camry, a Labrador Retriever mix, is helping children and families cope with the stress of courtroom proceedings. Criminal justice authorities in Jacksonville, Florida, turned to therapy dogs to provide calming support to victims, and to take the focus off the trauma of their testimony while reliving details of their victimization. The idea to bring canines in the courtroom to provide aid and comfort to victims began when the Florida State Attorney's Office teamed up with the Jacksonville Humane Society in late 2005, after a brainstorming meeting by the two organizations. Out of that simple brainstorming session a new pet-therapy program called PATCH (Pet Assisted Therapy in the Courthouse) was conceived. The program has been used in several criminal cases in Florida, including that of an 8-year-old girl recounting the abuse she endured as part of a deposition about an attack, and helping a 20-year-old rape victim give testimony in court against her rapist. Like their counterparts in hospitals and nursing homes, courtroom therapy-dog handlers undergo training, and their canine companions are certified in pet-assisted therapy programs offered through national service-dog organizations. Each dog-and-handler team also acquaint themselves with the legal process before they are allowed to participate in the PATCH program. One of the original courthouse dogs to aid young victims was a German Shepherd Dog named Vachss, used by the Children=s Advocacy Center (CAC) in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1990s, according to the American Bar Association. -4-

6 AKC Farm Dog Certified Test Dogs must approach livestock without showing any fear or aggression, and must walk away when the handler commands. Does your dog have what it takes to be AFarm Dog AKC=s newest event doesn=t require any herding or working knowledge, but instead tests a dog=s aptitude to be a working farm dog. In the test, dogs are presented with livestock and other sights, sounds, and scents common on a farm. The dog has to be confident and trust the handler, following instructions at all times. Dog waits while handler feeds stock Dogs must wait politely (tethered or tied), while the handler feeds the livestock. Any AKC club can become licensed to hold the Farm Dog Certified test. To pass the evaluation the dog must greet the judge politely, walk around the farm including through a gate and over unusual surfaces, walk past livestock and wait while the handler feeds the animals, stand politely while the handler inspects the dog and cleans off hay and debris, and several other items. Your dog doesn=t have to be a herder to participate in the Farm Dog Certified test; it is open to all breeds and All American Dogs. The Farm Dog Certified test was designed so that all dogs can join in. And PVKC intends to do just that in June. Stay tuned for more information on our website. 8 AKC Delegate Report PEG VOHR Here are a few interesting bits from the most recent AKC Board minutes. AKC Scent Work A New Sport The Board VOTED to approve a new sport called AKC Scent Work. Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. This proposal responds to many requests that the American Kennel Club provide such an event. Significant research has been done in developing this program and it is believed it will meet the needs of many dog owners. Scent Work is a sport in which a dog-handler team must locate hidden scents within a defined search area. The dog uses their sense of smell to locate the target odor, which may be an essential oil or the scent of the handler. Any team who finds and calls all hidden odors within the designated time will qualify. Scent Work is a pass/fail sport, however placements will be awarded for the first through fourth place teams, based on fewest number of faults and then on time. Titles are earned when teams reach a certain number of qualifying legs. The event will be open to all breeds and Canine Partners. Dogs must be registered/listed with the AKC. Scent Work is a fun and engaging activity that taps into the dog=s strongest sense. Clubs may start applying to hold AKC Scent Work events on August 1, Events may be held starting October 1, Herding Allowing Juniors to Handle a Dog in a Lower Level Class acquired a qualifying score in such level at a licensed or member trial, it shall be ineligible to be entered in any lower level (on that course/stock). Except a junior handler may handle a dog in a lower level even if the dog has acquired a qualifying score or a title at a higher level. In this case the dog is not eligible for High In Trial or Reserve HIT. Trial secretaries are asked to indicate on the result forms when a dog is handled by a junior. If the dog has not earned a title at the lower level, a title certificate will be issued once the necessary number of qualifying scores have been acquired. If the dog has previously earned a title at the lower level, no further title certificates will be issued. What Dogs Do "Do you have news to share about your dogs? Not just show news, but litter announcements, a new dog or puppy, summer vacation with your dog, funny anecdotes. The Board VOTED to approve changes to Chapter 4, Sections 1 and 4, of the Herding Regulations, to allow juniors to handle a dog in a lower level herding class even if the dog has acquired a qualifying score at a higher level. In that case the dog would not be eligible for High in Trial or Reserve High in Trial. This change is an effort to promote junior participation in the herding program. The following is the new ruling: The regular levels at a Herding trial shall be Started, Intermediate and Advanced. An owner may enter a dog in any trial level he or she deems appropriate; however, once that dog has -8- We are all doing things with our dogs outside the show ring, and it would be fun to hear from others."
