1 CKC Agility Team Canada 2018 AWC APPLICATION CKC Agility Team Canada (ATC) will select teams of dogs and handlers to represent Canada at the FCI Agility World Championships (AWC) to be held in Kristianstad, Sweden on 4 th -7 th October, Any handler interested in earning a spot for the AWC 2018 team must submit his/her intent to apply by by Friday February 23, 2018 to teamleaderckcatc@gmail.com. Include the following details: Handler s name Dog s call name, breed, age, and FCI jump height (small 12, medium 16 or large 24 ) Basic Eligibility for all Candidates Applying to CKC ATC AWC 2018 Candidates must have been Canadian citizens or residents of Canada for the past 24 months. The dog must be identified with an ISO microchip and the rabies certificate must include the microchip numbers. The handler of the dog at Tryouts must be the same handler submitting the team application. Candidates must be willing to travel to Europe with the team at their own expense. Candidates must be willing to acquire any documentation for themselves and their dog required for travel/entry into the designated European Union country. Team members must provide proof that their dog has been vaccinated against rabies no more than one year prior, but no less than one month prior to the date of the competition (Note: The Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) may sign-off on health certificates based on a dog having a three-year vaccine but this will need to be confirmed for the designated country. Candidates must at all times demonstrate extremely good sportsmanship while participating at or watching an agility event. A parent or legal guardian must accompany any candidate under the age of 18 to the Tryouts as well as to the AWC Championship event at their own expense. Application to the FCI AGILITY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (AWC) In addition to meeting the general eligibility requirements all dogs must have achieved the Canadian Kennel Club s titles of AGX (Excellent Standard) and AGXJ (Excellent Jumpers With Weaves). All handlers must have entered, attended and run their own dog in at least 4 CKC Standard runs and 4 CKC JWW runs since 2017 Tryouts and by close of the CKC Fundraising trial on Friday March 23, You will submit your record book at Tryouts registration so that the Selection Committee can confirm these runs. Your books will be returned Sunday. TEAM PRACTICE Successful team members will also be required to attend the Team Practice, held just before the event at a facility arranged for by the Team Leader. This practice is MANDATORY. Intent to Apply deadline is FRI FEBRUARY 23, 2018 The application deadline is midnight EST, FRI MARCH 9,

2 CKC ATC AWC TEAM TRYOUTS Purpose To provide a competition format in which handlers and their dogs may demonstrate their skills and their potential. Handlers and dogs will be tested on various performance elements. To help the Selection Committee decide on who will be named to the 2018 AWC Team. To identify new talent across Canada. To kick off the 2018 AWC fundraising initiatives. Tryout Information Attending Tryouts is mandatory for all applicants wanting to become a member of the 2018 AWC Team. Any applicant who believes he/she has a strong reason for not attending may apply to the Selection Committee before midnight Saturday March 24, Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis. Travel time or time off work will not be considered as grounds for an exception. Seppo Savikko, a well-respected FCI agility judge from Finland, will be judging this event. Tryouts will be held Sat March 24-Sun March 25 at McCann s Agility Arena in Flamborough, Ontario. This facility has top quality artificial turf, rubberized contacts, and winged jumps. This event will be run over two days and will be made up of 3 Standard Agility courses and 2 Jumpers (with weaves) courses in total. Standard and Jumpers courses will be different for the Large Dog and Medium/Small dogs. Tryouts will be open to other agility handlers to attend as skill-building/development opportunity, and will be classed as For Exhibition Only/ formerly named Participant Only. Their run scores will be available to them but will not be included in the overall competition scoring. If the event fills (ie. the maximum number of runs that the judge can judge is reached) then preference will be given to dogs actually trying out. Tryout Rules The rules for the Try-Out will be based on the FCI rules in effect at the 2017 AWC. Dogs competing for spots will run the same courses. 3 Overview of the Selection Process: 1. Owners/handlers selected for the Team must be CKC members, and the dogs must be CKC registered. 2. The Tryout will consist of 5 runs, 3 standards and 2 Jumpers. The courses will be designed and judged by a recognized European judge, who will be designing courses for the upcoming FCI Championships. 3. For AWC, the top 8 per jump height will be shortlisted based on Points for Rank totals over 5 runs. From this pool, the first four teams per jump height will have earned a place. The Selection Committee may be able to assign more individual spots to a jump height that has greater depth than others. If so these will be selected from the next four. Alternates will also be named from this four. 4. Exceptions: The Selection Committee reserves the right to award a position to a candidate who cannot attend tryouts due to extenuating circumstances. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis but will not include issues relating to time off work or travel. Scoring System 1. To ensure reliable scoring, the judge will employ the system they are most familiar with; i.e., one that follows FCI agility rules. The initial scoring will be time + faults. Faults as defined in the document Agility Regulations of the Federation Cynologique Internationale are described below. Exceeding the SCT: 1 fault for each second over. Faults on the course: All course faults are in units of five (5 faults) Knockdowns each time any part of any obstacle is knocked down. Refusals a dog that stops in front of an obstacle or a dog that stops on the course. A dog that runs out or runs by an obstacle, jumps between the tire and the frame or walks through the long jump. A dog that puts its head or paw in a tunnel and comes back out again. Contact area On the A-frame, dog walk and see-saw, the dog must touch the up as well as the down contact with at least one paw or part of its paw. Failure to do so: 5 faults each time it occurs. See Saw The dogs that jumps off the obstacle before passing the pivot point will be penalized with a refusal (5 faults). The see-saw must touch the ground before the dog alights from the obstacle, otherwise it will incur 5 faults. Breakaway Tire If the tire breaks away and the dog refuses then it is eliminated. If the tire breaks away when the dog goes through then it incurs 5 faults. Refusals must be corrected, failure to do so will result in elimination. The same applies to the weaving poles, where each mistake must be corrected. Other faults: knockdowns or missing a contact point: the dog will be penalized but the dog continues its run. 4 There is a list of eliminations in the regulations. The most common ones are below: - Exceeding maximum course time (SCT X 1.75) - Three refusals - Taking obstacles out of sequence, forgetting to take an obstacle, taking obstacle in wrong direction. - Replacing the dog at the start after it has crossed the start line (unless instructed by the judge. - Starting the run before the judge s start signal. - Handler disturbing equipment or going over or under obstacles. 2. To bias the selection for fast dogs, a Points for Rank scheme will be employed. Dogs will be ranked in order for each run based on their time plus faults score. Then the points will be assigned in descending order. 3. Agility and Jumping runs are given the same points: Rank Points SCT for AWC runs will be calculated as 10% greater than the lowest time + faults score for that run. For example, if the lowest score is 28 sec. + 5 faults for a bar for a total of 33 seconds, then the SCT will be % (3.3 sec) or 36.3 seconds. Dogs below rank 15 will receive no points. The ranking points are added to determine the dogs with the best overall performances. Note: The advantage of assigning Points for Rank is twofold. It reduces the effect of an extremely large score accrued under time + faults for a blown run on the dog s overall performance score. Secondly because the ranking points are not assigned for placements beyond the number of positions available and because the sliding scale is biased to higher placements, speedier performances are encouraged. Announcement of Winners The initial assignment of dog/ handler teams to the AWC Team and/or Individual spots, will occur by the close of Tryouts. The Team Leader will take the recommendations of the Selection Committee and proceed to invite all successful competitors over the next days. Once the rosters are confirmed, an official announcement will be made. This is expected to be within two weeks from Tryouts, if not much earlier. SCAN AND SEND IN THE LAST TWO PAGES ONLY! 4

CODE OF CONDUCT AGREEMENT FOR AWC APPLICANTS By completing this application, handlers accept the following (please read carefully): Team members must attend the following mandatory team preparation events: o o The 2-day Team TRYOUT. Team Practice (exact date and location is yet to be determined. However, the practice will be held near the event location and typically the Tues before the event. Team members must satisfy all conditions pertaining to travel documentation (i.e. passports and health certifications) required for themselves and their dog for travel to the event as set forth by the host country, the event, Canadian Food Inspection Agency and CKC Agility Team Canada. Upon acceptance to the AWC Team, you will be invoiced for trip expenses by the CKC ATC Treasurer. Team members will actively participate in fundraising efforts and supplement the amount invoiced from their own funds if not covered by sponsorship, fundraising and donations. Team members must be team supporters and exhibit team sportsmanship at all times. Team members must make every effort to prepare themselves and their dog for the FCI Agility World Championships and participate in team development exercises (physical, mental, technical and tactical exercises) as provided by the Team Captain/Coach. Team Members must give the CKC ATC World Team permission to use video clips of the applicant and their dog for promotional reasons. 5

Anything considered disrespectful by the Team Leader/Team Coach/Team Assistant, whether it be towards the event, persons or organizers, in person or on any form of media is forbidden and will be dealt with swiftly and effectively. Team members are representatives of the CKC ATC AWC Team and are also representing those companies that sponsor the World Team, and must behave accordingly.
