2 Welcome to the 2015 Swimming Carnival Welcome to the St Kieran s Athletics Carnival for In addition to being our inter-house carnival, today is also a trial for students who will represent St Kieran s School at the Zone 6 Catholic Schools Carnival. Welcome to the 2015 St Kieran s Swimming Carnival. In addition to being an inter-house Swimming carnival, today is also a trial for students who will represent St Kieran s School at the Zone 6 Catholic Primary School Carnival, held early The carnival this year is once again based wholly on participation and enjoyment with students being encouraged to nominate for every event they can perform proficiently. Our school carnivals nurture a sense of mateship, healthy competition and working towards a goal bigger than one s self. All students who compete will earn points for their house. The winning house will be awarded the prestigious swimming carnival shield. The Goal: Lifelong Physical Activity The overarching theme of the Australian Physical Education Curriculum is to foster lifelong physical activity. Our school inter-house carnivals are an opportunity for this lifelong affinity with physical activity to flourish. With this in mind we encourage parents to take a strengths-based approach to supporting your children name and celebrate their success and in doing so create a positive experience of physical activity. 3 Formalities Uniform Swimming caps are compulsory. No cap no swim Students are encouraged to wear house colours (gold, green or blue). Official house shirts will be sold prior to the carnival. Students must wear covered school shoes to and from the venue. School hat must be worn. Students may wear a sunshirt but it is not compulsory. Water bottle. Lunch (there will be no canteen or tuckshop available on the day). Parent and spectator seating The grandstands are reserved for student seating. Ample area for parents is available opposite the grandstand. Please bring your own chair.

4 Venue information The carnival will be held at the Sandgate State School swimming pool. Entry for the pool is off Keogh Street. Street parking is limited, however, ample parking can be found in the Einbunpin Lagoon car park.

5 Zone 6 Selection Policy Background Information St Kieran s is part of the Zone 6 Catholic Schools Sporting Organisation which comprises of other Catholic schools in the surrounding area. Students are selected to represent St Kieran s at the Zone 6 Inter-school Athletics Carnival based on their times and results. The school is currently in a transitional time from the Middle Schools competition to the Big Schools competition. More information regarding our updated selection policy will be available in 2016.

6 Points Scoring and Age Champion House Shield The house that earns the most points will be awarded the house shield. See table below for point distribution. Age Champion Students will be awarded points for each event they compete in. Points will be tallied across their respective age group and sex. The student with the most points will be awarded age champion (students who are in Year 1 or 2 will be competing against students in the Year 3 age group as it is a Year 3-6 carnival). Begin marshalling process for next students as soon as the race has started to ensure prompt changeovers Marshall Margaux Tarrier Core responsibilities: Megan Carpenter Marshalling and quieting students Take them to the starting line Ensure quiet for the start Starter Mat Scott Core responsibilities Starting the race promptly without any confusion for students Whistle for students to take to the blocks Hand in the air with gun to signal start - Take your marks, Bang Head Judge Kerry Simko Core responsibilities Adjudicate on timing discrepancies Record timekeepers times and give to walker Place Jill Jahnke Core responsibilities Judges/Timekeeper Timing the races and recording the times each competitor.
