Halloween Safety Tips For Your Cat Halloween Safety Tips for Your Cat by Dr. Lorie Huston While Halloween may be a fun and exciting time for your kids, your cat may find it more stressful than fun. A steady stream of strangers ringing the doorbell, all wearing strange costumes and shouting "Trick or Treat" may be enough to send even the most courageous cat over the edge. And even if the trick-or-treaters do not bother your cat, there's still plenty of trouble for him to find. Keep your cat safe at Halloween with the following tips: Especially for black cats, Halloween is a dangerous time. However, any cat is at risk outdoors after dark on Halloween. Make sure your cat is confined indoors well before the sun sets. Personally, I prefer my cats to remain indoors year-round but for those of you who allow your pets outside, this is one of the nights you need to be careful. Keep your cat away from the entry or front door of your house. Cats are quick and can easily dart between your legs and out the door before you have time to react. Confine your cat to an inner part of the house or set up a barrier to the entry-way to avoid an unintentional escape. Constantly ringing doorbells and shouting trick-or-treaters are frightening for many cats and, once out the door, your cat may be difficult to find and retrieve. Make sure your cat is wearing an identification tag, just in case the worst should happen and he accidentally escapes. Keep candy and candy wrappers out of reach. Many Halloween treats, like chocolate, are toxic to both cats and dogs. And candy wrappers can become toys that turn into intestinal blockages for curious playful cats. Keep Halloween decorations out of reach as well. Like candy wrappers, ribbons and strings are enticing toys for your cat that can
7 be quite dangerous if ingested. Be careful of open flames, like those in a candle or lit pumpkin. Cats are curious creatures and can easily be burned while investigating these flames. There is also the danger of fire should your adventurous feline tip over a candle. Wires, electric cords and batteries from Halloween decorations can also present a threat for your pet. Chewing on electric cords can result in electrocution or burns. Batteries make irresistible toys for your cat but are quite corrosive and toxic if chewed. Keep these items out of reach. Do not force your cat to wear a costume. Most cats find wearing strange clothing stressful and upsetting. Stress and cats simply do not go well together. And Halloween is already stressful enough for most cats without insult to injury. If your cat is especially high-strung or anxious, consider a calming remedy, such as Feliway. A bit of precaution and common sense can make Halloween a safe time for your cat and allow you to enjoy the holiday without having to worry about your feline friend. Source: /lorieahuston/2014/october/halloween-safety -tips-your-cat-32105# Featured Dog of the Week: Frankie Frankie is a love with baby blue eyes and an eager spirit. 8 But dogs and cats can be vicious at times. My real fear is not so much Fluffy's bite-but Fluffy's bite after she's bitten her owner. Talk about high risk: a hypodermic injection of whatever her owner's got. This is yet another reason I never went into human medicine: cats and dogs can't [easily] give me anything deadly that I can't be vaccinated against. 3. Keep pets confined and away from the door. Not only will your door be constantly opening and closing on Halloween, but strangers will be dressed in unusual costumes and yelling loudly for their candy. This, of course, is scary for our furry friends. Dogs are especially territorial and may become anxious and growl at innocent trick-or-treaters. Putting your dog or cat in a secure room away from the front door will also Age Sex Size Color Leopard dog 3 years 1 month 29 days Male Medium White/Brown Spayed/Neutered Declawed No Housetrained Unknown Location Adoption Center Intake Date 5/18/2016 ARN 0416-D16 Stage Available 10 Halloween Safety Tips for Pets Halloween can be a festive and fun time for children and families. But for pets? Let's face it, it can be a downright nightmare. Forgo the stress and dangers this year by following these 10 easy tips. Safety First: Bites and Mites Are Not a Vet's Best Friend by Dr. Patty Khuly Recently, a vet in my area was mauled so badly (by a Rottweiler) he hasn't been back to work in months. I've been told he may never practice medicine again I don't generally regard my profession as dangerous-and certainly not life threatening. After all, these are dogs and cats, not lions, tigers, and bears. I'd venture to guess that a UPS driver is at greater risk (have you seen those people drive?). 1. Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets. All forms of chocolate -- especially baking or dark chocolate -- can be dangerous, even lethal, for dogs and cats. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures. Halloween candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar and subsequent loss of coordination and seizures. And while xylitol toxicity in cats has yet to be established, it's better to be safe than sorry. 2. Don't leave pets out in the yard on Halloween. Surprisingly, vicious pranksters have been known to tease, injure, steal, and even kill pets on Halloween night. Inexcusable? Yes! But preventable nonetheless.
9 prevent them from darting outside into the night... a night when no one wants to be searching for a lost loved one. 4. Keep your outdoor cats inside several days before and several days after Halloween. Bites are, however, by far the most common injury on the job. I get bitten about once a year, on average. I've only had to go to the hospital twice. And I've been working in this field since I was ten years old. That's a great average. Most vets fare about the same. Equine vets and exotic animal vets can't say the same. In these specialties, if you have to be hospitalized usually it's due to a nasty kick or in the event of some serious dental interaction. Cats and dogs are usually limited in their attacks in the controlled environment of an animal hospital; you generally won't be set upon by a pack of pit bulls, for example. The more annoying safety issues are the ones I really hate. Last year I developed an ugly red ringworm patch about an inch in diameter-on my face. Have you ever had ringworm? Let me just say that it doesn't go away with a mere one or two weeks of treatment. No. This fungal infection saw me through Halloween, Thanksgiving, and New Years. It was gone by Valentine's Day. Not that I cared by then; the damage had been done. What's a date after you've had a huge, raw patch of skin adjacent to your mouth for the better part of four months? And how about mange? I get sarcoptic (red) mange about three times a year. Itchy, scaly little bumps that coalesce at your watchband and bra line. Black cats are especially at risk from pranks or other cruelty-related incidents. In fact, many shelters do not adopt out black cats during the month of October as a safety precaution. 5. Keep Halloween plants such as pumpkins and corn out of reach. Although they are relatively nontoxic, such plants can induce gastrointestinal upset should your pets ingest them in large quantities. Intestinal blockage can even occur if large pieces are swallowed. And speaking of pumpkins. 6. Don't keep lit pumpkins around pets. Should they get too close, they run the risk of burning themselves or knocking it over and causing a fire. 7. Keep wires and electric light cords out of reach. If chewed, your pet could cut himself or herself on shards of glass or plastic, or receive a possibly lifethreatening electrical shock. 8. Don't dress your pet in a costume unless you know they'll love it.
10 But there's nothing worse than sitting down for a nice meal at an upscale Italian restaurant and having your date (who, incidentally, you've only been dating for about two weeks) ask what the heck is climbing up your cleavage (a tick, in this case). Yes, the profession is challenging and sometimes even perilous-sometimes more to my social life than to my physical well-being. It's often hard to explain where all the scars and scratches come from, not to mention the bugs. But it's one hell of a lot more fun than sitting behind a desk or the wheel of a delivery truck. So I'll just take my chances. Source: If you do decide that Fido or Kitty needs a costume, make sure it isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict movement, hearing, or the ability to breathe or bark and meow. 9. Try on pet costumes before the big night. If they seem distressed, allergic, or show abnormal behavior, consider letting them go in their "birthday suit". Festive bandanas usually work for party poopers, too. 10. IDs, please! If your dog or cat should escape and become lost, having the proper identification will increase the chances that they will be returned. Just make sure the information is up-to-date, even if your pet does have one of those fancy-schmancy embedded microchips.
