1 pawsitive sc p NEWS FROM YOUR HUMANE SOCIETY The critical importance of having fun! By Amy Stover, Volunteer Programs Manager WINTER/SPRING 2017 At the Capital Area Humane Society, it is our privilege to provide the highest quality of care for our animals. In order to meet this goal we strive to provide the five basic freedoms in animal care: the freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease; the freedom to express natural behavior, and the freedom from fear and distress. In standing with our traditions of innovation and forward thinking, we have added a sixth freedom to enhance the quality of care that our animals receive: the freedom from boredom. So, what does that mean? It means we are raising the bar yet again, putting into motion a formal enrichment program directly impacting the canines in our care. We have always provided our animals with much more than food and exercise, but on an informal basis. Days now include more quality time spent with our staff and volunteers, as well as a greater level of stimulating, individualized attention than we were able to provide before. As a part of this program we are utilizing extrasensory enrichment such as food dispensing toys, scent detection and obedience training to keep their minds engaged, and play dates with humans and other dogs to help make life at the shelter a life more worth living! Our aim is for dogs to experience life the way it was meant to be experienced! Another key component of this program is identifying dogs that require more productive outlets for their boundless energies such as Ollie. Ollie was a giant Labrador who was gifted with a very high level of energy who very quickly earned the nickname Ollie, no! His size, complete lack of manners, and his typical Labrador Boss in the ballpit mouthiness made Ollie difficult for his handlers to walk. Ollie needed more from us to be successful in a home with an adoptive family. Dogs without an appropriate outlet can develop problem behaviors and health conditions whether they are in a home or here in the shelter. Using the enrichment program, we were able to identify his needs, provide him with much needed structure, and teach him more appropriate ways to use his energies. Our team was able to provide Ollie with the consistency and enrichment needed to really see who he was under those crazy lab behaviors. He was a big softie who craved attention from his human friends and other dogs. We were able to take advantage of how food and play motivated him to positively reinforce behaviors we wanted to see from him. We also came to know that Ollie was a big fraidycat. The poor boy was afraid of bubbles and kiddie pools, but loved to go for runs and get belly rubs. Learning better what each dog likes and doesn t like helps us create a customized plan for enrichment. Dogs also need passive enrichment, Continued on page 2 INSIDE: Update on devastating water damage (Page 3)

Continued from cover story like quiet time in an office in the company of humans or a calming car ride. Success for Ollie! His new dad, Ken adopted him with the goal of having him become a service dog. Five weeks after the adoption they stopped in to see us and Ollie showed off his great manners and clear bond with Ken. The transformation in Ollie from the time of his rescue to adoption was amazing and Ollie isn t done yet! This is an exciting time for the Humane Society and for all of those involved with us. We hope that you are all ready to see us step up the game in animal welfare by creating a space where our animals really thrive during their stay with us, enjoying all of their freedoms! The enrichment program is generously supported by the ASPCA, the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust and the PetFinder Foundation. 3 Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, In the early morning hours of December 17, 2016, I received the call that it was raining in our second floor training hall. And it wasn t raining cats and dogs. A frozen sprinkler pipe burst sending a flood of water into our ceiling, ultimately collapsing the ceiling and leaving 6 inches of water to coat our training hall floor. To make matters worse, the water seeped into every nook and cranny and traveled down the walls to saturate all the spaces below. Thankfully, neither animals nor people were hurt. Nearly a third of our building, however, was severely damaged by the water. In total, we lost all use of our training hall, our entire hospital including surgery suites, isolation and x-ray; three bathrooms, our retail store and two offices. Our hospital is the center of our mission service upon which all of our animals depend. The loss was great and nothing short of debilitating for our operation. But this isn t a country song and we aren t done with the story. We are making the very best of this situation. Just like the animals who enter our doors every day sometimes weary from tough times and struggle we are resilient and our spirit is unbreakable. I m so inspired by our staff and volunteers and their response to a devastating challenge. Rather than give up and close our doors to the animals and people who need us; we got creative. With the help of our fantastic partners at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, we were able to re-route our veterinary team to campus to spay/neuter there. Instead of turning away dogs from other shelters, we deployed our veterinary and behavior teams to partner shelters to conduct physical exams on-site at their facilities. And these are just a few examples of how our staff and partners came together to keep our mission and services running strong. We are grateful for the support and encouragement along the way thank you! So what s next? Well, just like the animals we serve, we re going to get better and stronger with every day. We are rising with the tide taking every opportunity to make our facility better than ever before. YOU can help! Please consider making a gift toward our restoration and renovation. If you d like more information about how your gift can help revitalize our hospital or revamp our adoption center, call today or check out our website to learn more: cahs-pets.org. Upstairs training hall Many, many thanks to all of the champions who continue to help us carry out our mission! You amaze and inspire and we are beyond grateful! Sincerely, Rachel D.K. 4 Cruelty Investigations internship impactful, unforgettable for OSU students By Victoria Nogay, Humane Agent Each semester, the Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) hosts a select few Ohio State University students through its Cruelty Investigations internship program. The program provides qualified students interested in careers such as criminology, law enforcement, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare with an unfiltered, hands-on experience working in humane law enforcement. While completing the 150-hour internship, students spend most of their time assisting humane agents in the field responding to citizen complaints, investigating cases of animal cruelty, and executing search warrants. Interns are taught how to handle animals, take scene photographs, create scene sketches, and write reports. Our spring 2016 interns even got the opportunity to take part in a largescale dogfighting rescue operation, partnering with Columbus Police, the ASPCA, and several other agencies. In addition to gaining field experience, it is imperative for our interns to possess and grow a sense of compassion and empathy. The Cruelty Investigations Department (CID) serves all communities and neighborhoods in Columbus and Franklin County, which affords interns the opportunity to help people from a variety of backgrounds and socio-economic levels. This is a great internship to learn how to interact with all types of people, says Molly Washko, OSU student and former intern. Community outreach is a primary goal of CAHS, and we strive to help people and pets in need whenever we can. The program began in December 2013 with current Humane Agent, Elysse Rathbone. At that time, Elysse was a senior criminology major at OSU, hoping to pursue a career in animal cruelty investigations. She was unaware that CAHS had a law enforcement division, but saw one of the CID vans driving around the city one day and decided to inquire about an internship. Impressed by her criminology major and prior experience working in a veterinary hospital, Chief Humane Agent Kerry Manion interviewed Elysse and offered her an internship for the spring semester. The internship lead to a job opportunity as the CID Dispatcher, and by November 2015, Elysse was a Interns Lindsey and Molly commissioned Humane Agent. Once hired on full-time, Agent Rathbone took ownership of the burgeoning internship program, helping to sculpt and define it. An eagerness to learn, she says, is the most important quality an intern should have. Other selection criteria include: applicant must be an OSU student (preference for criminology majors), have no propensity for motion sickness, have availability three days per week, and have a passion for our mission. In addition to Agent Rathbone, there have been a number of former interns who have stayed connected to CAHS, many pursuing employment. Abigail 4 pawsitive sc p
5 Anspaugh and Sara Jones worked in the animal support center and veterinary services department; Courtney Herndon transitioned her internship into a part-time job for the summer of 2016, assisting agents in the field; Brittany Trischan is now a humane agent; Molly Washko, mentioned above, said the internship has made her consider a career as a humane agent as well. Molly really committed to the internship, and got far more out of it that she expected. My most memorable experience during the internship was when Chief Manion and I ran a call to pick up an unweaned kitten. I fostered him and I raised him myself. I ended up adopting him. This made me realize how much humane agents do for the community. Chief Manion believes the program is important because it provides the unique opportunity to share our mission with students. We thank all former, current, and future interns for joining us in that great mission to fight animal cruelty, help animals in need, and advocate for their well-being. Intern Courtney with furry friend and suited up in Hazmat gear Cat Café Did you know? Ohio s very first cat café opened last September in Clintonville! Eat Purr Love Cat Café is located at 3041 Indianola Avenue and is open 6 days a week for mingling with the kitties as well as special activities like painting classes and yoga! Eat Purr Love is owned by Chrissy Kuras, whose background includes 30 years as a veterinary assistant and a lifelong passion for animal rescue. Chrissy completed our STEPS volunteer training and also trained as an adoption counselor. The Capital Area Humane Society is the exclusive adoption partner of the cat café, with 8-12 cats available for adoption at all times. As of January 16, 73 cats have been adopted! We re so grateful to have this extraordinary opportunity to introduce so many cats to potential adopters. Our community loves animals and it is great to see them embrace the cat café concept. Chrissy shares our high standards for keeping the cats happy and healthy and it shows in the results, says Rachel Finney, Executive Director of the Capital Area Humane Society. All available café cats may be viewed at along with the other kitties available at the Capital Area Humane Society. Look for the Eat Purr Love logo to see who is waiting to meet you at the café. The adoption process and fees are the same as here at the shelter, with an everyday low adoption fee of $10 for adult cats which includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, dewormer, flea and tick prevention, vaccines including rabies, and testing for FeLV/FIV. Kitties are selected for the café to represent a range of personalities and ages with ability to thrive in a multi-cat setting. The cat café is a great environment for leisurely meeting the kitty of your dreams, with a stimulating environment that allows the cats to engage with guests as they wish, or view the action from a high shelf or take a break and visit a nonguest area. Eat Purr Love recommends advance reservations to reduce waiting time. The hourly cover charge is $10 with discounts for seniors, college students, veterans and animal rescue volunteers.
