APPLICATION PROCESS FOR HOMEWARD BOUND USHUAIA, ARGENTINA, DECEMBER PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY. IT CONTAINS CRUCIAL INFORMATION FOR APPLICATIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN HOMEWARD BOUND. Dear All, Introducing Homeward Bound: a state of the art leadership and strategic program, available to 78 women in science in, or thinking of taking up, leadership roles in our world. Homeward Bound is a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Antarctica and a new future for our planet. Our singular focus is to do the following: Elevate the role of women, with a science background, in leadership globally Clearly demonstrate how polar science is teaching us about what is happening with the planet Explore how women at the leadership table might enable a more sustainable future HOW TO BE PART OF THIS Come aboard a ship set for Antarctica on a 20 day trip of discovery, learning and connections, departing from Ushuaia. Ushuaia is a resort town on Argentina s Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the southernmost tip of South America, nicknamed the End of the World. The windswept town, perched on a steep hill, is surrounded by the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel. It is one of the key gateways to Antarctica. On board there will be three central components: a state of the art leadership program; a world class program on the development of strategy and the discipline of execution; and an exceptional science program, ensuring all women understand what is happening to our planet 1 P age
Our outcome: 1. A unique group of women with the same leadership context, highly skilled in the development and execution of strategic intentions, with the same motivation to care for our planet both individually and collectively 2. A documentary which tells the story, through the eyes of these women, about the challenges and impact of women in leadership in our world today, with Antarctica as a back drop 3. A network of women who will support each other in staying in and taking up leadership roles to influence policy and decision making globally Preliminary global faculty (who have agreed to be filmed for the unique use of Homeward Bound) will include people such as: Jane Goodall (World famous primatologist and environmentalist) Sylvia Earle (World famous oceanographer and advocate for global ocean conservation) Franny Armstrong (Filmmaker, the Age of Stupid, 100 most influential women in the world) Dr Robert Kaplan (Emeritus Professor of Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School, known as co-creator, together with David P. Norton, of the balanced scorecard; David will also be filmed) Dr Susan David (Co-Founder and Director of the Institute of Coaching, world expert on emotional intelligence) will co-facilitate the leadership program, together with Fabian Dattner, one of Australia s best known social entrepreneurs and leadership experts. Along the way, an exceptional science program will be delivered by specialists from the Australian Antarctic Division and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (amongst others). They will share valuable insights into the complex environmental systems our world relies upon. WHAT YOU WILL GAIN A fiercer sense of self, understanding who you are as a leader and what aids/limits your opportunities Pragmatic skills in influencing multiple stakeholders The ability to deal with sensitive, difficult or political discussions Comprehensive strategic skills in thinking, planning, execution and measurement A deepening of personal connection to our planet and the science behind environmental change 2 P age
BE PART OF AN EXCITING NEW DOCUMENTARY SERIES The whole process from selection to induction, the voyage to the return into the waiting world will form the content for a companion documentary. This film will shine a light on the global crisis that is the profound shortage of women in leadership, encouraging a ripple affect of change to address this imbalance once and for all. Share your voice and ideas, revealing how you take the Homeward Bound experience and translate it in to everyday life and inspire countless others along the way. This is the vision, reach and scope of Homeward Bound. This is now your chance to demonstrate why you should get 1 of 38 remaining positions. HOMEWARD BOUND DECEMBER 2016 THEN AND NOW This started in October We launched expressions of interest in November and received 170 EOIs from which we chose 42 women, for Homeward Bound in the first round. We originally gave ourselves six months to find this level of commitment. We received this in just under 4 weeks. This told us two things: It is the right idea at the right time with the right audience We had a very difficult selection process ahead We now have an opening for 38 additional positions in the second round offering THE NEXT STEPS The application involves three parts, all of which need to be returned by the 10 th of August 2015 via (homewardbound@dattnergrant.com.au) to qualify for selection. PART A: INTRODUCTORY COVER LETTER Addressing the following key selection criteria to confirm: 1. Your science background (degree/s) 2. You are able to raise US$15,000 by the 30 th of June 2016, which includes a 10% deposit on acceptance of your position by the 31th of August 2015, 30% by the 28 th of February 2016 and the final payment by the 30 th of June The aggregated contribution of participants covers 50% of the cost of the expedition, i.e. the boat and the core team. The 3 P age
balance (the design, facilitation, filming and faculty) is either donated or separately funded. The estimated value of the trip is US$30,000. Please see Terms and Conditions (within application form) for further details on cancellations, refunds and payment. 3. Permission to film you and use the footage for the Homeward Bound documentary (and to conduct a standard assessment profile if required) 4. Your agreement to release your application film and/or written application for documentary purposes PART B: A THREE-PAGE CURRICULUM VITAE PART C: YOUR APPLICATION We want to know about you and what makes you the best possible candidate to come on this extraordinary trip. Write 500 words or less* ^ Instructions for submitting a 2 minute video are contained in the Application Template *This option is reserved only for people who cannot access an iphone or the requisite technology to film themselves THIS IS THE WOW FACTOR. SELL YOURSELF TO US! Questions to think about answering in your own unique way (these do not need to be answered sequentially, nor do they all need to be answered). Why you for this trip - your story so far Why leadership matters to you Why women in leadership roles matter What you've done with your science background Examples of where you've already contributed to the globe and what the outcome was What additional 'skills' you bring (musician, artist, yoga instructor, etc) 4 P age
Something unique about you - something about you that says 'Hey, this is what I will do for the group, for women, for our world' How you will take the knowledge/expertise you've built on the voyage out into the world Please note: Video submissions that go over 2 minutes will be automatically disqualified. All applications must be received by midnight on the 10th of August 2015 (Australian Eastern Standard Time) and include Parts A, B and C above. If attending from other countries, please also factor in travel time to get to Ushuaia, southern Argentina. ADDITIONAL FEES TO CONSIDER Approximately $600 for Antarctic Clothing (See Appendix 1) Travel Insurance (See Appendix 2 and Terms and Conditions for specific requirements) Cost of travel to and from Ushuaia 5 P age
THE FACULTY A faculty of experts and thought leaders will be involved in the journey. Please note the following with regard to the faculty: 1. A world class faculty have been approached to support this event 2. They will not be present on the boat; they are being filmed throughout exclusively for this trip 3. A significant number of the faculty we have approached have said they would like to come on the trip but we have declined, apart from Dr. Susan David who will act as coach and mentor during the program - our objective is very clear - we want to ensure we can accept the maximum number of participants on the trip, and optimise the time with the women providing the best possible education to ensure action flows from Homeward Bound. Places on the boat are extremely limited THE DOCUMENTARY The entire trip will be filmed with the intention to produce a 60 minute documentary. By accepting a place on Homeward Bound, you are agreeing to be filmed throughout the trip and to freely release any footage the documentary makers choose to use in the final cut. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not submit an application. THE RESEARCH University of Tasmania will be doing longitudinal research as part of the Homeward Bound project, including the exploration of: Who we select and why The impact during the trip of the style of transformational leadership education provided Tracking the participants over the next 1-5 years to see how the initiative has influenced their journey It is a condition of your acceptance of a position on the trip that you also agree to participate in the research as required. This will be conducted by Skype, phone or face to face if possible and may be up to 3-4 hours of interviewing over the 1-5 year period. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not submit an application. CAVEATS The Homeward Bound Facebook conversations will not be taken into account in the selection process. The selection panel includes the film maker, the researcher, the leadership expert, the coach and one of the founding members of Women in Polar Science. 6 P age

Appendix 1 Clothing Packing List To help you prepare for Homeward Bound, Antarpply Expeditions have prepared a list of recommended items to pack. Please keep in mind this list is simply a guideline, which you may choose to modify to fit your individual comfort needs. is an excellent website for the appropriate outfit. Climate Our expedition to Antarctica takes place during the Austral summer. Generally, temperatures in the Antarctic are in the 0C and -15C. Although it can be quite sunny, expect rain, snow, fog and a high wind-chill factor. Expedition Clothing (Comfortable, Durable & Loose) Waterproof Gear: Rain jacket Waterproof trousers Rubber boots Pull-on, unlined, knee-high boots are required for wet landings. Boots must be high with strong, rubber-ridge, non-skid soles. These specifications are very important. You may be stepping into water up to 10 deep on wet landings. Moon or leather boots are NOT appropriate. A supply of rubber boots or Wellingtons, are available on board the USHUAIA and includes a wide variety of sizes. It is recommended that you bring your own only if you require a special size. Please note that the boots on board have been used by previous passengers. Outerwear Parka (Water-repellent hooded parka) Waterproof gloves or mittens (2 pairs minimum) Hat that covers ears, scarf, or other face protection Jacket or sweaters and fleece tops Cotton turtlenecks and t-shirts It is best to bring at least one lightweight and one heavy jacket or sweater. Sweatshirts, turtlenecks, and fleece pullovers are also good Insulators. Layering with wool, silk or synthetics fabrics, rather than cotton, is recommended. 8 P age

Appendix 2 Insurance Travel Insurance The Homeward Bound expedition travels to a remote corner of the globe where medical evacuation in the case of an emergency may be very difficult. Evacuations are extremely expensive, particularly from Antarctica where they can cost anything upwards of US$100,000. We require that you obtain emergency evacuation insurance in the event of a medical emergency. We strongly advise you purchase trip cancellation and baggage insurance. Where a passenger requires hospitalisation or medical treatment including evacuation, all costs associated with this are the full responsibility of that passenger. Please check that your policy (particularly if it is issued by your credit card provider) covers this for the destination that you are visiting, and covers any pre-existing medical conditions. If you are arranging your own insurance, you should check that all included activities are covered such as landings and Zodiac cruising. Our Expedition Leaders Adventure Associates can certainly give you a quote for travel insurance, including medical evacuation. Call their office on Please also refer to the terms and conditions in the application document. 10 P age
