It also, excitingly, marks the first year of our new Forest Cats Speciality Show. The Committee hopes that our exhibitors and judges enjoy this new addition to our program. Also this year sees another major change, with our All Breeds and Specialist Shows being run on the same day. The aim is to make participation in our shows easier for exhibitors, and we hope the change achieves this for you. Our All Breed exhibitors should be able to get away by lunchtime, making the show an easier proposition for both exhibitor and their cats. Our Specialist Show judges this year represent a wealth of experience and passion for the Birman breed, all being well established and respected breeders of Birmans. They all also bring very good knowledge and understanding of the Forest Cats breeds. Judy Lewis is patron of our Birman Club, and we are very pleased to have her judging for us again this year. We are also pleased to have Lyall Payne from New Zealand judging Ring 2 and Lesley Freemann from Victoria judging Ring 3. We welcome them all and hope they enjoy their assignments. RING 1 JUDGES PROFILES Judy Lewis QFA In 1964 I owned a show/breeding lilac point Siamese female and this was the start of my interest in the cat fancy. My prefix Metinka was granted in NSW in 1964.

In 1967 a friend and I brought into Australia the first pair of seal point Birmans from England followed by seven more seal and blue point Birmans to expand the gene pool.

4 RING 1 JUDGES PROFILES Judy Lewis QFA In 1964 I owned a show/breeding lilac point Siamese female and this was the start of my interest in the cat fancy. My prefix Metinka was granted in NSW in In 1966 I owned a deaf blue eyed white Persian. In 1967 a friend and I brought into Australia the first pair of seal point Birmans from England followed by seven more seal and blue point Birmans to expand the gene pool. During my years of judges training I bred Burmese and Devon Rex and have shown a blue British Shorthair, Oriental, Russian and Maine Coon. I achieved many awards with these breeds. My main passions are the Birman and Maine Coon breeds. I gained my Group 1 licence in 1974, Group 2 in 1980 and then completed my training in Group 3 (all with CFA NSW) to become an All Breeds Judge in I transferred to QFA Inc in I have judged all over Australia and New Zealand as well as in Singapore, UK, Japan and South Africa. It is my pleasure to handle and judge so many beautiful felines, to meet interesting people and to see progress in the health and welfare of cats and the cat fancy as a whole. RING 2 Lyall Payne QFA I have been actively interested in purebred animals and poultry, and pedigrees since my early school days. As a youngster I keenly bred purebred Minorca poultry and also ran Black Orpington and bantam breeds. Years later, as I gained an interest in genealogy, I was to learn that my great grandfather, W A Sowman of Blenheim was a major breeder and significant judge of poultry. I had a near neighbour and mentor in Stan Derbyshire, who instructed me not only in the practical husbandry aspects of poultry-keeping but also the finer points of structure and breed characteristics. Prior to leaving school my interest turned to afghan hounds where my passion for exhibiting, breeding, and intense breed pedigree knowledge grew.i enjoyed a good deal of success having set the record of owning and breeding more Specialty Best in Show winners than any other. A record that stood for many years. I maintain my canine interests through regular judging and also participation in online discussion groups on the afghan hound breed. In 1992, we acquired our first Birmans, who literally came with the house when the property was purchased from Peter Pearce who had been a fellow breeder and exhibitor of afghan hounds. At

5 the same time we met and were excellently mentored by Janice Davey and Margaret MacDougall. The breeding was done under Val Richard s Tajomeer prefix until 2006 when I registered Chalfont, named after Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire, England, the village where generations of my Payne family predecessors lived. I maintain an avid interest in Birman pedigrees, breeding and exhibiting along with my passion for judging and interpreting standards hands on. RING 3 Lesley Freemann GCCFV I was born in New Zealand and immigrated to Australia in 1968, where I completed my university education. After many years of working in Reproductive Technology, and a period of time as a teacher of Certificate III for the Companion Animals Course Box Hill TAFE, I am currently employed in Disability Services. My recreational interests for the past 30 plus years have been mainly dominated by the breeding, showing and judging of pedigree cats. Initially I started with Siamese and added a few Burmese along the way (prefix Tokiwi). However, the hobby really developed into an obsession when I encountered Colin and Di McKenzie and their beautiful Birmans (prefix Khadine). I commenced breeding Birmans under the Eldorato prefix with my first litter being born 10 days after my last baby. The gene pool was very small within Australia at the time, and importation was difficult and expensive. Fortunately, breeders were very generous with sharing their lines and the breed has now built up to where it is today. I am very proud to have been part of this evolution and count myself very fortunate in the friends that I have made along the way. I undertook my Group 1 (all longhair) Judges licence in 1998 and completed my Group 3 (all shorthair except Siamese), in I became an All Breeds Judge in January 2006, after passing Group 2. In addition, I am still actively breeding and showing Birmans. Initially I started with seal and blue breeding only, but then started to dabble with the chocolate gene and this has proved to be an exciting new challenge. We have achieved the status of GCCFV Group 1 Breeder of the Year for 8 years in all. My husband, Kevin, shares this interest with me and we are very fortunate to have achieved a great deal of success in the last decade, winning 4 Cat of the Year awards, 2 kitten of the Year. I am currently President of The Birman Society Inc and Chairperson of GCCFV. In addition to our cat breeding and showing, my life is shared with 3 children and 4 grandchildren. I also enjoy reading, travel, watching sport, (rugby is my passion).
