2 Nevada Humane Society by the Numbers TAKING SPAY/NEUTER SERVICES DOWN THE ROAD With the generous support of PetSmart Charities and its spay/neuter Blitz program, NHS provided low-cost spay/ neuter services to some 1,470 community pets via targeted campaigns in For more information about PetSmart Charities, visit: Thousands of unwanted births were prevented with the spaying of 425 pet cats prior to the Spring kitten season. More than 300 kittens and puppies over six months of age were spayed or neutered before they could become parents. 3 Message from Kevin Ryan, CEO Next stop for No-Kill Nevada quest: Carson City hen Nevada Humane Society was founded in W 1932, there wasn t an already-trodden path or an animal welfare instruction manual directing our efforts in the rough-and-tumble West (or at least in the swinging, exuberant Reno of the 30s). Yet, we prospered, grew, and evolved, maneuvering our way through the Northern Nevada landscape with a simple yet powerful mantra as our North Star: Protect and provide for animals in need. Decades later, we ve added innovate to save lives to our credo. Innovation is how NHS transformed Washoe County into a no-kill community and into the safest place to be a dog or cat in the nation innovation that works, that creates real change and attacks the root of the problem, in effect, guided evolution. NHS programming is brimming with examples of this lifesaving innovation, from targeted adoption programs including Angel Pets and Seniors-for-Seniors to initiatives like G.I. DOGS that simultaneously supports homeless dogs and wounded warriors. When there has been a need, NHS has found a way to meet that need in an impactful way. We never set out to design a new program we aim to solve a problem. We consult research. We look for the simplest and most effective avenues to craft change. Then we set goals. Subsequently, we blow those goals out of the water. We achieve more than we predicted, more than we imagined possible. This isn t bigheaded horn-tooting this is a fact. As our Director of Operations Denise Stevens often points out, NHS is at its best when times are the toughest, when we have no choice but to get it done. I am proud of NHS for infinite reasons, and a primary motivator for uprooting my life (and beagle) to join NHS is the fact that no task is too daunting nor no obstacle too large for this organization to tackle. It took mere months for NHS to become a no-kill shelter in 2007 I would wager that this was faster than any other organization that has undertaken this endeavor. This transition changed Northern Nevada and helped change the world. Now we set out to do it again. On October 1, NHS took over operations of Carson City Animal Services. We did this with one goal in mind to make Carson City the second municipality in Nevada to become a no-kill community. We will do it in a substandard building. We will do it in a community that has struggled in terms of animal management. Failure is not an option. Lives depend on our success and I promise you we will not fail. It s a new day in Carson City and it s a exciting day for NHS. For more information about this new endeavor, please see our cover story on page 6. The task ahead of us will be arduous. The destination is worth the labor. Carson City deserves this, Nevada deserves this. Our capital city will be a beacon for other communities to follow suit. 4 Our Biggest Little Wins A Celebration of Lives Transformed by Nevada Humane Society I m Scooter. I was just 4 months old when I came to Nevada Humane Society. A NHS foster care volunteer named Georgia took me home since I was too tiny for adoption. I have deformities to both of my back legs, which makes it a bit challenging to get around. The NHS veterinarians were concerned about my quality of life and considered amputation, but I showed them how well I could maneuver just the way I am. My style of mobility may not be pretty but it works! My foster mom found me cute enough to adopt. Even though I was high maintenance at first, I ve overcome my disability and scoot like crazy all over the house. Georgia says that I m a little sweetheart. I try! I m Abito. I was 11 years old when I came to NHS became my person had to give up her home. It took me a long time to find a new family I m not sure why as I m very handsome but when Jasmine and her son came by, my good looks and sociability won them over immediately. I m a big guy and make them feel protected in their home. I love hanging out with Jasmine s son, father and neighbors. And when she takes me with her on morning walks, I feel very proud and lucky. She says that I m really sweet and a joy to have. I m feeling the joy too big time! I m Kora. First impression of me? Gorgeous, you know it! I m also sassy, funloving, affectionate and charming plus I love people, cats and dogs! My challenge? Bladder health. I need to be on special diet food indefinitely. Regular vet visits help too! It s not as bad as it sounds it makes me unique! My new person, Francesca, says that I picked her, putting my paw on my face and melting her heart with my big blue eyes. In my new home, I m best friends with a Chihuahua and we play and wrestle together. Francesca says that I have been a blessing and made her life better in many ways. Can you tell I m blushing at the compliment? I m Bingo. I m a dapper older gentleman who knows the value of a cozy bed in a warm, sunny spot. Naps are my specialty I m a champion snoozer! And I absolutely love a good ear scratch. Unfortunately, my person had to give me up because of allergies. Fortunately, during my short residence at Nevada Humane Society, I found a wonderful new family who appreciates the virtues of a laid-back, mature I m 12 years old after all dog. What can I say? 5 Interventions That Save Lives Angel Pets A Safety Net for Special Needs Animals S chmo (pictured at right), a four-year-old Cairn Terrier, is a pint-size bundle of cuteness with a winning personality. Small dogs like Schmo are very popular at Nevada Humane Society and typically find a home within days, if not hours, of being available for adoption. But Schmo came with baggage. With a history of seizures and chronic ear infections, he requires medication and regular treatment for life extra costs that many potential adopters don t want or can t afford to assume. Lucky Schmo Fortunately, Schmo had been designated an Angel Pet. As part of this special program at NHS, his adoption fee is waived and lifetime veterinary services are offered at our clinic for cost. If an Angel Pet needs a special diet to stay healthy because of food allergies or other related conditions, they can receive free and low/cost pet food. Lucky Schmo found a loving home with a friendly young couple without children who are indulging their affections on their pint-size pet. He s an absolute joy, says new mom Mary, who enjoys having a lap dog in her home office. Our first small dog, he s both sweet and mischievous. We ve had to childproof the house! Our Angel Pets Adoption Program makes it possible for medically less-than-perfect pets to find perfect homes, says NHS CEO Kevin Ryan. These animals are often are overlooked because of their extra care and the associated expenses. Our Angel Pets benefit from extra-special care before and after adoption to ensure their quality of life. Angel Pets makes it possible for medically less-than-perfect pets to find perfect homes. A Happy Home for Kevin Handsome, 13-year-old Kevin (pictured at left) has Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), which weakens an animal s immune system and predisposes them to a variety of infections and diseases. But his easygoing charm captivated Mariam, even though she was looking for a younger cat. She had another FeLV feline so Kevin fits right into her household. I was prepared for some extra medical expenses so news about the Angel Pets program was a happy surprise, says Mariam. 6 Cover Story Nevada Humane Society Forges Lifesaving Partnership with Carson City hy has one Northern Nevada county successfully W sustained a lifesaving rate over 90% for six years while a neighboring county s live release rate barely tops 50%? As Nevada Humane Society transformed Washoe County into one of the country s safest metropolitan areas for homeless pets after committing to no-kill in 2006, residents and officials in Carson City took notice. And the officials came calling. In August of this year, City Manager Nick Marano announced a new public/private partnership between NHS and Carson City Animal Services (CCAS) designed to launch a new chapter in animal services in Nevada s capital city. Carson City, an independent city of almost 60,000 residents, lies 30 miles south of Reno and adjacent to Washoe County, the primary service area of NHS. CCAS is responsible for community pet adoptions as well as dog licensing, bite investigations, reporting lost and found animals and enforcement of animal ordinances. Though geographically close to Washoe County, Carson City is worlds away in its animal lifesaving efforts. NHS is committed to helping CCAS significantly boost its live release rate as well as streamline operations for more effective service delivery. We will demonstrate commitment to our area s homeless animals and our residents by becoming the second no-kill community in the state of Nevada. Under the new alliance effective as of October 1 NHS will oversee all facets of CCAS operations, including adoptions, sheltering, staffing and regulations services. This collaboration offers NHS a meaningful way to leverage over 80 years of experience and take Carson City to the next level in animal welfare, says NHS CEO Kevin Ryan. We have demonstrated the tangible outcome of the no-kill philosophy, saving nearly 70,000 lives since becoming no-kill. At the heart of the NHS plan to transition Carson City from a community with a 55% live release rate to a nokill community is the installation and instillation of NHS values and systems. By employing the same model used to forge a no-kill community in Washoe County, married with progressive, proactive customer-oriented animal services, Ryan is confident about building a structure that will quickly transform the Carson City community. 8 Staff Chat Meet Debra Kelly, NHS Director of Administrative Services hat was your path into the W field of animal welfare? I suppose my story is a lot like most. I was always feeding baby birds and trying to find homes for the stray cats in our neighborhood. My professional background is in retail sales and I didn t really think about working in animal welfare until I came to Nevada Humane Society as a volunteer dog walker. Then after 18 months as a volunteer, I was offered a position as a dog and cat Caregiver I ve been at NHS ever since. What are some of the jobs you ve held since joining NHS? After Caregiver, my next job was as an Adoption Counselor. When NHS moved into our current building in 2006, I was promoted to Junior Adoption Lead. I then joined the Interim Director in the administrative office. Eventually I was promoted into management as our Adoption Manager and was fortunate to be in that position when we committed to being a no-kill shelter. It was a very exciting time! We were setting adoption goals and blowing them out of the water more often than not. In 2008, I took over leadership of Administrative Services. How do you spend most of your time? My two largest areas of responsibility are personnel and financials, so my days are a busy blend of staff developments and spreadsheets. I am also charged with the challenging IT function and am the resident database guru. Tracking our 90+ employees and accounting for every cent is a full-time job. It can be rather harrowing but I love it! What are the qualities you look for when hiring for NHS? So many people who apply for jobs in animal welfare say they get along with animals better than people. At NHS we are looking for folks that love animals AND people. We strive to have exemplary customer service as well as the highest quality of pet care. We are lucky to live in a community brimming with such an extraordinarily compassionate population, and lucky to have the opportunity to hire people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and ages. It makes us a far stronger organization. What are the biggest misconceptions potential employees have about working in an animal shelter? People apply for positions at Nevada Humane Society with the idea that they will be loving on and playing with the animals all day. They don t realize how physical it is to keep our shelter looking as well as it does on a daily basis. I also think new employees are often shocked at the scope of NHS the number of dogs and cats, spay and neuters, adoptions, intake and everything else. It s a huge place programmatically and can be a little overwhelming. What are your hopes for the future for NHS? I hope that we will not only be able to sustain our lifesaving rate in Washoe County but continue to help people and their pets in our outlying counties. You regularly foster animals who come to the shelter and have special needs. Can you share a favorite story? I have several favorites but the one that I think of most often is a puppy who came into the old shelter right after I started working at NHS. This little girl had mange. She was very shy and didn t want to be touched as she had open wounds. She required baths every day with a special shampoo and when I first took her home, she didn t want to be bathed. It took some patience but soon she looked forward to her bath and being cuddled on my lap afterward. A very special young man in a wheelchair came in with his family looking for a dog. He was moving into his own apartment and needed a small dog who would sit in his lap and be easy to care for. We went into a visitation area and she jumped up on his lap and that was all it took. She became his constant companion, sitting in his lap everywhere he went. We see evidence of the strong human-animal bond like this every day at NHS it s a heartwarming perk of our jobs. If you were an animal, what animal would you be? I would give anything to be one of my pets. They are so spoiled! Never has a dog or cat had a more idyllic, carefree existence. Anyone who has ever met any of my furry family members can plainly see that they reside at the intersection of easy street and free-ride boulevard. Especially Poppy, (an eight-pound wispy-haired little guy) who not only runs the house but has his own wardrobe. A different outfit for any occasion. As NHS Director of Administration, Debbie has responsibility for the financial management, human resources management, and other administrative oversight for the organization. 9 Vet Check Q&A with Hillary McCulloh, DVM T he doctor is in! In every issue of NHS Society Pages, a member of the NHS clinic veterinary team will respond to your pet-related questions. See box below to find out how to submit your questions. Why does my Golden Retriever, who is 3, eat rocks? Shelley C. This is a relatively common issue, particularly in Labrador and Golden Retrievers. Like babies, most puppies will put things in their mouths to explore what they are, but typically grow out of this habit. Why dogs do this is not completely understood and reasons can vary from dog to dog, so there is no simple solution. I suggest keeping your dog away from landscaping, or when outside, keeping him on a leash so you can physically keep him away from the rocks. My groomer says dogs don t need their teeth brushed until they are 5. Is that true? Eli H. It is best to start brushing your dog s teeth at an early age. While some dogs (particularly larger breeds like Labrador Retrievers) may have little tartar at 5 years of age, other breeds such as Yorkies, Toy Poodles and Cavaliers can have large amounts of tartar as early as 6-8 months. Brushing must be done with a soft, dog-specific tooth brush and dog-specific toothpaste (the fluoride in human toothpaste can be toxic to dogs if swallowed in large amounts). Ideally their teeth should be brushed every day, but due to our busy lifestyles, I recommend aiming for at least 2-3 times per week. Dogs should also have their teeth professionally cleaned by a licensed veterinarian 1-2 times a year from the time they are 1-2 years of age. The earlier you start this regimen, the less likely your pet will have painful tooth problems and need costly extractions. I strongly recommend selecting a veterinarian that performs pre-anesthestic bloodwork,places an IV catheter, provides IV fluids, and anesthestic monitoring to ensure the safest possible anesthetic experience for your pet. Beware of the anesthesia-free dental cleanings as they are unable to provide thorough cleaning and evaluation of the teeth. Why do cats throw up after eating? Susan K. There are lots of reasons why cats may vomit after eating. While some are simple, such as eating too fast or a food allergy, vomiting can also be an indication of more serious problems including hyperthyroidism, diabetes and urinary obstruction especially if frequent. I recommend taking cats to their regular veterinarian for an exam, and blood work and diagnostic imaging (x-rays, ultrasound), if determined necessary. Any vomiting cat should be taken to their regular veterinarian for an exam and if deemed necessary, additional testing. NHS Shelter Veterinarian Dr. Hillary McCulloh and her dog, Eian. In our Nevada climate, is it necessary to treat my dogs for fleas/ticks and heartworms? Julie C. Reno s relatively dry climate decreases the number of parasites present, but does not completely eliminate them. There are still fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other parasites in our area that carry life-threatening diseases for our pets in both summer and winter. I recommend you contact your veterinarian to develop a year-round treatment strategy that suits your pet s lifestyle. And don t forget your indoor cats! It only takes one infected mosquito sneaking into your house to bite your cat and give him or her heartworm disease. Do you support raw diets for animals and why or why not? MC H. Though a popular fad, I do not support raw diets for any pet due to the high risk of serious illness from food that may not been properly processed, packaged, and/or stored prior to purchase. Contaminated raw diets can cause severe GI distress, including vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dehydration, and potentially even death. I do not, however, oppose COOKED and NUTRITIONALLY BALANCED homemade diets. If you are interested in developing a homemade diet for your pet, contact your regular veterinarian for advice on how to ensure it is safe and provides all the necessary nutrients.
