Check the ware over for blemishes and if present lightly sand with 100-grit rubber scrubber or sandpaper 2. Dust the piece off with paper towel. 3. Using the provided pattern, clay carbon and red pencil trace the design onto the ware. 4. Align the eaglee pattern over the contact paper. Proceed to carefully cut out the eagle, however omit the talons. 5. Remove the backing off of the contact paper. 6. Secure the cut out eagle over the traced eagle on thee canvas ware. 7. Damp sponge the ware to condition for decorating and removing dust.
3 8. SKY - Place a small amount of the following colors on the palette: Royal Purple, Light Blue and Dark Turquoise. To each of these colors add White and mix. Add more White to the Royal Purple making a soft Santa Fe Sunset color. 9. Fully load Fan Glaze with all three of the new mixes and some additional White. Working horizontally across the canvas, streak in the sky, blending the colors together. Try to stay off the Mountains. Note if color gets on the mountains wipe back with damp brush and a pinched sponge. Go over the sky a few times to create a softer look. 10. With a paper towel pat off excess color from the contact paper. 11. Remove the contact paper and make sure all residue is removed from the bisque. The pattern should still be seen. 12. Eagle is completed with the following EZ-Strokes: White, Sienna Brown, Smoke Grey, Medium Mahogany, Indiann Summer, French Brown, Sierra Yellow, Yellow Orange, Dark Brown and Cobalt Jet Black. Place these colors on the palette as needed. Thin with water if necessary. 13. For easier painting we have provided you with close up pictures off each area of the Eagle. 14. When completing a bird of any kind it is usually easierr to work from the tail upward to the head. However, in this case we will startt with the tail, then to the back wing. For the most part the #4 and #2 Round will be used, along with thee #6 Filbert and #10/0 Liner. The #0 Round can be used for the finer features like the beakk and the feet. 15. TAIL - Completing the tail. Use the close up as a guide. a. Use White, White and Smoke Grey mix and Smoke Grey. b. Paint the tail White. c. Begin to shade by tipping the #4 Round in White/Smoke Grey and working from the body out, begin to feather in shading. Note the two smaller feathers in the middle area of the tail. d. Go back over the tail feather tips with anotherr coat of White. e. Re-tip the Round with Smoke Grey and add more depth of color to the shadowed areas and under the thin ridge of white at the upper edge of tail. f. If desired detail the tail feathers with a thin broken outlining of Cobalt Jet Black. 16. Using all the browns begin to complete the eagle except for the head and talons. 17. BACK WING - To complete the back wing. a. Load #2 Round with Medium Mahogany andd tip with Indian Summer. Pull in the long flight feathers. b. Reload as needed and pull the feathers up into the shoulder of the wing. c. Pick up French Brown, tip with Dark Brown and shade the inner edgee of each feather. d. The shoulder feathers are competed with the Filbert loaded with Medium Mahogany and tipped with Indian Summer. Start by over lapping the flight feathers first and working upward to the top of shoulder. e. When these fine tighter strokes are pressed in, repeat with the French Brown and Dark Brown. Create a rounded appearance to each stroke. Allow to dry. f. Tip the #4 Round in Cobalt Jet Black and float in a small amount of shading along the line where the upper wing overlaps the back wing. Do not lift the previously applied color. g. Detail the feathers with Cobalt Jet Black andd #10/0 Liner FRONT WING - The front wing is lighter in tone and Sienna Brown is used more often. Again, refer to the photograph as a guide. a. Pull in the flight feathers with a mix of Siennaa Brown and drop or two of French Brown. Note some have pointed tips and others have rounded tips. Pull these in one by one all the way up to the first row of smaller feathers.
4 b. Go back and feather in shading from the tip inward with Medium Mahogany and Indiann Summer. This shading moves up thee feather two-thirds of way. c. Shade the tips with French Brown and Dark Brown. The Filbert works well for the rounded feathers. d. Add additional shading in French Brown to the feathers just under the unpainted smaller feathers. e. The inner feathers are much light than the rest of the Eagle. Note how the rounded tips of the feathers are left light and the upperr edge is drybrush out darker. Pull in the smaller feathers with a coat of Sienna Brown and bit of Medium Mahogany. Two coats will be needed. f. Add shading to the base of thesee lighter feathers with Medium Mahogany and Indiann Summer. A small amount of French Brown can be added to enhance the shading. There are three distinct rows of these feathers. g. There is a long light blending of color along the upper outer edge of wing. This areaa is complete with Sienna Brown and Medium Mahogany with the upper edge French Brown. Use a #2 Round. h. Darken the wing area as it connects to the body with strokes of French Brown and Dark Brown. i. Outline and detain the individual feathers. Bee sure to add the center rib down the larger feathers. 19. LEGS - Complete the legs next with the #2 Round. a. The legs are much darker in tone and are completed in a more stippling motion. Pick up Medium Mahogany and stipple in both legs. Create a feathered look. b. When dry go back over both legs with stippling of French and Dark Brown. The back leg should be stippled darker than the front leg. c. Shade and detail the legs with Cobalt Jet Black. 20. BODY - The body is completed next from the tail upward, using the same brushes and the same colors as the wings. a. Mix Medium Mahogany and Sienna Brown together and with feather like strokes press in with the #6 Filbert. This will be a basecoat. As you get closer to the head, use less pressure and right next to the head change brushes to the #2 Round. b. With the darker tones of Indian Summer, French Brown and Dark Brown begin to shade the feathers. The tip ends of the feathers are the darkest areas. Again, work from the bottom of bird toward the head. c. Outline and detail the feathers with Cobalt Jet Black and #10/0 Liner. 21. HEAD - To complete the head use the same colors used on the tail in step15. a. Block in the head with White. b. Shade the top of head with Smoke Grey and White, also shade under the eye. c. Shade the lower edge of head with the White/Smoke Grey Mix. d. Enhance the head with fine line detailing with Cobalt Jet Black and #10/0 Liner. 22. BEAK AND TALONS are completed with Yellow Orange, Sierra Yellow, Medium Mahogany and French Brown. Use the #0 Round and #10/0 Liner. a. Block in the talons and beak with Yellow Orange. When completing the talons work one section at a time and refer to the close upp Photo. Note to achieve great shading on the talons be aware of how the segments overlap one another. b. Beak is shaded with Sierra Yellow and Medium Mahogany and outlined with French Brown. Keep the lower section of the beak slightly darker.
5 c. To complete the talons keep the top of each segment with Sierra Yellow and hint of Medium Mahogany. The lower edge is moree of the Yellow Orange. d. Proceed to add shading to the talons segments that are overlapped by its neighboring talon. e. Detail with fine lines of French Brown with # 10/0 Liner. f. Add nails of Cobalt Jet Black. 23. EYE is Sierra Yellow Iris and a Cobalt Jet Black pupil. 24. MOUNTAI NS - Complete the mountains next with the White and Grey tones of the head and tail. Fully load the #6 Round with water, pat off excess water and tip with White/Smokee Grey mix and a hint Smoke Grey. Holding Round onn the flat streak in the mountains with the tip of the brush resting against the traced line. Wigglee the brush, the mountain tops are streaked in. Reload as need and sometimes pick up another shade of Grey, slightly darker or lighter. Be sure to add darker shades around the tail and the head. If color becomes too dark or too blotchy work back over with clean water and #6 Round. 25. Basecoat the entire branch with Sienna Brown and #6 Round. 26. BRANCH - Using the same brushwork as with the mountains begin to shade the wood with Medium Mahogany, Indian Summer and Roasted Chestnut, and French Brown. The darker browns are streaked in with the various shadess of brown. Try to create a bark like look with the darker tones to the under sides. The rougher the application, the branch will have a more realistic appearance. 27. With #10/0 Liner, detail the mountains and the branchh with Cobalt Jet Black. 28. Fire to shelf cone Damp sponge the ware to condition for Glazing and too remove fired dust. 30. Place Clear Satin into a paper cup and thin slightly with water. Mix with palettee knife. 31. With Glaze Fan apply three coats to the top surface of the canvas.. Allow to dry between coats. 32. With Glaze Fan apply three coats of Black Satin to the sides of canvas and the back. 33. Allow to dry. 34. Properly stilt and refire to shelf cone Remove stilt marks with Dremel Tool or Stilt Stone.
